DIY Painted wind screen

Well my friend who WORKED at the tint shop does no more, (owners daughter dumped him so he fired) so I decided after much thought that I would just paint my wind screen. I never look through is i don't tuck that low and if I try I'm hitting my helmet on the tank. I also don't like the looks of a double bubble, (just a personal preference) So here is a DIY on painting your wind screen.

First look at kkim's DIY on replacing the windscreen http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13507



Then these are the things you will need, along with a razor blade and scissors, some blue masking tape, some paper, and this part is key the KRYLON FUSION for plastic. I got mine at Wal-mart. and got the Gloss black.



Then begin to mask off your wind screen. the Side that is inside the curve will be the painted so be careful to mask well the other side to protect from over spray.

To mask the "bead across the top of the wind screen I affixed 50% of the masking tape to the out side then Rolled it over to the back (to be painted) side



I then took my NEW (has to be SHARP) razor blade and cut away the masking where the bead ends on the back side and pealed the masking tape away.



After I took the masking tape again and placed it round the edge of the wind screen (the edge like you were trying to look at how thick it is) and affixed it even with the back (going to be painted side) and the rolled the excess over to the front. also notice how I went over the mounting bracket to make your tape cover these bits simply cut the tape like this... just fold over to the front side.



Just slice the tape onto little fingers and over lap them as you fold.



Once you have the sides well masked, simply take some news paper and mask off the remaining front side. this is the view looking threw the to painted side at the final masking job.

Then paint the unmasked side, shake the can WELL (yes untill your arm hurts about 3 min). Next repress all your masking, (just to be safe). Begin to paint with short strokes holding the can about 8-10 inches from the screen,perpendicular to it, laying down a thin, even layer of paint, building it up until you can no longer see through the screen, allow to dry, about 30-45 min and then apply a 2nd coat with the same method.

Then allow the screen to dry fully over 10-12 hours, I left mine over night.

Remove the masking and behold your lovely new black wind screen.



I have to say the Krylon is AMAZING, the results are almost glass like and supper smooth.

Masking is an art to me... I build 1/48 scale model airplanes and when I go to air brush a plane and have to mask a windshield that is no bigger than my fingers made this really really easy.

Inspired by this, i painted my windscreen today. Looks great. Thanks for the DIY, Kit.

One thing i liked alot with this, is that you don't have to have any skills in painting. I got a load of dust in the paint, and was worried of the result. But when i got it mounted on the bike again, it's just not visible at all because it gets all dark under the windscreen, so you don't see a thing. You will need a flashlight to see it.

That masking-job you did there is impressive. I'm sure you would have started crying if you saw pictures of my masking. You have done this before, i could tell.

This is what I'm used to masking. It's a 1/48 scale B-17g...yes that's my finger next to it for scale, the windows on this took me about a day to mask all 7 of them.

When removing the windscreen has anyone had troubles attaching it again? I recently took the screws out of my bike all over and painted the heads black so there is less silver on my bike. When I went back to screw in the two bottom screws for the windscreen they wouldn't thread back in and then one of them just pushed all the way in without threading at all. After looking at it closer and checking out what was wrong I noticed that the part with the threads is attached with rubber and I had pushed too hard on that and it broke off. I still have the piece that broke off, but it's almost impossible to reach under there and thread it onto the screw so i've just left those two screws out. I just don't understand why anyone would think it was a good idea to attach that stuff with some flimsy rubber. If anyone doesn't understand what i'm talking about, I can post some pics of the piece that broke off.

What you are referring to are called "wellnuts". Unfortunately they are very brittle and weak rubber and have a tendancy of deteriorating and falling apart. There are many places you can buy replacements for... you can do a simple search on here for "wellnuts" and come up with more information.

Previous owner did ****** job on the screen and I want to repaint.
Not sure if paint stripper would damage the plastic.

The screen is not 100% black and the bike is not 100% green, but hopefully this can tie you over until you do yours.

The ONLY time I ever notice it is if I try to get in a full tuck doing 100+ other then that I never even notice it. The only other thing is the GoPro, I cant suction cup it to the tank and have it record through the screen, but there are so many other positions for the camera that it really is a big issue

Just did this mid last night and the results are amazing! I initially grabbed the wrong paint ay Lowe's; got a can of Valspar and while it's great stuff for interior walls, it was horrible on plastic. The Nylon Fusion worked perfectly and my bike looks so hott!

Has anybody done this using something other than the gloss black? Flat/Matte black perhaps? Or a colour other than black (red, green, blue, etc. to match the bike?)

And the unanswered question from above, can you undo it if you do a bad job?

use what ever color you want, as long as it's safe for plastic...

your spraying the inside of the wind screen, you really can't screw it up, unless you spray too close and create runs or something silly like that, and or you don't mask off what you don't want painted.

Can you undo ? you could, you have to strip off the paint, but in doing so, you will probably mess up the wind screen, by either scratching it, or melting it if using some sort of paint stripper.....

Typically once you do this, you really don't want to undo it.......probably cheaper to buy a new one

No, do not sand. Use Krylon Fusion spray paint and it'll turn out great. The only thing you'll want to do for prep is mask the outside and clean the inside.
