Be safe

Now I'm not a person that really says "do this" or "do that".

One thing we motorcyclists and even regular cyclists support is safety. We like to be trained so we are the best we can be on two wheels (ok most of us do).

We always want to make sure that we wear the gear required to keep our body as protected as possible. We want others to be educated about us on the roads, to be looking out for us and to respect that we are as much as a vehicle as they are.

Now one thing that has freaked me out in the past was "what if I get in an accident that is bad enough to where I am unable to talk". I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row where people can respond even if they can't get into my cell phone or find my ID.

So I picked up one of these that I wear every time I head out on two wheels.

http://www.roadid.com

You can customize it to read whatever you want. It is attached via velcro so it easy to put on. I suggest some of you to do the same, especially if you have any allergies the EMT crew should know about.

For $20 (plus s/h), I don't see why anyone wouldn't get this.

I'm starting to think you spend way too much time surfing the internet Alex

By the way this is a great and inexpensive idea.

i guess i always figured they'd find my drivers licence if the worst were to happen... but it does make sense to wear my road id when i'm out on the bike... it's got my mom and my brother's numbers both right there and that i have a heart murmur and i'm an organ donor...

thanks 4 the reminder. i'm going to use it more often

Many people get me and Alex mixed up. I'll forgive you. lol

Well if you open up any cycling magazine and you see an ad for it. Watch the Tour De France, there is probably an ad for it during the program. I researched it, then realized that would be a great idea since most cell phones are password protected. So I wear it all the time now when I'm not in my car.

I have an emergency contact info pouch on my helmets.

http://wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/2...ories%2Fdes%2F

Didn't get it from that site as I bought them from a motorcycle friend who got a bunch for our breakfast club. Never had a problem with it coming off.

I wear a set of dog tags with ICE info on them when I ride... Actually, I wear them all the time really. That way I don't forget them when I do go out.

Nice, cheap, low key and effective. I figure that this way I'm at least one up on murphy's laws. If I didn't have some kind of ICE info on me I'd definitely get into an accident.

Mark, I have been wearing a Road ID for four years. I put it on every morning just like my watch---so, in effect, it is worn even if I use the cage. I do have a suggestion to anyone thinking of buying a Road ID or similar product---PLEASE list your Blood Type, if you know it. Those of us who work in the ER, see that information as a Godsent. If you are hurt and bleeding rather profusely, the EMT can call in the blood type and the ER people would have it there on arrival. Then there is always O-, which works with everybody, but is not always available. Anyway, it is a good piece of information to include. Also, when you list your birth date, for security reasons, list it as follows: Birth Year: 1941. The date is irrelevant---age is not. Unless you get the Road ID with the computer thing, you don't need to be wordy. List the allergy that you have that can kill you. (example: Peanuts) Under Medical Condition, list the most important. (for example: Diabetic or Hypertensive) We don't need a whole medical history--just a snippet of the important stuff. Everybody should wear a Road ID--whether they ride or not.

I would have included my blood type if I knew it. Maybe on my next checkup and can have them pull some to find out my blood type.

Unless you have an allergy or medical condition, I never understood the point of these things. It's not like they're going to hold off taking me to the ER until they know my name, address, emergency contact info and insurance card.

It is for your peace of mind knowing that they have the contact information for the people who do care about what happens to you. Like Alex said, knowing blood type is crucial in order to get the right blood back into you fast.

I know that if I can't speak, they have the information required for my allergies, and the phone numbers for people to contact. I listed my wife and my mom. Those are two people I know would want to know if something happened to me.

Mark, The most important thing is speed. Time is your biggest enemy. On a club ride last year, one of the guys crashed on a perfectly straight road with no apparant mechanical issue. He was diabetic according to his Road ID. His breath smelled like Acetone, which meant that he needed sugar quickly. A Power Bar revived him. His wife was called and she picked him and bike up and called his MD for direction. We did everything right and he continues to enjoy riding with us.

good stuff, i personally wouldn't wear it unless i'm on the bike. I always carry a purse with me, so its obvious that my ID would be in there with the details. But on a bike, you can't carry a purse.

I like the idea of knowing the blood type... i have a new task on my to do list.

I always thought the first thing to do with a diabetic is give sugar. When it doubt, give them sugar was what a medic told me. Then again, I'm no medic and I could be wrong! lol

Still, I think it is an excellent source of information.

I figured I'd get DNR tattoo'd across my check in 3" tall letters, and maybe 2" red circles with a slash tattoo'd at all the EKG attachment points. I hate those things, the glue takes forever to wear off. Next time I'm taking acetone to them, maybe that'll get it off.

Mark, You are spot on. Sugar, is it. A Power Bar has lots of sugar---especially the Pria bars.
