View Full Version : Everyone use the "welcome" screen?

Does everyone use the "welcome" screen located on the top right hand of the page when you log in?

I find it an excellent way to see what topics or threads have been added since my last visit. If you don't use it, I highly recommend you do as it's a great feature to keep you informed on what's happened since the last time you logged on.

Alex, I know this may not be correct forum for a site related item, but my main goal is to help all the forum members perhaps stay in touch a bit better with each other if they are not aware of this great feature. Please consider leaving it here as this is the most trafficked of all the forums. :)

I find it very useful! I do like seeing how many unread posts there are, and it's nice to be able to bring all the threads with unread posts up just by clicking that "unread posts" link. Someone who registers on the site today may have a couple thousand unread posts, so I added that link right in that same box to mark all posts as read right away, if they choose. Posts that someone hasn't seen only stay unread for 30 days; after 30 days every post is considered "read".

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=10&pictureid=47

Also, when that list of threads with unread posts come up, that green arrow to the left of each thread title is a direct link to where you last were in that thread; it will take you to your first unread post:

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=10&pictureid=48

With most browsers you can right click on that arrow, and open it up in a new tab. What I typically do is quickly open up every unread thread in a new tab each, then go to each tab to read 'em all...

I always use it to check for PM's and my Unread Posts.

First thing after I log in is hit the unread posts hyperlink... I say it is a great way to follow up on a previous thread of interest... Good idea:thumbup:

Great... I wasn't sure how many was aware of this feature. :)

On other boards that use the same forum format, this feature is not enabled and this is the first time I've seen it used. I find it a very useful, invaluable tool and wasn't sure how many others noticed it too.

Good job, Alex. The details here amaze me at times.

I was keeping up with all new posts at one time, but now that I have 1008 unread posts I dont really have the time to read them all. It is a great feature though.

I like the idea of this, but for some reason it takes about 20 seconds to load a page when I could just click and scroll down faster. I use firefox so maybe I could open them all in new tabs and forget about that delay. Good idea

If the number ever gets too high, there's no crime in just hitting the "mark all read" and starting from zero again. Any of the more active threads will pop back onto the list soon enough anyway.

It depends on what thread you're going into. If there are quite a few pictures in the thread, it may seem like it's taking awhile because it's loading every one of the pictures before it finishes putting you right at the first unread post. The same thing is actually happening if you just click the thread itself and scroll down yourself, it just doesn't seem as noticeable because the pics are coming in below while you are still scrolling.

One thing I've noticed about the unread posts number... it's about twice the number of the actual posts. Don't know why that is... Alex?

Alex
December 21st, 2008, 07:19 PM
I've never seen that. Are you sure you're not confusing threads and posts? You can have 10 unread posts show up on that counter, click on it, and have only 2 threads show up. That's because there may be 6 posts in one thread and 4 posts in the other thread that have been entered since you last visited either.

Yeah it used to read between none and maybe 20 unread posts. Then one day it was like WHAM 600-something. Everyday it goes up by about 50 or so.

:idunno: Didn't see anything weird on this end, and it seems to still be working OK. That's what it would look like if you hit the read hyperlink right below, any chance that's what happened? I guess I could try and move that link elsewhere, but if I move it too far away people might not know that the functionality is so related... You can also always use the "view new posts" pull-down menu, and view the new posts from the last day, 2 days, week, etc.; it doesn't matter if you've personally marked them read or not.

Vex -

I moved it one line away:

If that were the cause, this would make it less likely for the next time.

Figured it out.. see, Kelly's bike is taken apart to much to ride.
..and for Alex, well, he doesnt really even own a 250.

Availability to ride a 250 = less posts!

:rotflmao: That's my side of the argument! Whenever I'm talking about the ninjette with Ann I always say "your bike" and more often than not she calls it my bike due to the low amount of Annie-specific miles on it... :)

But you're right, it's officially my wife's bike.

You were right. I've been using this link lately and it's been working fine. I must must have been trying to load picture heavy threads before. Thanks!

I use it and love it. I'm on other forums that don't have the "view new posts" feature nor the check that takes you to where you left off inside a thread, and it really makes it difficult to keep up with new material. Features like these really make it easier to navigate particularly large threads. Alex, you rock! Anyone told you that lately?

Ally, if its a motorcycle forum, most do. All the ones I've been on have. It might say, Show New Posts, or something like that, but it should be there.

The "New Posts" feature is enabled on most vB boards. What's more custom here is the mod that shows the number of new posts to each user on the main forum screen, and if you hit the "View New Posts" pull-down menu, there are a number of options for timing to view posts that aren't typically available elsewhere.

But - like most folks in this thread, first thing I do when I get here is hit that "unread posts" link and try and work my way through them. When it gets > 1000, I know I'm in trouble :). Lately we've had some days with >600 posts per day, so the volume is such that we're all going to have to rely on Kelly to read all of 'em and let us know about the good ones.

One of the forums I frequent is gardenweb.com, and trust me, its forums (though hugely active) are dinosaurs. Hanging out there REALLY makes me appreciate the features here on Ninjette.org!
