Edwards will not return until Catalunya MotoGP; doctors advise extended recuperation time due to number of previous fractures on same collarbone (http://www.sportrider.com/news/146_12050_vermeulen_to_sub_for_edwards_at_le_mans_motogp/index.html)Colin Edwards underwent successful surgery on Monday to repair his fractured collarbone suffered in a qualifying incident at Estoril, but the surgeon who performed the operation—Dr. Javier Mir of the Insitituto Universitario DEXEUS in Barcelona, Spain, the same surgeon who repaired Edwards’ collarbone last year after a crash in Catalunya—told the Texan that the recuperation period will be much longer due to fact that Edwards has already fractured that same collarbone four times already. Thus, the Forward NGM Racing team has decided that Australian Chris Vermeulen will substitute for Edwards on the Suter/BMW CRT machine at the upcoming French MotoGP event at Le Mans.

Le Mans was actually the site of Vermeulen’s single MotoGP victory when he rode the Rizla Suzuki to the win in 2007 in wet conditions. The Australian had most recently raced in the World Superbike Championship in 2010 for Kawasaki, but a knee injury sustained in the second race at the season-opener at Phillip Island was aggravated in another crash at Brno. Vermeulen then had to undergo complete reconstructive surgery on the knee, and the extended rehabilitation time required forced him to leave the WSBK series.

“First of all I would like to wish Colin a speedy recovery,” said Vermeulen in a team release. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to race back in MotoGP with the NGM Mobile Forward Racing team. I am looking forward to my first time on the bike being at Le Mans, a circuit that holds great memories for me including a victory in 2007. I am excited to be racing at the top level of motorcycling again and look forward to working with the team.”

The fracture of Edwards’ collarbone was bad enough that it required a titanium plate with 10 screws. He’ll make his return to racing at the Catalunya MotoGP on June 1-3.
