Interchangeable Transmission Parts

No. I didn't use the search function to check if this has already been answered. Yes. That makes me somewhat of a douche if it has... sorry.

My transmission is busted. The shifter wont budge from a somewhat upwards position. This happened when I went to downshift so I'm not sure why it's up... The rear didn't lock-up it just felt completely disconnected of power. The wheels rolls freely as in neutral, the bike (at the time of whatever happened) revved all the way to redline but none of the power was connected to the wheel. Now I can't start the bike because it thinks it's in gear but I can't get it in neutral as it wont shift.

Something is wrong with my transmission but I have yet to get the clutch basket off to check. Though I know nothing of transmissions so even once I'm staring at it I don't think that would help.

2 questions.

1) Are pre-gen and new-gen transmissions the same or similar? I have a friend with pre-gen parts. If I can see what's wrong can I use his to fix mine?

2) Any ideas what's wrong or what to look for? @alex.s suggested there's a spring thingy right behind the clutch basket; that's definitely not it.

interesting, what does your clutch lever feel like? Does it feel like it is operating the clutch? is there tension on the cable?

don't know what your case might be but I managed to accomplish the impossible !!!
I broke the shifter cam drum in two while shifting from 3rd to 4th...
don't know why, don't know how... forks were good as new, same with gear sprockets... blew tiny bits around before I made an engine turn off and my engine got busted after 35000km of really hard riding... maybe it was a shifter fail to shift or sth... hope it is sth easy to fix in your case...let us know of your results...

clutch was working even after the...explosion...
by the way if what you need does not fit from pre-gen maybe you could use some 300 parts...

well Alex...it is insane !!! I would also think it is a manufacturing defect BUT 1) my engine was being pushed to the limits all the time in and out of track, I am a "burner" (as my middle name is around here...) and I had it revving to 15k+ on the speedo (have ecu with extra revs) and 2) doing 39,5hp on the dyno and with temperatures exceeding 100 F half year long, no matter what motul or other synthetic oil I used, it got like a frying pan down in the casings... I must say that engine took a lot of abuse, more than I could have expected but I thought some valve floating or a rod braking or a piston flying off, not the shift drum to go down first !!
Anyway, I have a lot of photoshooting to do, expecting my 300 transplant due here today ot Monday and I'm gonna make a Naomi Campbell out of it...hahahaha, so will also take a few of my 250 parts too... however I am still having trouble uploading them... should I try the "photobucket" thing ??

What gear were you in when you were downshifting? I wonder if the shifter pawl is engaging the shifter cam properly.

Nope. One speed bump after the other. Still trying to get clutch basket off to look inside. Air compressor is broken so I can't impact drive the nut off.

Well got my air compressor all hooked up and working. Connected the impact wrench, put it on the clutch basket nut.... Nothing. Cheap Harbor Freight impact wrench probably doesn't have the balls to get it off. Either way - screw you then.

Found a good deal on a used 2k mile motor instead. Engine swap here I come! I'll dig in to this one when I get a chance later on. It's still a strong one.

Make sure you are using 1/2 in hose rather than 3/8 or 1/4. Mine has no balls with the 3/8 hose but has much more power with the 1/2in hose.
