30 minute modification

feel free to chime in on this one, just in case i did something wrong
yesterday i decided to do a little modification to the bike, to help it breath better.
i first took the mufflers off (and then ran it down the road to see how loud it was) (yes it's pretty loud)
then i modified the mufflers a little.....at first i wanted to take them apart so i drilled out the 4 rivits on the tip of the pipe .. but it wouldnt separate...so i drilled out the middle with a long drill. then where the 4 rivits were, i opened the holes up a bit. bolted the pipes back on and started her up....nice deep throaty sound!! sweet.

the second thing i did was hack the airbox ( i didnt like the 2 little holes for air to pass through) so out came the saws-all and hack-o -change-o...the air box is fixed.
all this took less than 30 min. would have been quicker if i didnt pull the pipes off. (but then i would have been able to get the shavings out either)
was going to post some pics, but i can't get on photbucket for some reason

Have you made any jetting changes? Both of the mods you've done have made the bike run leaner.

You definitely won't be running rich, you're running lean (i.e. - possible concern for parts at high revs high loads).

Changing the airflow so drastically, you should immediately notice some performance changes. Was there a real reason to wanting to make it "breathe" better? Did you not like the performance originally?

If you get the chance, buy some hose, slit it up one side, and run it up along the edges of the holes you cut in your airbox lid. Either that, or just file it down really smooth. No need to risk having plastic shavings sucked into your engine.

here's what I mean with the tubing stuff. check out this video at about 2:05 and he is lining the edge of the holes he cut in his airbox with slit hose:

*edit*
you're going to be lean in at least the idle circuits and the mid range. You might also have to go up a size in the jets to get the top end at the right mixture. Talk to @Timon about how his jetting needs changed when he did basically the same intake modifications you did in this thread:

I was thinking the same as above. Plus I like how he is still clueless on rich or lean conditions, yet he does something that you should have at least a little knowledge in.

DUDE, REJET!!!!! you will REQUIRE bigger main jets. also need to lift the needle or get a new needle. The bikes come lean stock anyways.

@jasle, you're completely right.

I did this over thanksgiving, only my intake holes are A LOT cleaner (ocd about that), and I have slip-ons instead of hacking up my stock cans. The needles for sure had to be raised, and the oem 105 mains were lacking. I have 108's I'll be testing once I can ride.

raising needles only effects mid-throttle fuel ratio. for WOT, the only thing that matters is main jet size, float level and kinda the pilot system. needle height doesn't matter once you get to WOT

I know alex. Like I said, the mains were lacking because it wasn't pulling hard enough at WOT, but with the needles raised with another washer, the mid-range was perfect.

I've never touched the floats because I've never had issue with low rpm wot bogging.
