Late Braking: Two Different Motorcycle Crash Studies Moving Ahead

MSF split from FHWA government study, now funding "naturalistic" motorcycle riding study insteadBack in 2009, the federal government finally gave the go-ahead to appropriate funds for the creation and implementation of a new motorcycle crash causation study along the lines of the famous Hurt Report of 1981. An alarming rise in motorcycle deaths in the past few years had put motorcycle riding under increasing scrutiny by Congress, and luckily in response (instead of calling for increased restrictions), a total of $2.8 million was handed over to Oklahoma State University's Oklahoma Transportation Center for conducting the study - with the caveat that the center seek out matching funds from the motorcycle industry in order to have sufficient funding for the study's original goal of 1200 case studies as recommended by the NTSB (National Traffic Safety Board).
