Clean and lube chain Help!

I've noticed we do not have a DIY on how to clean and grease the chain. I remember seeing a video last year but can't find anything anymore.

Looking at Noche's 600 mile schedule it mentions that we should use " only kerosene or diesel oil for cleaning o-ring drive chain". Well i guess this mean it's not recommended to use WD-40 then so i figure i can use the Rotella T6 right? This is getting so confusing for such a simple maintenance.

Would someone please clarify things for me before i lose my mind and maybe together we can make a DIY for others. I am willing to take pics when i do this hopefully today so i can ride in 70F temps tomorrow up north of the border

I used kerosene with a toothbrush and a pan below, (you wouldn't want kerosene to drip on the driveway) I lift my rear end and scrub the chain, link by link, it goes pretty fast, kerosene liquefies the grease on the chain like if it was a simple task.

I use kerosene and a toothbrush to clean the chain. If you don't have any kerosene, you can pick up a small bottle from camping section at Walmart.

For lubing the chain, I use Dupont's Teflon Multi-purpose Lubrication. It is a wax for protecting your O-ring chain, and comes highly recommended by other bike forums. You can pick up a can for under $5 from Lowes.

Sure, chain cleaner is probably the safest thing to use anyways... I've never used anything other that kerosene though, since it works so well, and it's so cheap...

Same here, I also use kerosene and a toothbrush to clean chains, I put the bike on a stand and scrub with a pan below to catch the nasties. Once the chain is clean and dry I use Maxima Chain Wax...

Darryl, when you apply the maxima chain Wax (gold/black can), do you SOAK the hell outta the chain with the lube?

Do you wait 15 mins, then go back and rotate and wipe excess off, or just let it soak in for 15mins then go ride?

Either way, what is your guys exp, with the maxima chain wax FLINGING off?

How much or lil does it?

What amount do you lube your chain with?

Soaked as you spray on, or just alil bit as you spray it on?

I put it on after riding, slowly rotate wheel and coat chain with it. It sets well and doesn't fling much. No need to wipe off.

The Dupont Teflon spray is much cleaner. Nothing, like sand or dirt sticks to it, there is no fling off on the bike or dripping on the driveway, it's easy, cheap, and works very well. and minimizes cleaning of the chain in between spray-on applications.

I love this stuff. I used to use Maxima Chain Wax but this is clean and seems to lube better.

thanks guys.ive been looking for a new/cleaner lube to try.im doing my chain maint right now.usually I used a degreaser then wurth hhs 2000 Which I still think is fantastic stuff.but this time around I decided to try something different. I used black magic foam tire cleaner (which I just bought for the first time) as the degreaser then rinsed thoroughly and wow. I'm gonna grab some dupont tom.

I use WD-40 sprayed on a cloth at the moment. I need to get a toothbrush. I won't be doing kerosene being that the bike is parked in a forest. I live on five acres so I would prefer it stay five acres. No flash fires wanted.

As far as the chain lubricant, I use Royal Purple Max-Chain. I love everything Royal Purple and have had nothing but greatness out of their products.

I do now!

Well, we've been getting a lot of rain here so I think the trees are safe, LOL!

Plus, I am buying a shed tomorrow and the bikes will be in there by next weekend. Storage and workspace all in one. YES!
