PLM full exhaust opinion

PLM is selling a full ss exhaust with a carbon fiber can for $150 shipped. From what I've seen, with a jet kit you can get 29 bhp which is good but not as good as I've seen with Area P. Taking price into account, this still seems pretty attractive. Can anyone offer feedback on this exhaust? Quality, fit/finish, support, etc...? Thanks

If you search on "PLMFG" a bunch more hits should come up, most with similar thoughts on this site (but some dissenters).

I got one coming from a friend who upgraded to Area P, before he even got around to installing it. I was just going to do the dan-moto thing, but thought I'd try this instead--though now I will definitely have to shim the needles.

Thanks for responses even though it may be an old subject. Ultimately, Area P is the way to go but with all the other things on the "need to buy list", don't think that's in the cards. Sounds like also Tyga may be a good compromise.

Yeah, the racingorder.com guy who chose the TYGA over the PLFMG was VERY happy and had SUPER results.

How is that when it is the exact same design?

It's built in a different factory with inferior materials by less-skilled personnel with no care to their own company's reputation. If the differences don't matter to you, so be it, but by no means are they identical.

i bought one of these. yes the quality and workmanship of the exhaust is not that great, but you get what you pay for obviously. there are sharp edges and fake carbon fiber etc.

i dyno'd 30 hp w/ a FP stage 3 jet kit. i now have a AP full race 18" carbon fiber exhaust, because i wanted it to be quieter at idle and low speeds for the early morning commute out of my neighborhood. i have to say tho, that i like the sound of the PLMFG exhaust better when cruising around 8k rpm. the AP makes a slightly weird tone that hurts my ears at certain RPM ranges.

if you are on a budget or just cheap. get the PLMFG.

Got mine "used" but never installed. Gonna put it on along with 2 shims (and maybe remove snorkel) tomorrow night. Will report back.

Again, if this had cost more than danmoto, I probably would have gone with that--I may still...but figured I'd see how it ran and if I noticed any difference with it.

I have a REALLY dead rev-range from 7.5k or 8k rpm to 10krpm...this and the shimming may or may not help with that.

shimming will help in that range. That's where the needles are in charge

I just installed this exhaust today. Took about 1 hour since I needed to go to the hardware store to get a longer bolt and spacer to space the canister a little further from the swingarm otherwise the exhaust fits really well. The problem lies in the fact that the bike was laid down on this side and the hanger may have some sort of tweak to it but not sure as pot metal doesn't bend but it doesn't fit on the frame quite like the otherside. So I will make another hanger to help push it out further and also add a bracket/hanger down on the midpipe where the factory has one.

My biggest complaint is that it doesn't have a bracket welded to the midpipe to add a more rigid install. Since the canister is only connected with a weak aluminum wrap around strap, I believe there is too much tension on the head where the header bolts-on.

I am going to make one to add some strength as well as push the canister outward some more. I am road racing this so there will be a lot of flex and movement within the bike and I don't need anything causing some sort of problem going into a deep corner at speed.

I knew I might run into some issues and complaints but for the price of admission, an awesome deal! I will post up another 250 Ninja mod post for everyone to enjoy or point fingers at....

@icbm: "Took about 1 hour since I needed to go to the hardware store to get a longer bolt and spacer to space the canister a little further from the swingarm..."

CAN you tell me exactly what you bought--I need to do the exact same thing...I used some washers as spacers to move the PLFMG can out a bit, THEN I slid it up as much as I could--but your solution is MUCH better. I just need to know what to buy as I'm NOT mechanically inclined. (though with the help of my friend, we got the needles shimmed, exhaust on, and i moved the rear suspension from 1 to 5, in less than 6 hours.)

Did you basically just use an aluminum tube to fit between the can and the tubing coming from the front, as an extension? If so, what's the diameter and length? And did you use two of the little brackets to mount (squeeze) the spacer at both ends? I too thought it was a BIT odd that it didn't have a middle bracket holder, BUT it is a bit lighter...let me know if you come up with an easy solution for that.

Mine's still barely rubbing on my brake line bracket thingy.
I have a LOWES and a HOME DEPOT right up the street...but I have NO IDEA what or where to look for what I need.

I made a FULL report under "shim-shimminy" in the Tech Section.
