Gauging interest: Running light/ Blinker module for 250R and 300R

I had some time on my hands to work on a new idea. I want to see if there's interest for a Plug and Play module that will turn your existing turn signals into running lights. They'll stay on as long as the bike is on. They'll blink off when you turn on your turn signals. Kind of like a reverse turn signal. You can see an example of what I did to my R6 in the video below. There would be 3 connections. The power and ground would come from the license plate connection. Then the other two would connect between the bike's front signal harness and the lights themselves.

This would allow the OEM or aftermarket signals to be running lights and blinkers.

I would call this the Type I module. Price would be $34.99 shipped.

Another option would be to build the module to run a set of auxiliary lights, such as LED mirrors or the LED strips that I have on my R6. This would include 2 extra wires (+12v & ground) for each side of the bike so you could connect those lights. The leads to the auxiliary lights would not have any special connectors, but I could include some spade connectors that you would crimp on.

This would be the Type II module and would cost $39.99.

Is there a way to get those white LED's to shut off completely when the flasher is active? I'm thinking like Audi's and many cars that do that. I know it is done by some switchback LED bulbs. I'm thinking they have some boards to 'think' for them?

Just a thought that might get some more interest. Those strips look pretty awesome Tri. ...and you said you'd never mess with your headlights.

Sure, You could probably use a LM555 timer to have it shut off, but that becomes a complicated circuit. I did that on purpose because I want the drivers in front of me to know that I'm changing lanes so they don't accidentally cut in front of me. Like I said, the video is just an example of what the module can do. The Type I would be to connect to the OEM or flushmount blinkers that you might have installed. I know not everyone has extra lights. That's what the Type II is for.

And those strips are just stuck to the outside. I didn't open my headlights up, so I technically haven't done anything to them

In the Type I style, would the light turn completely off during the blinking mode, or would it be a second filament that comes on and off while the running light remains on all the time?

I bought a set of flush mounts that had three wires to have a running light and got it wired up. But the running light remains on while the brighter turn light flashes. Having a definite on then off blink would be something I would be interested in since I worry my front isn't clear enough as to my intent.

Both types would cause the light to shut off completely. The module uses a latching relay which disrupts the current.

I'm not supplying any LED strips with this kit. It's only for a module to allow you to connect to anything you want. Type 2 would be good for LED strips.

That's pretty tight, so it turns signals into running lights... Interesting. Especially when a person usually does hand an arm signals anyhow

I may be interested since it does turned them off. But I'd have to see how much effort would be in converting my existing dual filament socket back to a single filament. Or might be a good reason to go LEDs....

Not committing yet, still in the maybe group. But i like your solution over my current set up.

I went ahead and ordered everything I need to make 5 kits. Once I'm done, I'll let you guys know they're ready. If they don't sell well, I'll just try to sell the 5 and that will be it.

Teri- If you have a dual filament bulb, all you would need to do is disconnect one of the power wires. I would probably disconnect the dimmer one. Then install this kit inline and you connect the power wire from the kit to the brighter one and that's it.

Hey @CThunder-blue, I've ordered some LED turn signals since i noticed that my running lights have blown (i think, both sides are out) and will be ordering your diode kit next month when those come in.

Ballpark quesstimate when you will have figured this plug in out and have it ready? Maybe get two shipments for the price of one?

I was hoping to have it done this weekend, but the boxes I ordered for them are too small. I ordered another set, but they won't arrive for another week or so. I can knock off $2 for shipping both at once.

Cool. My stuff is on a slow boat from China so it'll be a week or so before they come in. It might be perfect timing in that case! I'll have to see how many connections I need to get from you as I saw a Y adapter on your page as well.

You shouldn't need the Y adapters unless you plan on having more than the two lights up front. Are your new lights setup with OEM connectors?

No, based on the pictures they are bare wires. I was going to solder the OEM connecters on to make for an easy plugin.

The tail light is listed as integrated. Normally I don't like those as I feel there is not enough difference for the car behind me to see me and my intentions. So my thought is to leave the turn signals of the tail light unplugged. However, if I plug it in and find I like it, I will hook both it and the side turn signals up using the Y adapter so there is no doubt as to what I am doing.

Hi Teri- I've got the box done . I've installed the OEM connectors, so all you'll need to do is solder on your lights and you'll be set. I'm not sure how long those wires will be on your new lights, so you may need to extend the wires out some. PM me your email and I can send an invoice for it and the diode kit.

No connectors yet so haven't plugged things in, hopefully will be able to get it all together tomorrow.

I saw the DIY for the diode so will hook that up following those steps.

Is the running light module as easy as it looks? White connectors into the tail light plug? Blue connectors into the turn signal connectors? How can i tell which is left vs right or just swap them if i get it backwards?

Will the fact that the front turn signals are remaining regular bulbs affect this or do all of them need to be LEDs? The front flush mounts i ordered won't work for me so can't change over yet.

Glad you got it. It is as easy as it looks . It doesn't matter which side you put the wires on. Each wire set contains it's own relay and each relay receives the signal from that wire set. The white connectors go in between the license plate light harnesses and you plug the blue ones into the signals, just as you guessed.

The relays are good up to 10 Amps and are 12v dc, so you can use regular bulbs or LEDs.

a buddy of mine did a set up like that on his R1, but could only get one side to blink with the blinkers, they tried everything they could think of with no luck.

LMK if he needs help with it. I'm guessing he may have only used 1 relay or his wiring is messed up somewhere.

I would need to see his wiring schematic or an explanation of his full setup to help.

edit: I just realized, you're saying your friend connected some led strips directly to his turn signals, so that they would blink when the turn signals come on right? So, not really like my setup.

Right now i am attempting to come up with an idea to run led strips on my race body work to act as brake lights, but not having much luck in finding a cheap option.

I don't think you're going to find anything bright enough to use as a brake light.

I bought the Type 1 module to convert my turn signals into running lights.

Learned a few things while installing - my bike was all sorts of messed up. But, the module works perfectly once I sorted out the rats nest known as my electrical system.

I swapped out my cobbled together running lights and the poorly chosen EL12 (followed by the even poorer choice of a NAPA EP34) flasher for the correct Tridon EP34. The installation of the module is super easy, just attach the power in between the plug for the license plate light, then plug the signals into the ends of the module. Makes a whole lot of sense when you see it because there really is no other way for it to plug in.

The running lights come on immediately with the key since they are hooked into the license plate light. The turn signals alternate with the rear since its turning off to produce the blink.

Which wires are you referring to? I'm waiting on some connectors from Japan, so it may take a week or two to have a unit made.

Yeah, you're probably better off wrapping them yourself. I've been selling my products for 2+ years and only heatshrink when necessary. This module doesn't need any, but if you don't like the wire coloring, you should wrap them.
