Powerlet 12v outlet and GPS

Installed Powerlet 12 volt outlet on right panel:

Currently have a cheap Tom Tom One GPS that when needed I can suction cup to the Speedo since the GPS displays my speed anyway. The suction cup has help up on all of the last few bikes I have had with now issues (ZX14, HD Street Glide, WR250 Supermoto). This is a small 3.5" GPS but I will be upgrading it soon to a 4 or 5 inch version. Anyway, on to the pics:

Thats a great idea where you put that 12v. Is it a water proof one?

Thanks, I mounted it there and at that angle to allow for different sized chargers. Currently I just use the GPS or iPhone charger.

Yes, the Powerlet does come with a rubber cover that protects it from water (when not in use).

I used the 48" Powerlet Cigarette Socket Panel Kit.

You just gave me an idea of where to place it-I was going to mount one on my bike soon.

There is an unused mounting hole a little below that area above and to the right of the radiator. A lot of people have mounted sockets there. In fact, some Walmart stores carry a marine one with a spring-loaded flip top intended for boats (most likely only carried at Supercenters), which works very well.

Nice and clean installation. It looks like the bike came like that from the factory.

I have the same TomTom on mine with the suction cup on speedo. Works really well and it lasts for a few days riding. However I just have a thing about drilling holes into the plastics of the bike.... it just makes me shudder. I resort to heavy duty hidden velcro and black zip ties that can't really be seen. You did a great job tho in the hook up. What did you splice into for the Powerlet wiring?

I don't mind a little drilling as long as the result looks like a factory finish. If ever needed I could pick up that small black trim piece from the dealer or one of the parted out bikes around.

The Powerlet wiring connects directly to the battery but I'm getting ready to build or order a fuse block with relay for additional accessories.

Nice clean install. I do think I'd rather have that socket switched when using it on a motorcycle.

It looks great, but how do you know your speed in an area with tall buildings or when riding through a tunnel?

Very tempted to do this but there are so many speed cameras in the UK and not knowing your speed some of the time could be a problem

Personally I got myself one of these: http://buybits.com/product/7382.aspx

Will post some photos when I try it out - snowing here at the moment so bike is not in use

The 12v is mostly used for recharging my iPhone/iPad but I use the GPS once a month or so. While using my GPS in DC the buildings never caused me to drop a signal so I haven't run into that yet. If you wanted for judging your speed you could figure your speed per gear/rpm if you were worried about dropping your GPS signal... or just put it on your tach, dash or underside of windscreen instead.

It's amazing how much more solid GPS receivers have become in the last few years. 10 years ago our receivers would drop consistently in cities, under bridges, etc. But ever since chips like the SirfStar III and similar, devices almost never lose lock once they obtain it. Some of mine can even pick up a satellite lock while indoors in our home.

I think software improved. Also on my audi satnav, it has a compass and connected to the speedo, so it knows exactly where you are even in tunnels

Seems tomtom were a bit lazy with their iPhone software though, seems to jump to adjacent roads or lose signal all the time in London

Software has definitely made great strides as well, along with additional sensors like a compass; but that particular SirfStar chip made a night and day difference in sensitivity from V2 to III.

It's just a tomtom thing... it's how their window mount is. My Garmin window mount doesn't go flat either... but I've had a tomtom before.
