Dumb question but I have to ask. I downloaded the pdf of the maintenance schedule and I am not sure how to read it. If it has an X, that particular maintenance has to be done. Or we skip that one with an X. Thanks! I am a newbie rider.

You know what I just noticed! It says to check your tire pressure once a year or every 7500 miles WTF? I check mine everytime I ride almost. I definately check it atleast once a month whether or not I have ridden it.

I have them for my car and they work well. I would get a 28psi stem cap for the front and a 32 cap for the back tire. I would still check my tires but at least these caps will give you a quick visual indicator if for any reason one of the tires becomes dangerously low.

Also regarding maintenance, my bike is now 2 years old so according to the schedule I have to lubricate the steering stem bearings, replace the air filter and flush/change both the front and rear brake fluids. Obviously replacing the air filter is simple but I'm not too confident on changing the brake fluid myself, although I could probably do it. How many of you have lubricated the steering stem bearings and changed the brake fluids according to the 2 year interval? I definitely would not feel comfortable taking apart the steering myself in order to lubricate it.

When you buy the bike, you can generally haggle and get them to give you a voucher for a free first service. If you have the bike already, it's around £120 to £150 first service.

This may be a very stupid question, but when it says which ever comes first. That doesnt mean every 600 You do an oil change, it means at 600, then 4000. right?

Right - but the schedule doesn't even require an oil change at 4k, it's at 7.5k. (though most change it at 4k anyway). The pdf in this thread has an X in the 4k area for oil change, but if you review the owners manual or service manual, the interval goes right from 600 miles to 7500 miles.

I have a '10 Ninja at 5000KM - I am not handy in any way. Are there services to take it into at the dealer? Like service 1, service 2 etc?

Just download the Maintenance Schedule from the top post. Then convert from miles to km. 4000 miles which is about 6500km and 7500 miles is about 12000km. Just check the list what needs to be done at that time. You can take it to the dealer and they will know what to do base on the mileage or if you want you can check the DIY section and do it yourself. And if you get stuck theirs a lot of knowledgeable folks on this forum that you can ask for help.

I hear ya. I downloaded it but literally don't know one thing about bikes so it's all gibberish to me. Since I only have 5K on the bike I guess I'll just take it for a "tune-up" to a dealer at 12K and change my oil myself every year.

ok thanks for the help, now i have another question. my chain is super dry and every time i change gear there a there a loud tick sound so for me that mean i need an oil change yes or no???

Clean and lubricate your chain.

If you changed your oil 3 months ago, don't worry about it for a while. If it's been a couple of years (or 10,000 km), change your oil.

A lot of people think that's too long an interval. While modern manufacturing and oil technology mean that engines can go a lot longer between oil changes, our bikes also share the oil with the transmission. The transmission gears simply chew up the oil a lot faster than in a plain engine, causing the viscosity of the oil to drop quickly. In one test (http://www.ducatimeccanica.com/oil.html), a Sabre's oil lost 3.9x as much viscosity in 42% of the time, compared to the same oil in an Accord. After only 1500 miles, the bike's 40 weight oil had degraded to 27 weight.

The best thing to do is actually have your oil tested (http://www.blackstone-labs.com/). We can assume oil will degrade in similar ways under similar circumstances, but testing what your specific bike is doing will always be the best way to know its condition. A few tests at different timespans will give you an idea of how the oil is holding up, so you know when it needs to be changed. Once you get that figured out, you can just do occasional tests to verify that things are still going according to plan without having to worry about testing it every single time.

Personally, I figure the cost of an extra oil change or two each year is cheap insurance to avoid subjecting my engine and transmission to unnecessary stress. The 250 holds even less oil than my 500, so there's that much less to shoulder all the wear too.

thanks InvisiBill also the petrol i use here in bali is only 80% ethanol or some thing like that ( and that our high grade petrol) so im think oil change every 3 month is not so bad, or dose the petrole have no effect on the oil
