MotoGP Qatar 2012 race report—Lorenzo emerges victorious

In a battle of the sport’s elite, Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo rode masterfully to upset favorite Casey Stoner, the Repsol Honda rider who slipped to third after being passed by teammate Dani Pedrosa late in the 22 lap race that began when the starting lights went out at 10:00 p.m. local time.
Stoner had won the previous three season-openers in the desert and had dominated off-season testing. But he wasn’t as dominant in the practice and qualifying, setting tongues wagging about the possibility that he wouldn’t steamroll the competition. When he began to slow past mid-race, the immediate speculation led to tires. Qatar was the first race that where the riders got what they wanted; tires that warmed up faster, but at the expense of life. The predictions were for the tires to go off early-around lap four or five-and more noticeably around lap 12.
None of which had anything to do with Stoner’s problem. Arm pump was the reason Stoner slowed, a condition he hadn’t suffered since Silverstone 2010 and one which isn’t always easily treatable. But he has two free weekends between now and the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez to seek treatment and is adamantly opposed to surgery.
“It fixes the problem, but if you start to build muscle again you have the same problem,” he said. “I prefer to fix it without surgery.”
