I'm starting to think (about dirtbikes)
who here rides on dirt?
I found an insane deal on a 2000 TTR125. Would the 125 be too small? It would be just for putting around on some trails near the house and maybe some other trail riding. Not trying to break any records, just to have something cheap and fun to ride offroad. Bueno?

that's pretty tall to be on a 125. Have you tried sitting on the bike to see how it fits you? anything can be made to be a trail bike, but it takes some careful selection to have a great trail bike.

then buy it and have fun. They are supposed to be quite reliable bikes, but not power houses.
other bikes to consider are the Honda cfr150 or crf230. |

Maybe I need to go check. The guys there should let me take it for a spin in the parking lot. Oh, and I should ask my wife as well. lol
They also have a good deal on a 2009 KLR650.

wait, you're buying the bike brand new? i wouldn't. there are many used bikes now that the economy sucks. check CL in your area.

If it's in decent condition and runs good, 800 is a good price.
You may technically be a bit big for the bike, but if it's just to toy around on and have fun, you'll do fine. I have my old honda xr80r which is a pretty small bike, and I used to let my neighbor who is about 6' and weights a good 250 and he got around on it fine through the trails. And as far as toying around, small bikes like that wheely like nothing if you shift your weigh toward the back of the seat, makes it a fun toy

If I ever buy a dirt bike it will be a TW200 Road legal so you can ride to the off-road :P (a dual purpose more so..)

The dual sport has some real advantages. Like being able to ride to the trail. I was thinking of the tw200 for winter riding.

If I were to get an actual dual sport, I'd get something like the KLR650. Something that I could take on the trails, and also drive to them.
I talked to my wife, we think we are better off waiting until next year to purchase another bike. At least then I may actually be able to get a new/bigger bike. Here is the link if anyone is interested in that little TTR (in the houston area) http://wildwesthonda.com/used_bikes.htm

I would say if it runs good, then that bike is a steal. Thats very clean looking for an 800 dollar bike (at least for pricing in my area, I'm not sure about there)

The TTR 125 comes in two versions, a small wheel and a large wheel. The large wheel version is called a TTR 125-L.
If the one you are considering is not the L it will almost certainly be too small for you. |

Yeah, what he said. You will definitely want the L version ,if it's not I'd pass on it.
Also the 230 would be a much better choice as these are not highly tuned engines so the 125 will be lacking for an adult. Aside from that, for what they are there is nothing wrong with these bikes. It will probably be undersprung, but pretty much all bikes are from the factory. Also has budget suspension but you probably wont ever be going fast enough on this bike for it to matter too much. Some one mentioned the TW200 bit further up in the thread. Great bike, from what I've heard they will conquer almost anything..... just slowly. Dual sport wise, If you actually plan on doing any off roading I personally wouldn't recommend the new updated KLR650, older one isn't quite as bad. A better choice would be the DR650 for that category of bikes. Or if you don't plan on doing much highway, the DR-Z400. I have the DR650 and it's great on the road and off road as long as its nothing too serious. Although there are some people who do some very intense off roading with the DR650, but they are very good riders off road. |

Old honda xr250 are bulletproof trailbikes so long as oil and air filter were maintained . Look for a good condition one that hasn't had much owner turnover. Great balance of lower weight and predictable (mild), tractable power.

I got to ride an old Suzuki RM 250 today, first time ever on a dirt bike. Was a little intimidated by the almost 38 inch seat hight, but I could tip toe it. Thing was an 84 model I think, I took off down the road, and when I came to a stop sign I suddenly realized why you don't see to many bikes with drum brakes anymore. The thing had gobs of power though, and would lift the tire off the ground in the first 3 gears. If you find one of these in good shape, seems like a good bike to ride if your a tall dude.

i was blown away when i saw that honda was selling brand new left over CRF450 for $4,400, thats about $3,300 off. And its a popular, award winning bike. 2009 went fuel injection and maybe thats part of the left over reason. Now not a beginner bike, but if ridden carefully...
