Charity rides?
I just got invited on a charity ride for MS. The ride will be about two hours. Mostly cruisers. I think maybe one or two sport bikes.
Have any of you been on a charity run/ride? |

I avoid them like the plague.
Why would anyone want to ride a motorcycle slowly among large group of riders and suck in more CO2 than they should? Large number of slow riders overtaking the roads, not only more chance for accidents, but also give bad impressions to motorcycling community when other traffic cannot move at normal flow or in need to detour from normal route. If anyone want to donate to a cherity, why not just do so without attending any event without it needing personal time without risks. IMO, it's just another marketing gimmick to attrack people who can't ride properly on their own to get their novelty machines out on the road en mass so they don't feel out of place by themselves. Similar to stadium sports in America, most spectators are not even in physical conditions to participate in the particular sport. You fight 1-2 hour traffic to get to the stadium before and after the game, most sit on their a$$ and consume poor diet during the event.. If you want to support a good cause, just get out their and put you back into the work. |

I actually participated recently in a charity ride riding my little ninja. I found it to be surprisingly fun riding our little 250's in the midst of Harleys and Goldwings (even had a can am). Granted, the group was rather small so that might have increased the enjoyment. Also enjoyed all the looks I got si ce I was on the only spirtbike in the midst of the others. I think the best option would be to get one or two other ninjas in the ride to join you... that way if you guys don't like it, you can just drop out and still ride with a group since you're already out...

They're a lot of fun if you go in with the understanding that they'll probably be slow going and knowing that you'll be around a lot of other bikes. We usually do a couple of them a year and actually organize one forCamp Cocoon every year. Some of them are small 60-70 riders and some of them are big, 600-1000 riders, but they're all fun and the money goes to a good cause.
I've seen some people revving their engines and being loud, but never seen anyone doing downright dangerous/stupid stuff on the ones we go to. If you've never been to one, find a good sized, well organized Toy Run at Christmas or go on a Ride for Kids ride. They're always pretty sane and police escorted. |

There's a ride next Saturday in my neighborhood called "Ride for our Soldiers". I'm thinking about going. Its $25.00 a bike and ends with food and lunch for all riders. Its for a good cause and this would be my first time riding in such a large group. Might be fun, we'll see!

My dad has been riding his Harley for over 20 years. I've been riding on the back since I was about 3. Now I ride along side him.
Last month I went on a poker run with him and a group of cruisers. There were about 15-20 of us at the start but we split the group at the first stop because some people wanted to go get food. I spent most of the day riding with a touring bike, my dad on his 1994 Springer Softail a couple other cruisers, and a trike. All I have to say is that if you are ever in a group with a trike, GET IN FRONT OF IT. I was stuck behind him for about 30-40 miles. He almost had to stop in the turns since he couldn't lean. The first time I wan't expecting it and almost had to go off the road to avoid slamming into the back of him. After that my Dad and I got in front and rode ahead of the pack. We just went until the next turn off where we waited. When the group caught up we would take off again. I also went to a bike blessing earlier this year just after I got my bike. Rode with about 40-50 bikes. Mostly Harleys, but there were a few sport bikes in the group. When we got to red lights we would wait until it turned green. Then one of the touring bikes would turn on his flashers and ride out into the middle of the intersection on either side of the pack and stop traffic while we rode through. If the light turned back to red while we were passing through we would keep going until everybody was through. |
