Saw all 4 colors on a dealership floor for the first time...
I took our ninjette in for its 7500 mile service today, and was surprised to see examples of all four 2009 color schemes (Green SE, Red, Blue, Black) sitting there on the sales floor. Sales dude said that things were pretty slow lately, and even the 250's were staying in stock. I didn't ask for the pricing on them, as I'm clearly not a viable buyer to him and wouldn't be likely to get a true bottom-line price by just asking him, so perhaps they are pricing them too high. Or perhaps demand is starting to go down, or perhaps both...

I had to put a deposit on mine, as they only had 2 left a few weeks ago, but this was from a smaller dealer that I can trust. One of the larger ones have tons in stock, but it was worth it, they didn't even try to upsell me on any extended warranty, protection plan, prepaid first service, and crate fees etc were laid out up front. 4416 OTD. (good for this area)

How much did your 7500mi service run you? Dealer I purchased mine from only had the black monster energy edition in stock. They were able to get one delivered from a warehouse they had the same day though. There was no down talking the price.

They're definitely more available this year than last year.
I figure: 1. Gas prices are half what they were last August 2. Kawasaki ramped up production last year when sales were so high 3. People are scared to make non-essential purchases The economy is going to get better. Fuel prices are going to go up when it does. Ninja 250s are going to start flying off the shelves when that happens. You might be able to sell your used model for more than you paid for it new. |

I dropped the bike off, so I do have to get back there to pick it up at some point. I'll try and remember to bring a camera with me...
Service is quoted at 4 hours labor plus parts. Parts won't be much, so multiply 4 hours times the going labor rate in your area, and it'll be in that ballpark. Here it's $90 - $95/hr.

No call from them today. Which is OK, as I didn't have an easy way to get there and back during their business hours (and Annie took the car with the trailer hitch this morning). Hope to pick it up tomorrow or Friday.

Alright you picture weenies, here they are...
2 of them were on display outside: The rest of 'em: 7500 mile service was $440 all-in. Included new front brake pads, which leads me to a story. I'm a complete dumbass. I knew this service was coming up, and I had checked a short while back and saw that my brake pads were running quite low. I figured I'd made it 7000 miles, what's another few hundred miles; what are the chances of them completely running out before the service. Well, near the end of last Sunday's ride, I felt metal to metal contact when I applied the front brakes . So I checked again, and realized that there was zero material left; I had the backing plates right up against the rotor. Brilliant, I know. So I rode home on Sunday after the ride without touching the front brakes at all; using rear only and giving myself alot of space. Was a bit of a mental exercise, as I rarely use the rear brake for much at all. Made it home safe and sound, and made it to the dealership a few days later as well. I was concerned that I had torched the rotor or damaged the caliper in some way, but it seems that I did catch it in time before doing any real damage. Rotor is fine, caliper is fine, and with new pads on now everything feels great. Did a stoppie in front of the house while checking 'em, and was successful. So don't be like me kids, I'm a dumbass. BTW, the brake lever feels spot-on now; it's amazing what new pads and a good brake bleeding can do for a bike. The 7500 mile service has a valve inspection in there, and it's the first inspection for the new-gens (the pre-gens had one called for at 600 miles). The good news, I guess, is that every single valve was still well within spec and required zero new shims. Good news because it means Kawi designed 'em correctly, bad news because that's a lot of paid labor hours to check something and effectively change nothing. The tech mentioned they may need a peek at the 12k service, but more than likely I'll wait until the 15k as specified in the manual.

Fixed.
I think it's one of those "side-by-sides" that have been released in the past year or two. They are sort of like super quads with a roll cage, that seat two people.

A couple months ago when I was in there, there were none. ::shrug:: I guess production is catching up to demand. |

Good to hear your valve check went well.
I'm at about 8400 and haven't done mine yet but I think I'm going to venture and do it myself sometime in the near future. Especially since it's not my own means of transportation nor only bike anymore. So I can take my time. |

I'm quite surprise to see Alex mention the brake pad wears out at 7500 miles. It's probably my inexperience with bikes, but is that's the usual distance it needs to travel before the pads are worn out?
I know cars could last much longer and also depends on how you brake. |

Depends on how you're using them. I killed my front pad at around 5-6k but I also had a number of trackdays in there...
The good thing is that when the front gets low, you can just swap it with the rear since they're the same pad. At least that's what I did. |

That's a good tip, Kuro! Now that you mention it I think you probably mentioned it before here but it completely slipped my mind. I would have had to get new pads anyway though, there wasn't any pad left on my pad.
Our bikes will use up pads a little faster than bikes with dual front disks; we're burning off that much more energy onto a single rotor and single set of pads. But we're only replacing one set of pads when they go, so cost-wise it's probably a wash. But this is by far the least amount of miles I've gone on a bike before wiping out pads, though.

Hmm so what do you think about just skipping the 400 + dollars on the 7500 mile inspection, since you're valves were all good. I am at 7600 and I was planning on paying for the maintenence, but if it's not needed... then why waste money?
what do you think about just waiting until the 12k service?

Yup.
Some other people's bikes needed every single valve to be adjusted. You can't really know until you get in there and see. Might be fine to delay it to a later service, or it might not be; depends on the particular bike, how it's ridden, and how it's maintained. Hypothetically, if you go to 12k and develop an engine problem that can in any way be traced back to valve issues, it may be a challenge getting Kawi to honor the warranty if you've never had the valves looked at as recommended.

I'm trying to figure out the fair cost for the 7,500 service so I can demand a more appropriate price. San Diego dealers all quote me $320-$500 while East Coast dealers quote $108 plus parts-$150 max.

EBC, semi-metallic. They feel fine, though like all EBC pads there's a little more drag when you spin the wheel on a stand. I'll follow the wear a little more closely this time to see how well these hold up.
