EDIT: This thread is for jetting specs only; jetting discussion can continue in this discussion thread. (http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=11178)

The purpose of this thread is to consolidate the information from people who have done any type of work to their carburetor jetting to improve the stock bike's rideability. Your contributions are what will make this a valuable tool for anyone looking to rejet their bike in the future.

Are you nuts!!??? Why would anyone want to even consider rejetting their perfectly good, brand new bike?

The stock 250R is marketed as a high mileage, economy bike and as such, the factory has seen to jet the bike as lean as possible to eek out the very best MPG numbers and to also adhere to emissions laws in the US. Kawasaki has done a very good job in selecting the best combination of jetting components to make the 250R a very miserly, gas sipping vehicle. It is ironic, however, that the very jetting which makes the bike a gas sipper, makes it a very unfriendly beginner bike as far as throttle control and rideability. Add to that, poor quality control at setting the mixture screws properly from the factory and you end up with a bike that is difficult to start, takes a long time to warm up and even when warm is difficult to get moving from a stop without revving it to about 4-5k just to get moving smoothly. Add to that the sometimes unexpected hiccup when the bike is just starting to get moving and you end up with a lot of dropped bikes from beginners. Instead of being rider friendly, it makes riding the bike lot more difficult than it needs to be. Rejetting your bike will address this low speed glitch. If you would like more info on jetting, this is a very good primer… http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/I_want_to_improve_my_carburetor_jetting

Any other benefits?

Glad you asked!! With rejetting, it is possible to extract more power out of the little 250 motor. The factory tuned it for mileage… you can tinker with the jetting to extract more power, though be advised gas mileage will be affected. What I like is that rejetting increases the amount of power available in the lower rpms ranges and in doing so makes the bike much easier to ride and much more rider friendly… two things that greatly benefit someone new to riding a motorcycle.

So, on to the purpose of this thread... In brief, please cut and paste the following as I have in post #2 and help start building a database in the 250R forum. As much as possible, please stay on topic (yeah, right!!) so the information will be easily accessible by those searching for jetting help in the future. You are more than welcome to come back and post new jetting specs in the future in another post if you should redo your jetting. Please comment on any improvements rejetting did for you if you do repost.

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: With the 3 washers under each needle, the bike seems like it might be a bit rich in the midrange. I have also plugged the Kleen air system to eliminate popping/backfiring I was getting at small throttle opening during deceleration. Carburators have been synced which has helped to smooth out the idling and intial takeoff.

MAIN JET: 112

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: 3

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 2-3/4 turns out from bottom, initially

ELEVATION: sea level to 3800 ft.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

switched from configuration in post #2 to a no air box and a single K&N filter (K&N P/N R-0990) plus the installation of a factory Pro jetting kit.

Initial settings of 112 mains, clip in the 3rd position, and mixture settings of 2 3/4 turns out from bottom revealed a bike that pulls harder than my previous setup and carburetes a bit cleaner throughout the entire rev range. Not mind blowing, warp drive, eye blurring acceleration, but definitely more power than the stock air box and washers under stock needles setup. It's getting closer to where I want to be. :D

I do feel the mains might be a bit rich and the mids might need a bit of tweaking. Carbs were resynced, but it was not that different from when I set it when doing the washers under the needles.

I've played with the mixture screws from my initial 2 3/4 due to the low end feeling boggy. I richened it out to 3 turns out and it did seem to improve a slight hesitation a had when I would blip the throttle after the bike was fully warmed up. Bike ran well at sea level, but a bit lethargic on the bottom end.

Readjusted the mixture using the "screw in the mixture screw until the idle drops, then back it off until the idle returned to normal" method. With that method, I found the bike had a slight surge while cruising in 5th or 6th with the throttle barely cracked, which said to me the idle circuit was a bit lean.

I last backed the mixture screw out 1/4 of a turn from my last setting and the bike seems perfect as far as the idle circuit is concerned. Warm up is quick at both sea level and 3800 ft and the bike does not surge at low throttle cruising settings. At this time, I have no idea where the mixture screws are set, only that the bike pulls nicely at lower rpms and runs cleanly without any bogging or surging. I will report back when I have the chance to pull the carbs at a future date. All I know for now is that it runs good when the mixture screws are set up in this manner.

What did I gain from going to my new configuration? More top end power, smoother power delivery throughout the entire powerband and cleaner carburetion when twisting the throttle at any throttle setting position.

What did I lose? I feel the midrange power "hump" from removing the air box is gone, so the bike does not "feel" as responsive in the 5-8k range. This is not to be confused with less power, as there is definitely more power in that range than w/ the air box... it's just that the oomph at that range is absent replaced by a smooth roll on in power.

Future plans calls for leaning out the mains to 110, playing with the clip positions in both richer and leaner steps and further fine tuning of the mixture screws.

As a base setting, the recommendations made by Vex (thank you, Vex!!) are great and pretty close to get the bike running well with the air box delete and separate air cleaner installed. My attempts will be to zero in on making the bike respond crisper and more aggressively throughout the entire range for my daily commute. :)

If you have any comments or questions regarding the changes I've made or changes I plan to make, I would be more than happy to continue discussion in the jetting database discussion thread...

jetting... isn't it fun and simple?? :p

MAIN JET: 110

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: 4

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 2-3/4 turns out from bottom, initially

ELEVATION: sea level to 3800 ft.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

Went one step leaner on the main from a 112 to a 110. Bike pulled a bit better all the way to redline.

When I did that, the midrange was anemic and the bike showed signs of being lean at idle, (long warm up and had to use choke a lot to get the bike warm) so I moved the clip from the 3rd position to the 4th. Midrange improved greatly and warmup barely needs choke at cold startup.

Had to redo the mixture crews settings. I've found the best way to set it is to the turn it in till the idle starts dropping then turn it back out about 1/8 to 1/4 turn. I fine tune the exact mixture screw position by blipping the throttle when the bike is fully warm and watch how the tach needle settles down to the set idle speed. If it hangs above the idle speed, then comes down, the bike is a bit lean and I turn the mixture screw out (CCW) about 1/8 of a turn on both carbs. If you blip the throttle and the idle falls below the set idle speed and then comes back up, the mixture is rich and you need to turn the mixture screw CW about 1/8 turn. Repeat until you get it so when you blip the throttle, the idle settles back to your preset idle speed. I use 1500RPM as my idle speed only because it is easy to read precisely on the tach face.

Bike now idles fine, rips through the midrange and pulls all the way to redline with no problems. It may not be perfect, yet, but it is better than my previous setup. Will live with this for awhile to see if it has any shortcomings. I have not heard any pinging from the smaller 110 main.

I was running a little rich on the top end with the 112 jets, but figured the cooler weather would cancel this out and it has. On the cooler days the bike really performs disturbingly well. Probably in the spring I'll drop to the 110's and try them out. I also drilled the carburetor slides to improve the throttle response a tad. I aim on eventually testing out different runner lengths (That is the hose that runs between the head and the carburetor) to try and refocus my powerband down a bit. As for the mixture screws I don't really keep track on the exact turnage, but the 2-3/4 out seems to be a good starting point.

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: Originally I tried putting the 100 main jets in but they turned out to be too rich. After moving down to the 98's I tuned the bike the way DynoJet recommends in the installation instructions. What I've found is that the bike feels a little sluggish around 8-9k rpm (this was prior to changing sprockets) so I'm thinking the needle needs to come a little. One day when I have time I'll set the clip to the 4th groove and mess with the idle screws to get the tuning spot on. For now it seems to idle fine just not perfect.

Don't have much to add since I just got the jetting in this weekend. But I notice that it pulls hard to redline from 1st to 5th. Pulls hard to around 8k in 6th gear then it takes awhile for it to hit redline.

It has been cold the past few days. Had some fog the prior week, and now rain/hail this week.

When I blip the throttle at idle (1500 rpm) the rev drops below and then it takes awhile for it to back up.

The following is weird: When my high beam lights are on, it idles at 1500 rpm. When I turn off my high beam it idles harder like around ~1600. Don't know why this is.

Will add more later since I haven't been on the bike that much to give a good report.

When I first installed the exhaust and jet kit, I was using the 100 main jet and 2 washers under the needles. It was way rich at the bottom and would bog down considerably. Sustained freeway speeds at 9k also killed my mileage down to around 30mpg. So I removed one of the washers and skipped down to the 96 main jet. High end is fine - mileage is back to around 45-50. But I'm considering removing the last washer as it still seems a little rich at the bottom.

Spent the weekend trying out various main jets after pulling the airbox (first attempt tuning). Honestly can't tell much difference between 106-110 mains (pulls pretty hard and consistently from about 6k to redline) so went with the 108, but feel like I lost a little top speed when I pulled the airbox, so may need to step back up to 110s. Had DJ100 mains in before the airbox delete. Agree that the bike is considerably louder when accelerating hard, but getting to like it so long as I've got my plugs in.

With needles @ 3rd from top: Bike seems to be more stable from a dead stop after tuning the mixture screws (bogs less), but it still seems to drop the acceleration ball a bit so think I may need to lean the needles a bit yet.

Edit: With needles @ 4th from top: Bike seems happier, but still hesitates from a dead stop with lots of throttle. However the rpms are only dropping a hair and it's not bad at all. Still seems to surge when going from idle to on throttle, but suspect that's just the machine at work.

I do feel like im in a higher RPM when I get to 60, but I will double check and see where its at. Also when I blip the throttle, it drops below but doesnt do it all the time. Sometimes it goes back to normal right away. I do smell gas more than I did before, maybe do to bigger jets compared to a 96 jet.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE'S JETTING SETUP:

This is a rejet from 112 main jet with Yoshi CF pipe. I switched over to Akrapovic pike (much quieter to my liking). The bike feels a little sluggish but with the BRT TIS that I added shortly after that, it eliminated that a bit. Anyhow, I got a replacement pilot jet from FP (they didn't send me one)...so I busted the carb open again, pulled the slider out and drill a little hole with the #70 drill bit, then popped in 110 mainjet, raise the needle to #4 click, swapped out stock #38 pilot jet to #40, wrapped everything up, tuned the idle mixture, resynched the carb...
The bike pulls like mad all the way to redline...no sluggish anywhere...i think i'm happy with this for now.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 3 turns

ELEVATION:see the ocean out the window

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: Was pretty easy to figure mains. Started at 110 and had lean surging so after raising needle a notch, still surging a bit so tried the 112s with the needle 3rd from top and seemed spot on so I didn't mess with it further. Left floats alone because bike had no problem with full throttle at low revs. Moved to mixture screws and really had to fuss with them a lot. Kept hanging and would hardly idle when coldish and reved to the moon when hot. Tried the turn until it misses technique but couldn't really hear miss. So just started over and backed em both out to 3 full turns and now it is better...still lean hangs a bit but idle is stable and the minor backfires at high vacuum are now just a little burble. May need a bigger pilot if 3 turns doesn't do it but will wait for warm air to be sure. Really enjoyed tinkering as I am a complete newbie to wrenching my bike and it all went the way it was supposed to go.

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: Per FactoryPro starting point recommendation - clip in third groove from the top, three washers above

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: Initially 2 1/2 turns out, now 2 1/4, going to try 2 flat. The bike runs just fine at all rpms and loads, but when the throttle is blipped at idle the speed drops below the idle set point and returns.

ELEVATION: Sea level to about 150 feet

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

- Pilot jet replaced with the #40 alternate that came in the jet kit
- DynoJet dynamometer results:
- Peak HP 28.91
- Peak torque 14.37

The dyno guy said "You're fine... you don't need to do anything." He also said his dyno is a bit "tight" and the real numbers may be slightly higher.

Air/fuel was dancing around the "ideal" line... maybe just a tiny bit on the rich side of things overall, but not enough to warrant making any changes.

Fuel economy after a week and two tanks of fuel is between 55 and 63 mpg, driveability is excellent, choke is not needed at startup, and the sound is to die for.

A huge THANK YOU to kkim, who recommended this exact setup. Except for the idle mixture screw settings, he enabled me to nail it on the first try!

MAIN JET: 110

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: 4

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 3.0

ELEVATION: 770 feet

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: Began with the 112.5 main, pulled well. Tried the 110 and oh yea, that's the ticket! Pulled ever stronger to redline.

Began with the clip in the 3rd position on the needle but had surging at higher RPM's with small throttle openings. Moved clip to the 4th position, surging eliminated and bike pulled much better in the 5k to 8k range.

Idle circuit was a bit of a challenge, the Factory Pro supplied 40 pilot jet had the idle circuit very rich. Very boggy until 5k or so. Idle was impossible to set and bike would stall if the throttle was touched. Float height was within spec but to lean out the circuit enough the air/fuel mixture screws needed to be at .75, still very soft, no power in the low RPM range, idle still dropping below the set point. Returned to the stock 38 pilot jet, set the mixture screws to 2.5 and eventually settled on a mixture setting of 3.0. Idle is solid, low RPM steady state cruise smooth, bike will take full throttle at 3k in 2nd gear cleanly.

The carburetor slides were each drilled with a #70 drill bit, the throttle response was improved especially during rev-matching downshifting...

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: I felt a huge difference with the recommended settings with the DJ Needles and the Main Jet. Pulls stronger in the mids and highs, but I set the mixture screws to about 2.75 at first and I practically chopped off power below 3.5k rpms. Changed it to 3 turns out which is recommended by the instructions and I got the power back, but it still felt a little off. So I turned it maybe around 1/8th of a turn and adjusted my idle so it's a little closer to 1.4k. Perfection. Now, if only the bike had a 7th gear.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

With the K&N on and stock jet settings, it was so lean I could not go past maybe 1/4 throttle without it stuttering and hesitating (and not picking up any more speed). It was like riding a moped, and I could not get above about 50mph. I had changed the jets to the 112s anticipating needing them with the custom exhaust, but will probably be keeping the stock exhaust at least for a while and have ordered smaller jets. I hadn't tried the 110s with the stock exhaust.

After playing with the mixture screws, I settled around 3.5 turns out (roughly), and now it starts up much better than before and will cleanly pull from under 2k RPM. The low-end response has picked up enough that even with my 16/41 gearing (25% taller than stock), I will occasionally just leave it in 2nd (same ratio as stock 3rd gear) if I am doing a lot of stopping and going, and it will move just fine for regular traffic / neighborhood streets.

with the custom/aftermarket exhaust i think you will most likely need to upgrade to #40 pilots... quite a few people have changed that after replacing the air filter, and using a full exhaust system. wouldn't want the needles to fall out due to turning them out too far!

Now the bike pulls all the way to red line. Its not a massive increase in power, just a lot more rider friendly and can be pushed harder if you want too. Running a little rich down low though and fuel economy has gone out the window, but that could be due to constantly going to red line as I could not do this before :D . With skorkel in, 2 to 2.25 was just right. When I pulled the snorkle, I started with AP/Dynojet recommended 3 turns and it was richer than Oprah, and just as slow. Dialed it back to 2.5 turns and it was much better, but still just a bit boggy at low revs, with a glorious rumble but not pulling hard. If 3 turns was rich as Oprah, 2.5 was MacBeth: "Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." Against all odds, 2.25 is just about right. Maybe a tenth of turn lean, but dang close to perfect. Nice pull throughout the revs, almost get it to pop on very hard engine braking but not quite. Drops revs well after accel. Wierd that 2.25 works when 3 is recommended, but there you go.

100 main was a little too rich.
Opened up the snorkel hole a bit and that brought everything back in line.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

So with this being my first bike I think, after 1.5 weeks, I finally got the settings right. I started with just shimming after installing the Air Filters which did help the pull off the line, etc, but didn't do much noticeable towards needing choke and the time of such. I got the 110 jets and it was way too lean with just those on so put washers on one by one till I ended up with an overall smoother going at 3. For the mixture screws, I went the route of having the engine warmed up to get the setting right. I had gone about it many times before but, with it being my first bike, I didn't really know what to listen for. Having the engine on and warmed up as you turn the screws lets you really hear where the sweet spot is.

I do, still, have to start it with choke, but the amount needed has gone down to half instead of full. Also, it's much quicker in being able to take it off, about 2min of riding and it's golden. Idle speed set at 1500rpm and now it's able to hold it quite well. When the throttle is just turned real quick it drops back down to idle instantly, whereas before it would hang for a few seconds before dropping back.

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: I did move the floats 1mm to lean it out just a little bit as the A/F guage was reading rich and the bike was giving me feedback that convinced me it was rich. My final setup was giving me the readings (between 11.5 and 13.5) and the pull I was looking for throughout the rev range.

Also, I did try the 110 since it's been really hot out recently and adjusted the needles and mixture screws accordingly. It felt decent, but my readings were pointing towards being a bit lean up top, not horribly lean, but in the 14's. I switched to a 112 and that took care of that, but I was a bit rich down low, so I adjusted the floats a little and this moved me into the range I wanted with the readings and it also felt good.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:
Started with 108 mains and clip in 4th. Could not get low rpms set right. Mixture screws had no effect, the rpms hanged for forever. Took it out for a ride around the block. idle to 5000 wasn't that good, 5000 to 8500 pulled hard, 8500 to redline just bogged out at 10500 and never reached redline. Changed the e-clip to the 5th position and quickly tested before going to bed, the rpms return back to idle after blipping the throttle. Next changed main jets to 104 (my kit was missing 106 otherwise i would have tried those) and reset the mixture screws to 2 1/2 turn out. Took it for a ride around the block and it pulls hard all the way to redline, it feels so much better than stock. at low rpms the throttle response feels instant but possibly slightly rich. some fine tuning left. need to go for a longer ride to be sure. going to try moving back to the 4th clip now and/or try adjusting the mixutre screws, and order some 106 and see if those work.

Took the bike on the highway, found it was rich at midrange, moved to the 4th clip. Took it out again it was still rich in the midrange but at higher rpms it lost power and most of the time wouldn't get over 10000. I ordered 106 main jets and installed those and moved to the 3rd clip at the same time. The bike runs pretty near perfect. I might play around with the mixture screws a bit and move the clip one more time to see if i get any better results.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: Installed the DynoJet kit exactly according to the instructions. It does feel like the mid range is a bit dead so may go up to the 4th clip on the needles to see how that works. But at this point I am very happy with the bike and it pulls smoothly through the entire rev range with no noticeable dips in power. No burbles or spluttering or anything out of the ordinary. The carbs have also been sync'd which seems to have made it smoother overall. Left the idle crews at 3 full turns as recommended and have not touched it since it feels OK to me, but perhaps I don't know any better. UPDATE: Bike did not feel perfect while riding at constant throttle with some very slight surging so I went up one size on the jets to 100. It now feels a little better and may even be a tad rich but that is much better than it feeling lean.

Still needs low end tweaking, but mid and high revs feel great. Didn't want to mess with the idle screw until I figure my jets out. After pulling the carbs about 5 times.. I'm ready to just rip out that airbox............ Either way, hopefully getting on a dyno this weekend to see results

Removed airbox finally. 110 felt great, 112 felt better, 115 felt boggy.

When WOT at 13k rpm first gear (around 30-40mph) when shifting into second my lil ninjette actually does a small power wheelie (about a foot off the ground). It's wayyyyy fun in safe moderation (and didn't happen before I removed airbox). Other then that, there is significantly more pull all the way from 2-13k rpm now. I dropped from about 50-55 MPG to around 45-50 MPG city ride but honestly don't mind.

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:
I did all my engine mods yesterday at the same time, save for shimming 2 washers last year. I decided to take the bike to school 60mi each way to see how it runs through the entire range. At first I had the screws at 2 1/2 out but the tach was all over the place with trouble keeping it running when cold before leaving for this morning. Turned them out another quarter after I got home from school today, and it started right up with a steady RPM. I also pulled the plugs to see if I was too lean/rich. Figured a 60mi ride with a final WOT once I got in the garage would give me an accurate read (pic posted below).

In regards to performance difference. I love it, the exhaust has a nice deep tone with a little burble on deccel, and I had mild power wheelie on a 1-2 shift. Being that my bike is fightered the airbox delete also adds a lot to the bike visually.

2011Ninja 250R Bone stock.

This info needs to be on the website for guys like me. I searched every web board, and jetting resource. I wanted to do this job once. The bike is for my wife - ridability was key - not ultimate top end. But nowhere in the FP instructions do you have an example of a completely bone stock bike. So I guessed. You got it right!!
Kit - the CRB-K04-1.0
Altitude: Phoenix AZ - 1100ft
No advancer
Main jet:88
Pilot:40
Needle: 3rd clip
Main air jet - stock
Temp:90's
Snorkel: intact
Fuel screw: 2 turns out
Results; warms quickly, pulls nicely off idle through the entire rev range.
No backfiring.
Bike is so much more user friendly now with useable torque down in the low RPM range (leaving a stoplight, or doing exercises during a safety course). No flat spots- all the way to redline. Mine is dead on. I consider this a manditory mod.
Please publish this, at least, on your website, so that guys like me will have a point of reference with a stock bike. Apples to apples. Thanks Eric S. Mesa, AZ

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: I worked my way up slowly, lots of carb pulls and rejetting.
(Note my tach is not working, so revs are estimates by ear)
It went like this....
#98 - Bike barely ran, poor everything.
#100 - Pretty good at the bottom end, would rev above about 6k.
#106 - Strong pull up to about 8-10k then stumbles and would not reach redline.
#108 - Pulls strong from 2k to redline, great idle, no choke needed for start.

My kit has nothing higher than the #108, but everything feels very good right now. I am going to ride it for a while and see if I notice any issues. If I do I will work with the needles at this point and leave the jets alone for now.

I had Evan Steel Performance (ESP) in Tucson do all this work and provide the materials. Carb tuning is an art that I have found that I do not possess.
They tuned the bike using their dynomometer and the horsepower increased from 24.5 at about 10,500 to 29.2 at 12,500. These figures were reflected in the bikes improved performance on the street and a vast improvement in the low end drivability. I chose not to go to pod filters and so sacrificed some top end power for low end improvement. The stock 24.5hp is probably true, this machine was noticeably weaker than my 2007. The 29.2hp is in line with Yoshimura's predictions. The only downside is that the pipe is awfully loud. I would like to attach the dyno charts if I could work out how.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: The DA today was 5900'. Temps of 46'. I also drilled the slides with #70 drill bit as I want the best throttle response I could get as I road race and blip the throttle on downshifts. I did not sync the carbs yet but the bike idles well at 1500rpms and doesn't seem to drop after blipping the throttle. The bike starts right up but does need the choke at first. It also revs pretty clean in neutral with no load but seems to hit a little lag at around 8-10k but then revs again hard to redline. It's maybe a little lean but since most of the track days and race days the weather will be 70-95' so I think it will be fine. I still need to go for a ride to get a better feel and look at what is going on. The spark plugs are stock and are originals. Right now it revs way better than it did when it was bone stock. It the meanwhile I will get some new spark plugs, change the oil and sync the carbs.

Edit: 01/23/2012 - The weather finally cleared up enough to go for a ride and check the jetting. I changed the spark plugs and sync'd the carbs. In the driveway the bikes revs well through out the RPM spectrum and at WOT. Maybe a very very very tiny bit hesistant in the 5-8k range but almost not noticeable. Went for the ride and the temps were about 48' with no wind. When cruising around with less than half throttle the bike runs well and throttle response is excellent but when I start to go to WOT it revs fine from 2k up to 6k then it stumbles till around 8k then it revs fine all the way to redline just fine. Not sure if it is lean or fat.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: just under 2.75 turns out

ELEVATION: 1,066 ft (according to Wikipedia)

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: The bike rips at WOT on the 108 mains. The mid-range is very smooth, and pulls from all rpms/throttle openings without surging or hesitation. Very happy with this setup until my EFI kit gets here, then I won't have to worry about jetting anymore.

I also replaced all 16 screws that hold the caps and bowls with M4x16 hex head screws. No more stripped screws.

My bike pulls like a demon all the way through the powerband up to 140 km/h. I have not been able to test the redline in 6th gear because I'm afraid I'd get caught by highway patrol. With that being said, I still have a problem with my idle. When I blip the throttle it hangs a bit before returning back to the pre-set (by me) 1500 rpms.

Edit: I put sea foam in my tank and it cleared up all the issues. My bike runs really well now, but i have yet to figure out the fuel consumption. I may be running a tad rich.

update: Now 2 turns out. Tried one turn but it was not running well. Getting a solid pop when I chop the throttle, and some popping on low-throttle deceleration. Would like to get rid of that... but any more out on the screws and I get the symptoms of over-rich.

MAIN JET: Stock (Keihin #98)

Pulls very hard from 8k- to redline. When on the throttle its great but if, i let off the throttle then it feels not as responsive when i try to get back on it .
Debating if I should go to 110 dynojet or keep the 114 and change clip position
dynojet 114 seems really high compared to what some of you guys are running, I looked at the hole differences from the 105 stock Keihin and its almost triple.

MISCELLANEOUS: Went from dynojet to factory pro then back to dynojet. the factory pro was close but the top end lagged no matter what settings, idle and just off idle was terrible with the 40 pilot jet. I would go from 2 turns thru 2.5 and it would fluctuate and/or drop below the set RPM. the 42 is critical IMO.

My theory is the 40 is to much fuel over the air in the mixture, the 42 makes it a better blend at 1.5 turns out. all dirt bike tuners say if its over 2 turns you need to go up one on the pilot.

Tried diff mainjet sizes and diff A/F mixture. When warmed, 90 mainjet was best. I really couldnt notice a difference between 88 and 90 except with 88 i had to do 2.75 turns OUT on the A/F mixture screw. I just didnt like how my idle was, and rather than messing with the pilot went back to 90 mainjet.

I think with the switchover to LeoVince i will get at least 1.5 HP more. The AreaP doesnt seem strong enough.

Currently i am at 90 mainjet, 2 turns on A/F mixture screw.

I am going to try out another carb with Dynojet kit soon.

Then moved to 2nd clip and ran better but a tad to lean, had surging in mid range. Added a washer for half adjustment and runs great, surging gone. This is probably where the jetting will remain on my bike. After I get some more seat time I may tweak more.

installed jet kit with 98 main with areap exhaust and stock intake and 2 washers above E clip, pulled good throughout the rpm range. Installed pod filters with stock runners and crankcase breather, started with a 104 main and stock pilot. Wouldn't start without choke when cold, low end was lean and pulled ok from 6k to 8k then leaned out till redline. Jumped straight to a 108 main and reset idle mixture screws 2 1/2 turns, low end still lean, idled erratically, slight pop on decel, after 8k pulled great. Installed 40 pilots and put one washer under E clip in third position. Still needs choke to start, idle is a little off, pulls pretty evenly from around 4k till redline. Synced carb, idles a little better but still off, can't seem to get it "dialed in" right.

took it to a dyno day to see where its at, 30.8 hp, seems pretty good, going to fiddle with the mixture screws to see if I can make the low end better, if not, it'll stay as it is.

Misc Information about Jetting setup:
Started first on pilot circuit. #40 Pilots ran way too rich, swapped back to stock 38. Tuned idle mixture by idle speed and sound. Throttle returns nicely after blip. Started with 108 main, switched to 105 main, and tried 102.5 main. 105 provided best feel to redline. Started with clip in 3rd position, ran decent, 3rd position with washer ran decent but rich 4th position overly rich. 2nd position with washer ran great. 2nd position mid range feel nice and crisp.

Engine would bog and stumble around 2-3K when taking off from stop. Changed float bowl fuel height from 17mm to 18mm, took care of low end stumble.

Bike pulls beautifully from 3k to redline. Plugs look good so far, going to keep this setup for now and check plugs again after tank of gas.

Only change I'm looking at making is possibly going back and adding a washer underneath the needles.

I've been reading up on the whole jet kit thing, and I would like to know if there is anyone in the Riverside/Temecula/Ontario part of CA, that could help me with a baseline to get started with. Once that exhaust comes in, I would like to fidget with it as little as possible. If there is someone close to my area, I can start with what they're running (with altitude and temp adjustments made) and made adjustments off of that.

An extra set of eyes might help too, once installation time comes. Dinner is on me! Well, actually it's up to the wife, cause I can't cook unless it's a peanut butter and jam sandwich.

Hi everyone, I'm having problem with mine, after pulling the throttle, the RPM slowly goes down, is this something to do with the mixture? After installation of the kit, the mechanic sync the carbs, but I don't know if he played with the mixture screw. The mechanic did not removed the snorkel too. Please help me, the bike is stock on the garage because of the RPM slowly pulls down whenever you rev the throttle. Thanks in advance.

By the way I used the 98 sportisi main jet and the 38 stock pilot jet, I did do the second from top clip needle then washer then clip then washer thing in the needle.

Felt rich at WOT, so so at 1/2 throttle, 1/8-1/4 felt decent. Lots of decel popping/backfiring. Threw in 118 main as they were all i had, just to see what they did. Was definitely rich at WOT at high RPM, mid range felt decent, at 1/2 throttle and mid range felt pretty good as well.
Tore exhaust back off and sealed every joint (no more decel popping backfire) Threw in 112 main's WOT felt better at high rpm, mid rpm felt poor. With choke on and 1/2 throttle mid range felt better. Must be lean.

Shimmed to 5 washers, 110 main jets and the bike feels completely different so much improved through out the rev range.

Might try the 108 main jets to see if they are better or worse, only way to find out.

So curiosity got the best of me and i sprung for the Factory Pro stage 3 kit for the needles.

Did not ask anyone but was hoping it would come with 108 main jets.... it did not. 110-115's and a 40 pilot.

So my current set up with stock needles 5 washers, 40 pilot, 110 mains the bike runs good 1/4th throttle to redline, rich at 1/8th-1/4th throttle.

I was gonna go back to the 38 stock but instead put in the factory pro needles today and kept jets the same. I guessed on the clip settings based on my stock needle shims and comparing the two different needles.

Figured i would just share some pictures of the two needles side by side.

So FP needle on the top and the stock needle on the bottom. In the full needle shot it is easy to see how long the FP needle is compared to the stock needle. Even with the factory having the clips in the #4 position.

Bike feels amazing from 5k-redline, throttle is still snappy in the mid range. It's now possible to do small wheelies : ) considering i have a 15T front sprocket that's a good feat. There is no hesitations or bogging, misses half throttle to wide open. Motor sounds way better with all the intake noise, a little to loud at times. The only issues I'm having Is the low end idle 1/4 throttle. It's having a hard time holding a consistent idle have to re adjust after the bike is warmed up. I've Messed with the screws from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 and it still feels sluggish to take off. It's like it's trying to catch up, and hesitates to go. Once it hits 4.5k it just goes and comes alive to redline. Also when it's cold if I apply the choke, Idle drops way low and engine cuts off, unless you blip the throttle. I might turn the screws out more, which usually means I need a bigger pilot... I will also try and add another washer see if that helps any.. But for now I have to ease into the throttle or just rev it to 2.5-3k and take off..

I think you have it backwards, But then again so could I.

Turning the screws out means more air, you need more air because you already have to much fuel (rich). 3.5 turns out is a good bit, are you running the stock pilot or #40? if you have the 40 in I would go back down to the stock #38. if you still have the #38 then I would make sure the needles are seated correctly and everything else is good, vac lines, slides, diaphragm's ect... if that all checks out, give a lower pilot a shot.

Other reasons I think your idle circuit is rich is you say choke kills it. Choke gives more fuel, since you are already rich the choke makes it even more rich and poof it stalls.
other hint, you say if you blip throttle it doesn't stall. By twisting the throttle you are engaging main jet circuit which in the 1/4-1/2 throttle range is controlled by the needle. Therefore getting out of the idle circuit which is to rich and causing the stall.

KrazyWalle

I fixed it, turn the screws in till the engine almost cuts out, then back out too set idle. I did this on both and sync the carbs, problem fixed. I guess I was way to rich... And I have the stock 38s in it. Plus there was also a small vacuum hose disconnected. I didn't realize this till about a hour in of trying to sync the carbs. No wonder it kept fluctuating..

The idle mixture screws on the Ninja's carbs are fuel-bleeds, so turning them OUT will let more fuel flow and make it RICH. The opposite is true if the idle mixture screws are air-bleeds (like most Honda dirt bikes).

Yes - if you add choke and it runs worse, you are already rich.

Generally, adjusting the idle mixture screw to get the highest idle speed is a good start. There are times when you will want to go slightly richer on that adjustment to help get a smoother transition to the needle.

JET KIT OR STOCK? Kelhin jets, FP needles

BRAND OF JET KIT? bought jets from jetsrus

MAIN JET: Kelhin 108

Pilot Jet: #40

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: Factory Pro needles, clip in #3 position with 1 of their shims underneath

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: haven't messed with yet
ELEVATION: 0-3000 feet

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: BRT-Tis programmable, timing advanced over majority of range compared to stock. Bike runs good through all throttle positions. Runs best at WOT from 9k-12krpms Bike feels lean at 1/4 -1/2 throttle positions all through lower rev range. will shim needles soon.

Bike feels good up top with the 108 at WOT, I feel the power drops off more than with the 110 mains past 12k rpms which kind of makes sense, but I feel like the bike spins up quicker from 9k to 12k. Will run the 108 for a while before I make a final decision. After I shim the needles the bike will probably feel a good bit better everywhere.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:
Idles well, takes throttle well from idle, pulls well to redline. Plugs show a little lean mixture. What kind of top speed should I expect from this setup?

Edit: Changed clip to 4th position. Got rid of some surging around 10k.
Tops out at 95 Indicated.

Dropped the main jet from 112 to 110 and adjusted screws out. Honestly the bike ran fine and plugs were not terrible but bike was rich and needed to choke to start, dropped the main and adjusted the screws, not perfect but better.

Put about 5000 miles on the bike with 112s, avg mileage was 55 mpg with a 15T front, will report back.

Pulls hard to redline, middle range is great, no choke needed at all to start, but hard to control low end. If I just crack the throttle it pulls too hard, Sparks plugs are black, If I apply choke the bike stalls, I smell gas from the exhaust, Fuel mileage is bad news. Bike is running too rich. Tried adjusting mixture screws, Valves adjustment, carb sync, cleaned carbs. Will trying adjusting needles to 2 clip position from top to make it less rich to see if it fixes my low end,not make my spark plugs black, and fix fuel mileage.

I previously posted my plugs were black and the low end was hard to control.

There were errors in my post, my mechanic friend looked at the plugs and there were ok, I was not looking at them right. My low end was way too touchy. I just crack the throttle just a hair and I could cruise around the city, but if I moved it back a hair, I would lose power. Very hard to control. Middle range and Top end pull hard and was EXCITING!!!!

I moved the clip to the 2nd spot from the top, below is my current results and other notes.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: Tried 2.5 to 3.0

ELEVATION: Toronto, Ontario 246FT 75 Metres to 686 FT 209 Metres

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

Currently using 2nd clip from top.

Top End: Pull better than stock not as good when the clip was on the 3rd position.

Middle Range:
Pull better than stock not as good when the clip was on the 3rd position.
Stumbles at 9000 RPM, I did not have this problem when it was on the 3rd position.

Low End:
Easier to control, better than stock, easy to ride in town, not as fun as before when I had it in the 3rd position.

Misc Notes:
I no longer have the strong smell of gas from the exhaust when it idles, or people smell gas behind me. My idle drifts from 1000-1200 no matter what I do, I had this idle drift before I re-jetted. I'm going to clean my carb, and try choneofakind advice. I am not going to place the clip in the third position like before, I going to add washer to try to make in 2 1/2 position. I will let you guys know if it helps.

Cheers!!!

WARNING I have be jetting in cold weather, so my results are not meant for spring/summer temperatures.
When it gets warmer, I'll update with new results.

INTAKE MODIFICATIONS: Kleen air delete. Uni filter Dual Foam 6 inch UP6200ST with PVC pipe as intake runner. The Pod filters are about 1 inch away from the battery box. I wanted to make sure the back of the pod filter airflow was not blocked by the battery box. The bracket back/under the gas tank with the four bolts, I had to grind down, because it had tabs for the old airbox, and was pinching my 6 inch pod filters

MAIN JET:
DJ112/Keihin 117.5 for Cold Weather. -5/25F to 10C/50F (richer and stronger smell of gas when ambient temperature is warmer 10C/50F)

PILOT JET: Stock #38

NEEDLE AND CLIP POSITION: DJ needles with clips at the Forth position (What Dynojet recommends), Tried Fifth Position, bike was spitting fuel out of the bottom exhaust drain hole and strong smell of gas at 3000-4500 rpm parked when I revved it.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 2.25 turns out.

ELEVATION: 75-646 feet.

Temperature: -5/25F to 10C/50F

MISCELLANESOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:
Installed block off plate, Removed Air injection into exhaust to get rid of backfiring.

I initially had DJ108/Keihin 112 jets installed, but the Ninja 250R refused to go past 11000 RPM in 2nd gear with WOT. Temperature was around 4C

Installed DJ112/Keihin 117 bike pulls hard, I would like to have tried DJ110/Keihin115's, but it did not come with my Dynojet kit.

I ordered some Keihin 115's jets, and will test them when it gets warmer + 10C

Earlier I was getting tons of white exhaust smoke even after the bike was fully warmed up, but it went away. I think it was the new Uni Pod filters, I freshly oiled them and maybe some of the oil got sucked it.

Made intake runners (PVC Pipe) connected to the carbs with a rubber plumping coupler, but notice the top of the intake carb holes were being covered. I ended making the pvc pipe very short (1.5 inches) to not block it.

Because of the longer air pods, and intake runners, I had to relocate the starter relay/fuse under the battery box.

Small throttle openings 1/8 to close makes the bike jerky. I still need to balance my carb, and may try a #40 Pilot jet.

Bike seems to using a lot more gas.

I love the extra power.

UPDATE DJ114/Keihin 120 Weather has gone crazy and it dropped to 4C/39F, feels like it's the fall season.
Removed intake runners, and 2nd layer of Uni Pod UP6200ST. The 2nd layer makes it hard to put the filter on the carb.
Bike revs better, feels a lot stronger 4/5/6. Was a blast to ride going WOT on the highway.
With removal of intake runners, low end, and mid range torque is weaker, have to give it a tiny bit more throttle to get it moving. Overall, having intake runners is NOT worth it.
Decelerating/brakes no exhaust gurgling or strong smell of gas.

UPDATE 15C/59F to 27C/77F
Change my jets 2 size smaller from DJ114/Keihin 120 to DJ110/Keihin 115 NO Intake runner.
Bike feels good, Did not have to adjust my mixture screws or play with the needles.
Decelerating/brakes on city streets I can hear a bit of exhaust gurgling but no smell of gas. Since I was only using 1/4 to close throttle. Thought about trying 1 jet size more DJ112/Keihin 117 to see if it helps, but summer is coming soon and it'll act rich, so sticking to DJ110/Keihin 115. Will see if the Bike improves or get worse when it gets warmer.
Getting new plugs next week, will test again.

UPDATE 20C/68F to 32C/90F
DJ110/Keihin 115
DJ needle clip in the middle (3rd) was at 3 1/3
Place back intake runners to get back some low end power, better for city riding, a little bit slower to rev at WOT
Installed new NGK CR8EIX spark plugs NO DIFFERENCE.

UPDATE
Tested Bike at night. Bike Fully warmed up, Went on highway and did WOT to 11000-13000RPM coolant blinks on for a split second. Tried 3rd and 4th Gear, same issue. This tells me main jet is too small.
Will installing next bigger Main Jet to see if the issue goes away. I didn't noticed this before because, I usually ride in the day, and in the city. Not going fast enough, and can't see the coolant light blink.
Bike runs fine, just worried.
20C/68F
DJ110/Keihin 115
DJ needle clip in the middle (3rd)
#40 Pilot
MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS 1.75 turns out.

UPDATE
Pulled Spark plugs. White, Too lean!
20C/68F
Change Jet to DJ114/Keihin 120.
Coolant light no longer flashes when going WOT 11000-13000RPM, when I try to get up to speed on the highway or just doing WOT runs.
DJ needle clip in the middle (3rd)
#40 Pilot
MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS 1.50 turns out.
Low end close to 1/8 thottle is a bit lean because (Idle hangs when blipping) I reset the mixture screws to 1.5 turns by mistake. I had them at 1.75 turns. Going to have to adjust (Open) them when I get the chance.
Did NOT pull plugs out after my run. Was late and tired.

UPDATE
30C/86F
Uni filter Dual Foam 6 inch UP6200ST (Do NOT have 2nd layer installed)
Have intake runners to get back some low end power, better for city riding, a little bit slower to rev at WOT
Main Jet: DJ114/Keihin 120.
DJ needle clip in the middle (3rd)
#40 Pilot
MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS 1.75 Turns
Low end a tiny rich. Close to 1/8 throttle Idle drops when blipping it's rich. The weather is really hot, so expecting it to do that.
Middle Range Performs awesome
WOT works fine, no coolant/Engine light overheat on/flash. Wondering if installing a DJ116/Keihin 122.5 Main jet would make any performance gains? Might try it.
Still need to pull out Spark plugs to inspect to see if the DJ114/Keihin 120 main jet are running right.

UPDATE
24C/75F
Installed Dynojet springs.
WOT, Red Line, acceleration is quicker on highway.
City riding not so good. When Rolling off throttle, bike seems takes longer to drop RPMS when slowing down. Have to brake eariler. The Dynojet springs are weaker than stock, which makes the Carb sliders slower to go down. Will try for a while to see if my riding improves. If not, I will put stock springs back in.

ELEVATION: 200-800 feet.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: All Stock air box equipment removed. 6Sigma recommended 112.5 jets with two washers under the needles and an auxiliary hole drilled in the vacuum valve (#35) I think? Tiny drill bit that was included with kit. Anyway, the bike felt fat/rich and didn't start making great power until 10K (this is a track bike BTW). It had no mid-range, so I jetted down to 110's, removed a washer from the needles and cut one coil off the vacuum valve spring (also supposed to improve throttle response). It's a whole new bike...throttle response is crisp, wheelies in second and third gear, and takes off like a rocket when she hits 7K. Power is on through the whole rev range.

Today after work I installed the 107.5 mains only to find that my entire top end sputtered to the redline. Once I re-installed the 102.5 mains and rode her around enough she went back to normal. The pilot jets were perfect and overall the idle is spot on (1500rpm), there is more power in the mid-range and top end, and throttle response has improved.

Further tuning to possibly include: Kleen Air Delete, shimming needles further, drilling the carb slides, clipping the carbs springs, maybe a wideband 02 if I feel froggy enough.

misc : installed a stock ninja 300 engine into 250 chassis. 250 carbs , flywheel ,and ignition case. sprockets 14/41 . jetting is a bit rich, going to jet closer after I pick which muffler will be used. Might try #42 pilot. fitting different mufflers .ninja 300 muffler is nice and quite, runs (?)good. A jardine Yamaha fj 600 slip on kinda loud runs better. have a knock off ?? 12" can oval can on the way.

First off I just wanted to say this site is amazing and thank you for everyone's input. I have a 09 250r and have been riding about 3 years and always went into this site for tips and only recently, finally signed up.

MIXTURE SCREW SETTINGS: 3 3/4 turns out from bottom

ELEVATION: sea level to 370 m/1214 ft.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP:

Ran stock jets with full system and BMC air filters for about a week while waiting for my dyno jet and was already getting backfires and gunshots almost every decel (geared decel, and clutch in decel). when the jet kit came in i removed the air box and installed the k&n 0990 filter and kleen air system and instead of going to the 110 4th pos (kit didn't come with it) i opted for the 112 (it was either 108 or 112) but put it on pos 3 instead compensate for it being a jet higher. seems to have a really good effect, it has a constant pull all the way to red line at 6th gear with a 16 sprocket. seems to have eliminated the decel backfire and gunshots considerably. no choke needed at all. the only backfires i get are few and far between and very quiet (one much louder rarely), only during geared decel between 7-11k rpm (if i hit the clutch and let it decel without being in a gear it's completely fine with no back firing). this also only hapens when im riding it hard and for a long period, im thinking it might be running rich and the sound im hearing is afterfire. anyone having the same problem or am i still running lean and should add a washer/go a pin pos up??

also what is the difference in sound of rich vs lean?

Richer sounds a bit like a moist/wet fart.

My friend had the same problem with a full exhaust. It ran great and his power was smooth. Raising the needle 1 more notch made it ran poor. He ended under raising the needle with a washer. So it was higher but not as high as adjusting it with the clip.

He's running a #40 Pilot Jet
Main Jet is Dyno Jet 115??
Exhaust is Full but don't remember which one.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR BIKE’S JETTING SETUP: Highly recommend the Factory Pro kit over the dynojet kit. Hardest part of tuning these carbs is deleting the airbox.

Using stock air runners on the carbs shoved into the R-0990 K&N airfilter.

Overtighten the drain bolts on the Carb bowls.

Running 18T/57T sprockets with 134 chain length from Spears Racing Enterprises.

Bike pulls now. I was running Slip-on only with zero other mods, and bike not only felt like it lost a chunk of its midrange and top end, but, it popped and crackled every decel. Running bike, erring on the rich side now, has virtually no back firing any more.

updates airbox removed, k/n pod filter, stick coils added, new plugs gapped to .030(nippondenso iridiums)pods-with stock airbox runners(v stacks coming)
factory pro jet started with 110’s
clip 3rd from top
40 pilot jets
not pulling cleaning on top end starts around 10,500
tried 112’s and 115’s same effect.
did valve check and reset floats to 15.5 mm
(had to reshim a couple of exhaust valves)
put 110’s and retried. ran better on top end but still struggling. this is where i disagree with factory pro on setting mains first.
put needles to notch 4 and leaned out pilot circuit.
ran cleanly to 13000, slight hesitation but nothing like it was. i did not realize the needle circuit has significant overlap. will button it up and ride to check fuel mileage and drivability.

slight hesitation @11-13 will try 112 mains.
ran much better with 112's pull clean and hard. had to readjust pilots after 112 installation.

another update. tried 38 pilots. started at 3 ended up into the 4's. i put back in the 40's and went down to to 110 on the mains.

maverick9611

the bike likes 40’s much better. still running position 4 on needles and back on 110’s. very crisp on top end. now that i tune realizing power curve drops off around 12,000. lowered shift points to 10,500 to 11,000.

maverick9611

108's working great. factory pro should include this jet size in their kit. still slight hesitation on top. closed gap on plugs.
needles still on notch 4 with 40 pilots on the bottom, throttle response much better after drilling hole on slide. will be switching to uni 6" pods hooking straight to carbs. been using k/n hooked to airbox manifold to improve low end.
more to come...

been working closely with member dannoxyz on figuring out the exploited ninja's stumbling on top end. frankly it wouldn't pull hard after 11k. naturally i blamed everything else first. i even closed gap on plugs after i had opened them up after stick coil mod.problem is dyno jet and factory pro are giving jet kits that are quite rich. factory pro gives 110,112,115 mains.(tried them all) these are are way to big! to make maximum power, lean mains need to be installed!with danno’s as a guide, the exploited ninja with uni 6”pods is now skirting near stock main jets! i’ve tried 108’s, (moved to notch 3 on needles)102’s,100’s and now heading towards 98’s. keep in mind elevation will factor in too. augusta, ga is 132’ above sea level. exploited finally started to come alive at 102's. 100 mains was even better. it pulled extremely hard on the top end. 98's going in today. 98 mains with pods?wtf? ya i'm freakin but dannoxyz always seems to explain in laymans terms. more to come:cool:

maverick9611

fell on its face with 98's. going back up to 100's.
mains are set. going back to clip 4 on needles.

Due to different diameters, lengths and taper of needles, it may be helpful to measure actual dimensions of various ones on market. Then we can come up with an equivalence table. Such as 1-washer factory = 2nd clip position DynoJet = 3rd clip position Factory Pro, etc.

maverick9611
May 27th, 2018, 03:48 PM
still busting up 9-11000.
needles are on groove 4.
shimmed 1 washer, slight change but mid-range to main transition very erratic.
shimmed again total 2 washers. slight change but same mid range stumbling.
dannoxyz recommends trying stock needles to with 2 or 3 shims.
more to come. the profile on factory pro needles is obviously not working. now the big question. it just can't be me, has anybody else had these issues?

maverick9611
May 31st, 2018, 04:32 AM
tried 3 washers stock needles. midrange transition to main still not smooth. dannoxyz recommendation is try 1 washer.
1 washer tried. super lean, almost unrideable.
after more consulting we agreed to try 5 washers.
the exploited ninja finally has a decent set up. mids to mains all smoothed out.
still tuning on 40’s, might go back to 38’s.
yes you heard it 100 mains on a pod bike!
stock needles with 5 washers
pilots almost there. been running bout 40 mpg. will update soon

the stock needles were never designed to be shimmed like other needles work with clips. It obviously can be done to help find the sweet spot but once you get over 3 shims the needles do not work well throughout the throttle range.

FP vs stock needles

https://www.ninjette.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=25066&d=1370212740

So you are running pods, are to directly on the carbs or using the intake boot?

You still have the stock pipe and a slip on, that might explain why you are down so low on the main. Assume you have the clean air system removed with block off plate as well.

My bike with pods, full race exhaust ran super well through the throttle range with the FP needles and 108 mains. Your temps seem pretty high compared to what i experience but you are down near sea level so shouldn't be that crazy different.

With that being said, it might not be that strange to be down to 100 mains. It's hard to give advice without riding the bike but you need to be jetting based on how the bike feels at specific throttle positions, obviously there is some cross over between the circuits but there are also several other things that effect the complete jetting of a carb other than just the needle, needle position and slow and main jets. For whatever reason maybe the FP needle is just not working for you, unfortunately there is not a huge data base of needles to tell you where to go from the FP needle as that is what it is and how they make money.

With dirt bikes it is much easier to buy and try different needles, literally a chart of 40+ different needles and what they effect and how.

My advice is put the needle in a neutral position and figure out the WOT jetting. Don't touch the needle until you find a main jet that pulls the entire rev range at WOT. Don't expect a super linear pull (for a ninja250 anyway) the power should drop off a bit past 10k rpm Once you figure out the main, start working on your half throttle position and the transition to WOT.

At this point your main will at least be in a reasonable range, and it might go up or down 1 size as you adjust the needle leaner or richer as needed. change one thing at a time, it sucks but that is the best way to go about it.

If you can't get something that feels good everywhere you need a different needle or there is something going on with the engine, intake and or exhaust

We go the top-end dialed in with 100 mains first. Up & down on either side wasn't as good. So that's done and locked in.

Problem with longer FP needles was it wasn't getting fully on the mains soon enough, caused stumbling in 9-11k range. Using shorter stock needles got on full mains sooner and took care of that little stumble.

Now the bottom-end's too rich, gotta work on pilot-screws or even change back to 38s.

I still suspect there may be other issues too. Suggested he swap complete bone-stock carbs over from green bike that's working flawlessly perfect.

Might even send my wideband with on-board datalogging memory to really sniff out problem. Gotta build up harness for quick install on bike instead of auto.

unfortunately when i tested i did not ride in cruise mod 70 mph@9000 rpm.
bike still feels like it’s stumbling or starving. very subtle but noticeable. when i switch to mains disappears. will keep trying.

I have 127's in mine, still a little rich on the top end. May mess with the air bleeds😂😂😂

maverick9611
July 7th, 2018, 05:19 AM
i set aside a full day and did several carb removals float adjust and jets/needles. i couldn’t make the 100’s work, even, 102’s, transition between mid and mains was affected. i had floats set at 15mm so i know i wasn’t running out of gas. i had fp needles at max/groove 5. i put the 108’s in and everything started working. its still not perfect near redline but transition is much better and cruise mod is perfect. 38 pilots at 3 turns out. i have some 105’s they i will try also.

*Dynojet instructions for Stage 1 with K&N drop I filter with stock airbox and high flow slip ons calls for needle clip postion 4.

I found that I had slight lean surges while cruising in 5/6 gear at 1/2-3/4 throttle. 5th clip postion cured that surge and the bike came alive and is extremely fast now for a pregen.

Rips all the way to redline, instant throttle response, and engine is smooth as glass cruising.

Awesome report, thanks for details!!! :)
Hi, which DynoJet kit# are you using?
Do you have photo of needle used?

Interesting that you're only one beside me, that have found higher-power and more responsive engine from downsizing main-jets. I suspect we're one of few that have factory-fresh clean-carbs and aren't making up for clogged dirty carbs by increasing jet size.

Dynojet - JET KIT FOR 1988-2007 KAWASAKI NINJA 250R
SKU#2138 - 2138.002 U.S Models Only

My carb is factory fresh for sure. Ultrasonic cleaning, air and lots of wire does the trick.

No photos of the needles but I'll update my entry with a photo next time I have them out. I can say they are well thought and that's what you are paying for in a Dynojet kit.

I think many people during their jetting pilgrimage, keep stepping up their jets rather than balancing and fine tuning the range. "More fuel more speed mentality", without thinking that the engine's best performance is found when all the fuel can be burned the fastest, more is not always better in this case. At WOT fuel is being taken from all the jets to some degree.

From pregen Dynojet instructions:

https://www.dynojet.com/amfile/file/download/file/648/product/3287/

1988-2007 Kawasaki EX250F
Stage 1&3

STAGE 1
For mildly tuned machines using the stock airbox, with stock or K&N filter #N/A

STAGE 3
For mildly tuned machines using individual filters or velocity stacks. K&N filters #RC-1822 Both stages may be used with a good aftermarket xhaust

If you are running an aftermarket exhaust or slip-ons with high
flowing baffles use the DJ098 main jets. Be sure that the jet you are changing is the main jet.

I followed stage 1 instructions because of the high flow Cobra slip ons and KN drop in air filter with air box intact.

*Only changes I made was lowering the needle to 5th postion and 3 turns out rather than the 2.5 out that the instructions asked for.

I'll try going back to 2.5 at some point to see how that affects things but for now it's running great. Or maybe go up to a 38 flow jet from the factory 35.

Idk at this point I'm chasing inches of performance rather than miles. And the bike is lighting fast compared to stock. My GF also rides a 07 pregen all stock and because of our weight different I could never catch her from stops or on hills. Now I find myself overtaking her and having to get off the throttle. Hills are also great now, no more down shifting to keep up, just roll on the throttle and blast up the hill without bogging.

Knowing myself I'll chase those inches :)
