MotoGP 2012 Qatar Friday practice report—Lorenzo breaks Stoner's spell

The reigning world champion had a number of small problems, traffic included, and didn’t bother using the softer Bridgestone rear, which has no chance of being a race tire, to set a scorching lap time. Instead he concentrated on the race and finished third to a pair of Yamahas, one of which was expected, the second less so.
Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo set the fastest lap of the weekend near the end of the 45-minute session deep in the Qatari night. Lorenzo had removed Stoner from the top of the time sheets with his 14th lap to claim temporary supremacy. Then Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow had the lap of a lifetime to take the top spot, by far his best MotoGP placing. But Lorenzo wasn’t done and on his 15th lap he dropped the session’s best time to 1:55.302. Crutchlow ended up second and Stoner third.
The session was the second of the day and third of the weekend and served as prelude to Saturday’s lone session, an hour of qualifying starting at 7:55 p.m. Lorenzo and Crutchlow both used Bridgestone’s softer rear to set their times, while Stoner stuck with the harder option, which everyone will use in the race.
