There already exists a mechanism to ensure increasing quality and affordability in motorcycle gear. It's called ... the free market.

There is always a tradeoff between cost and protection. No test can protect against everything (e.g., striking a immobile object like a tree, rock, or semi).

If Fish is suggesting that every rider (or some class of riders) be required (that means law, government, and enforcement) to wear a certain standard set of gear, then I suggest he move to New York and limit himself to finding new ways to regulate carbonated beverages.

Yep, they have to hold up for 4.2 seconds or something to meet the certification. I know my draykos held up great on my lowside, i still wear the same pair since they barely got any marks at 40mph

Private industry can create its own rating methods ... but the public shouldnt be required to have safety gear.

How you live / risk your life is your own choice.

But I like standardization of scale on wear and and abrasion resistance.

a standardized system of quality of all gear would be nice

something along the line of the tire wear and speed ratings would be helpful and manufacturers could you is as an advertizing point.

if people want to wear a skull cap helmet more power to them.

Maybe the government should regulate your posts. That way you can't post without actually having a clue of what all of the government regulations actually lead to.

I couldn't answer that question, because you haven't mentioned to what standard the test(s) would be.

But in general, I've seen some really shoddy looking products out on the market...which tend to cost less. Even with helmets that are Snell rated or DOT certified there is a noticeable difference in quality from a low end cheapie to a higher end one

Ultimately, I believe the consumer should educate themselves and shop around for the best that they can afford
