Alex's silly pet peeve of no importance... :-)

Hi all!

Wanted to post up about something I'm seeing on this board from time to time. People tend to use these two buttons interchangeably:

and

when they really do have a different purpose. If you are responding to the person directly above you on the page, and there's no chance that anyone reading the page isn't going to know who you're responding to, there's no need to quote their entire post in your own post right below. Use the Post Reply button. Especially if there are pictures in his/her post. If you're only responding to a small portion of their post and you feel it would be easier for folks to know that, then certainly use the quote feature, but cut the rest of their post out of the quote tags so the small portion you're replying to is apparent.

If you're responding to multiple questions from multiple posts, absolutely leave some quotes in there so people can follow your train of thought, and even consider using the "multi-quote" feature, by pressing these buttons: before you hit reply.

Thanks!
-Alex (your webmaster and forum etiquette geek )

Alex,

For the most part, I agree with you. There are times, though, I quote the person right above me so even if they go back and edit their original post later, I have a snapshot of their original post in my reply. I don't do that often, but sometimes, it's needed... and comes in handy.

If I have a fear that the prior poster is going to change their post in some way, I won't waste my time replying to them. This isn't verbal combat, it's an enthusiast forum. If our goal by quoting them is to somehow make sure people stick to what they are saying and not let them edit their words, it might make sense to take a step back to see what our intention in posting really is.

Quoting everyone on the off-chance that they might change their post is in some respects letting them know you don't trust them to keep their post the same if they don't like your followup.

Well, I've seen posts edited completely from the original content after a few reply posts and everyone after that is thinking, "WTF were the first few posters talking about?".

It's not about verbal sparring... more like cheap insurance.

Another reason I do it is that in the time it takes me to respond to a post, there may be two or three others that have responded since I started my reply. Yes, I type that slow.

You can get the same insurance by copying posts offline if it's that much of a bother. Using the quote button for every reply isn't the right answer. IMO, it's more of a constant annoyance compared to the every once in awhile someone changes their post and people wonder WTF...

Left unchecked, every conversation turns into the analogue of this:

: the sky is blue

: is the sky blue?

: Did you ask is the sky blue?

: is the sky blue?

: Did you ask is the sky blue?

: yes the sky is blue

: did you ask is the sky blue

: is the sky blue:

: +1 the sky is blue

: +1 the sky is blue

: Did you ask is the sky blue?

: @**(()#()*()#@()@ yes, the &**(&#**(#$ sky is blue!

And a thread with x amount of content has 3x of filler with quotes that do nothing but pad the screen.

Everyone here on ninjette.org has the courtesy of being able to edit their posts with no edited by tag for 60 minutes after the original post. After 1 hour, they can edit it for up to 60 days afterwards, but it will have that "edited by" tag at the bottom of their post. If anyone really does need to have a post moved or edited past that point, they can certainly PM me and if there's a reasonable explanation I'd be happy to accommodate them.

LOL... perhaps you need to go back and edit your title to read...

"Alex's silly pet peeve of great importance... :-) "

I think if you feel this strongly, get rid of the quote button or at least have a check list pop up when someone presses the quote button.

Nah, it's not that big a deal. People can quote whatever they want, and it's certainly a handy feature. All I ask is that they think for a moment if they are wavering between the "post reply" and "quote" button when adding a new post, and don't default to the quote button if they don't feel it's needed. If they do, that's why it's there.

When we spoke about the multi-quote feature awhile back, I was at first hesitant, but it turns out that the people who do use it are getting great use out of it, and it has proven itself useful without confusing the rest of the board.

you know what feature I always loved? The quick reply! That one gets a lot of use on other forums I visit because there isn't the lag time of another screen loading before I can get my reply typed, and when it posts it, I only have to hit back once to get back to my unread posts page instead of hitting it two times....

Ask and ye shall receive. :-) This message was posted using the quick reply feature. I had it disabled to keep things simple, but I'll enable it for awhile if people get good use out of it...

Alex, I am a total baloonfoot on computers. I do manage to muddle along. Do plan of taking a course this winter to become more literate and be able to post pictures. I guess you will all see some small progress on my part. I`ll try not to be an embarassment to the forum.

Alex C... did I miss it, or is there a step by step DIY on how to post pictures here? That would be a great help to those that would like to share pics, but don't know how.

Hi Kelly -

There's a sticky thread at the top of the Pictures forum with some instructions ----> right here

There's also some similar info in the FAQ --> right here

But I think the stock FAQ may be a little unclear, so I tried to make the post a little more usable.

Zartan -

Either picture method (attaching as a file or linking an external image via img tags) is completely A-OK by me, I truly have zero preference for which people use; it's really up to them. Our bandwidth is fine, and our disk space is fine, and will remain fine for the foreseeable future (and foreseeable for quite aways! ) Size of the pic above is just fine as well, don't worry about it at all. Personally, I choose to attach images as files if I want only ninjette.org members to see them. But if it's an image that I want the whole world to see (including search engines, bots, etc.), then I link to it with img tags as it is stored elsewhere. Personal pics such as the "what do you look like" thread have my pics as attachments, for example, as the attachments can't be viewed by people who haven't taken the time to register.

I really like the different methods of posting pics. I dont have an account on any image hosting site so I always just upload from the 'manage attachments' screen. I think it just saves the hassle of uploading to another site.

Alex, do each of us have a personal picture album here?

Yup, pull down the quick links menu and there's an option to get to your own albums. Once there press the "add album" link, and you can create any number of albums and put a pile of pictures in each. Add whatever you like, and if you do find yourself bumping up against limits, PM me and I'll likely be able to raise them to whatever you need.

Zartan, Love that subtile little black accent. That is really sharp. Am still looking for a digital camera--hopefully one that will take my 35mm Pentax lenses.
