Bye-Bye 250

Well... I got rid of the 250 about a month ago, and today I picked up a different bike.

I went with a 2009 Yamaha FZ6, I only have about two hours on it but I love it so far. This is my first 600 and damn am I glad that I went with the 250 for a couple of years before hand. The FZ6 would not make a good newbie bike.

Nice FZ6! I like the blacked out version you got. Looks so much nicer than the silver version I had. I am a little jealous - wish mine would have looked as stealthy. Sweet!

I had a 04 or 05 can't remember which it was. Mine was the silver and black version with silver frame and engine cases. I crashed the hell out of that one!

Be careful on it. It has plenty of get up and go that's for sure.

I'm really enjoying the blacked out version, I wasn't the biggest fan of the silver ones. I do plan on turning it into an FZ6N in the near future though.

The FZ6Ns are really cool. It's neat that you can get all the stuff OEM and make an awesome non US version street fighter (I think that's the case right?).

The black version you have is nice. It really does something to the look of the bike. Makes it look really expensive and high tech.

When did they stop making the FZ6 and make the faired (less hp) FZ6R? I liked the FZ6 a lot more than the new one. I miss both the FZ6 and the SV650 models they were great bikes.

Nice bike! Agreed on the starter bike thing, the first thing I thought when I test rode my CBR was "okay.... this is NOT a beginner bike" lol. Yet so many people say cbr600fs are great first bikes... I don't understand. Anyways, good call on the FZ6N conversion I bet it will look awesome like that, already looks pretty dang good. I was considering one of these but I'm not a fan of sitting super upright lol. Also heard they had a weird power band, really peaky and weird low end? What do you think?

I can't say that I have much to compare it too, but from idle to 8,000 it seems pretty smooth, way more power than what I'm used too. At 8,000 you can feel the dip in power before it climbs, but it's actually kind of exciting feeling. The engine is peaky, but I mean with a 600 you never really have to use all the power.

Yup, you can order all the OEM parts to make it into the FZ6N. You just have to find a good source.

I believe that the FZ6R was released in 2009, and replaced the FZ6 in 2010. I'm not a big fan of that one, cheaper steel frame and less power. The new FZ-09 on the other hand!

Nope! Now I just need to do something about not having any mirrors. I'm not really digging the mirrors that came with the kit.

CRG makes some really nice bar end mirrors. They are expensive, but they are supposed to be the best. I think something like the CRG Arrow, Hindsight, or Blindsight would look good.

I used to be on the FZ6 forum (which is still going strong I think). I bet you could find some member photos showing some different bar end mirror options. I think the Arrow ones look sick, but the other 2 have a more traditional round look, hard to say which would look the best. And do you go 1 mirror on left or both mirrors?

Hmmmm...... look at some of these:

I was actually thinking about going the CRG route. Looks like quality stuff. I'll probably just do one though (they're expensive!). I really don't mind riding without mirrors, I just want to be able to see what's behind me without shoulder checking.

I really like the look of the "arrow" style, but will probably just go with the traditional mirror as they're cheaper and probably look better if I only do one.

RhinoMoto has these sweet bar ends that are designed for the CRGs.

Yeah - bar end weights are the only problem I've heard about with the bar end mirrors. You definitely want to have bar end weights so you don't get buzz through the bars.

Those RhinoMoto bar end weights look really nice. That would make for a complete package - one mirror and one special weight.

Totally agree - going with one the rounds would be best. I guess I just like the Arrow ones because they remind me of Ducati stuff.

I thought this Harley idea was kind of interesting too, but probably not able to work or look right, unless it was higher tech looking -

Well I ended up going with CRG Arrow mirror along with the RhinoMoto bar ends. Installation was a breeze. The CRG mirrors and RhinoMoto bar ends are both top notch. The mirrors are probably the highest quality bit on my bike. Yet, as always there was one little snag.

As can be seen above the clutch lever almost hits the mirror. Actually the clutch lever did hit the mirror, to get the mirror at the proper angle I had to tilt my clutch lever down. Even after doing this the mirror isn't quite where I want it to be at.

Shorty lever time? :BLAA:

Anyways here are a few more photos of the bike with the CRG Arrows.

The last photo was taken after a bug flew down my jacket, causing an emergency stop. (Not really sure what type of bug it was, but it bit me.)

As far as performance goes, these are the best motorcycle mirrors I have ever used. There is still a blind spot when a car is right next to you, but as long as the car is behind your rear wheel you can see the right and left lane from either mirror. It's pretty sweet. In addition if your riding two up you can see your passenger. Finally there is absolutely no vibrations through the mirrors.

Excellent! I was wondering how bar end mirrors would work. I've never had a bike with them before. They look really nice too, very high-tech and expensive.

Your bike looks super nice now! The best looking FZ6 I've seen. It's not over the top at all or gaudy - very classy man! It looks very Ducati-like to me.

Love what you've done with your bike! I agree the FZ6 is too much bike for a beginner. With its relatively heavy weight and high center of gravity combined with 98 HP, it scared the crap out of me when I first test rode it after riding my 250 for a year.

Here is mine in its current state. I've wanted to go naked for the longest time, but I do a lot of highway and cold weather riding so the wind protection is nice to have. Put 17,000 miles on it since February of 2012 and I've loved every minute of it.

Highway riding with the naked isn't so bad. I can get up to about 80-85mph before I notice the difference. If I trying cruising at 90 mph + the wind blast is bad. Speaking of miles man is this bike easy to put miles on. I'v put almost 2,000 miles since I got it on June 22nd. I'm getting to the point now where I feel just as confident in a corner with this bike as I did with the 250. It's amazing how much power it can put down in a corner without breaking traction.

Well, I added a fly screen today. I know that's kind of against the naked conversion but what the hell, I still like the look better than the half fairing. The wind protection is actually pretty good as well. On the plus side it only takes about three minutes to take it on or off. So if I'm not exceeding 65 MPH it can stay off.

I got lucky, this one only had around 1,000 miles on it when I picked it up. It's on track to be well over 10,000 this year though.

@thisisbenji Why is that a bad thing? My 300 that I bought new last year already has over 8k on it. That just means the bike is being used the way it should. It's just now getting broken in.

I'v made some changes to the bike lately.

Installed some setback plates recently to help with my peg scrapping problem. They work wonders!

Then I removed my center stand and rear passenger pegs. Dropped about 7 lbs off the bike. I never thought I would remove the center stand, but after the setback plates my heel kept resting on it. Ugh.

That being said it does really clean up the look of the bike, and the passenger pegs can be put back in a couple of minutes if I want to take the girlfriend for a ride.

Today installed a USB charger for my phone! Finally I can run GPS without the fear of killing my iPhones battery. Also put a Triboseat passenger cover on the bike to help the girlfriend from sliding around.

Well, I've made a few more changes.

Different headlight, handlebar clamps, and fender eliminator!

I dig. I also like that you take real pictures of your bike to show off what you've done with it, not just phone pictures taken with the phone jammed in on individual things that doesn't even attempt to show the big picture. Pictures like that make me anxious.

What can I say, I like taking photos.

Close ups are good too though, just depends on what the subject is.

My FZ6 is best view from a distance LOL.

Close-up's are great, but they have to have a picture from back a ways first so you can get an idea of the bigger picture, then the zoomed in photo has the finer local detail that you're trying to present in more depth.

True, here's a few close ups of the new light.

These were before I added the blinkers.
