Cool Motorcycle Reflectors

What are your thoughts on the orange (or yellow?) and red reflectors on motorbikes? I think they are pretty ugly, but probably safe at night. I see lots of riders taking them off, and others leaving them.

What do you prefer?

Do you think if you took them off and put reflective tape on the wheels you would be just as or more visible compared to reflectors?

Also, does anyone know the laws regarding reflectors on motorcycles in NY state? I can't seem to find much. Thanks a bunch.

I have a weird thing about keeping everything stock as far as looks go on cars and bikes. So since that's how my bike came I think that's how I'll keep it. I don't know how I started thinking that way but I've always been like that. I don't even like changing the rims on cars...I know some look amazingly better when they've been modified but I never do it myself...yeah I'm weird

Nothing wrong with that. Do you like having your bike modified if a experienced technician does it?

I don't know the laws in NY. I also prefer having tape. The orange and red reflectors look ugly.

Yea I'm all about performance or suspension mods...I just don't like modifying the outside of things... My old Mach 1 looked completely stock but it had just about every bolt on modification I could get under the hood and inside

I like performance mods too. But it's also nice changing the look of the outside. Making a bike your own is fun.

Call a local bike shop n ask. I know you have to wear some red reflector aimed rearward in NY state (I was pulled over for not having any), but I'm not sure on the side reflectors.

So one on the tail? How would you do something like that if you have a fender eliminator? Also, it would probably look ugly but what if you have red tape reflectors on your rear tire?

You can get two small round red ones with threaded studs on the back, they go to your tag holes. You can hold the tag on with them or put them into the two empty hols on your tag.

I wanted to keep something there as a reflector so I replaced the big ugly ones with smaller not so ugly ones. They are actually reflecting license plate bolts that happen to screw in perfectly. They stick out a bit because the stud is longer than the original, but I like them better than the stock ones. They're about 3/4" in diameter.

Still not nice in my opinion. I just want to know if I will get pulled over if I somehow put a red reflector on the rear of my bike and reflective white tape on cycle wheels.

The reflectors are there as part of the FMVSS. You need to check your state law to see if it is specifically illegal to mod that. If there is no law then you're good, since the FMVSS are "standards" and as written mostly apply to manufacturers, and is not a "law" by definition really.

So I found this on www.DMV.org

Quote:
New York state requires a Class B reflector on the rear of a motorcycle. What does a Class B reflector consist of?
Additional Details
New York Motor Vehicle Inspection Regulations (CR-79) states:

Inspect for:
1. Check tail, number plate, stop and turn
signal lights, REFLECTORS.

Reject if:
1. .....Does not have at least one Class B
red reflector on rear (may be part of light
lens).
