The 12v is mostly used for recharging my iPhone/iPad but I use the GPS once a month or so. While using my GPS in DC the buildings never caused me to drop a signal so I haven't run into that yet. If you wanted for judging your speed you could figure your speed per gear/rpm if you were worried about dropping your GPS signal... or just put it on your tach, dash or underside of windscreen instead.
