View Full Version : Clip Ons... Who's Got em???
kkim January 1st, 2009, 04:24 PM I know there are some of you that have clip ons on your bikes. Care to share what you used and how they are mounted?? What works... what doesn't... how the bike feels after the change... etc, etc, etc. Details, man, details!:D
Any input provided would be appreciated. The information I've seen regarding this mod has been scattered and sometimes not too reliable. :)
grandmaster January 1st, 2009, 04:41 PM Good topic, I have been looking at these...
CRXTrek January 1st, 2009, 04:42 PM Cajun covered it very well on the 'Other Forum'
Post #16 Ladies and Gents i give you clpons

Parts
2007 Suzuki SV650s handlebars
Rod Bearings for shimming to fit forks
Barends purchased at CheapCycle.com
My thoughts
I haven't got them dialed in all the way yet.It got cold.
If you lean foward on a stock bike and grab the brake and clutch levers,
that is about how much more you will lean foward.
You will have more weight on your hands and my turn in feels much lighter.
Almost twichy. Might have been because tires cold or low inflation. I haven't checked it lately. I have only put about 75 miles on after changing them.
You will pinch your fingers on full lock turns
I'll update in the spring.
Broom January 1st, 2009, 09:40 PM i've got the vortex clipons on my bike. we had to drop the forks maybe an extra 1/2 inch to have enough fork leg sticking out above the triple tree for them to mount to. i've ridden it up and down the street and it feels pretty good. you can mount them under your triples as well, but i don't think you'd be able to clear body work without a lot of modification. even mounted on top might require a little trimming (at least it did on my hotbodies fairing).
i didn't ride the bike stock much, and i haven't been out on it much with the new parts either, so i can't give a lot of good feedback. i can say that the body positioning with the clipons and the woodcraft rearsets feel pretty good so far though.
(if this image is too big, let me know and i'll edit)

stroked59 January 3rd, 2009, 08:24 PM what is the need for the clipp on's....noob question:thumbup:
CRXTrek January 3rd, 2009, 10:26 PM For me it was the look, more like a sportbike, and getting
my head down behind screen more out of the wind. :D
Also if you crash and bend them them you can replace
just the bar for about $15. Except for the bars i have.
Which are one piece Suzuki SV650s stock bars.
Hand position view with both bars on at once
Broom January 3rd, 2009, 10:49 PM the main reason is body position. it puts you in a more aggressive stance for the track. they're also much better to crash. if you don't clamp it down too hard, it'll just move stuff when you crash instead of breaking or bending. CRX is right too, much easier and cheaper to replace a bent tube.
usually i'd say they're only needed for the track, but i think the stock bars on the 250 and 650 are kinda nerdy, so if it was me i'd put them on my street bike too if i had one.
stroked59 January 4th, 2009, 01:20 PM someone had mentioned that you might have to cut to for adjustment on the plastics, is that really needed and thanks for the info:D
VeX January 4th, 2009, 04:31 PM :mad2: Sometimes this laptop pisses me off when I go on a long tangent and then magically it 'clicks' on something and goes off to another URL  So AGAIN:
You shouldn't have to do any notching on the plastic cowling if you retain the factory master cylinder. Since the style master cylinder I'm using connects on the bottom it makes some contact with the clip-ons. Anywho:
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll294/VeX86BirD/Master%20Cylinder/Clip-Ons_installed.jpg
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll294/VeX86BirD/Master%20Cylinder/Clip_Ons_Installed-2.jpg
It's pretty! :heh:
As for my clearance issues:
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll294/VeX86BirD/Master%20Cylinder/Clip-Ons-Clearance.jpg
With this style clip-on (as opposed to the SV650 clip-ons) the bars are moved roughly 1" forward. This in turn makes the levers come close to the wind-screen on the extreme turns. This isn't so much of a problem unless you're trying to do something like the 'box' on an MSF course :p
That and in my case:
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll294/VeX86BirD/Master%20Cylinder/Master_Cylinder_Clearanced.jpg
With the banjo fitting mount on the bottom of the master cylinder I had to notch the black plastic cowling to clearance it. Sometime in the near future I'll contour some fiberglass around the hole and make it look like it's factory made
Since there's no way this style clip-on would mount underneath the top-triple tree mount I had to put it above. The damned thing is tall!
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll294/VeX86BirD/Master%20Cylinder/Clip-Ons-1.jpg
Albeit the fork tube is still maybe 1/4" down the clip-on, the clip-on overs 1-1/8" of the fork tube! It's really really sturdy on there. Overall I raised the fork tubes 1/2" + 10mm because it seemed like a good idea.
Initially I took it out and warmed up the tires a bit. The whole setting position is a lot more sport oriented! It felt a lot more natural going around turns and probably since I dropped the front the 5/8" it does turn faster. I went on the free-way and everything felt stable at 80mph (un-corrected it was like 86-87mph). I'm very pleased with the results! I'll wait a week or so before I start doing any twisty-action to get used to the set-up, but I anticipate it. In the meantime I'm waiting for my f'ing pads to come in, new grips and rubber expansion nuts so I can retain bar-ends.
Erin_S January 4th, 2009, 04:44 PM i've got the vortex clipons on my bike. we had to drop the forks maybe an extra 1/2 inch to have enough fork leg sticking out above the triple tree for them to mount to. i've ridden it up and down the street and it feels pretty good. you can mount them under your triples as well, but i don't think you'd be able to clear body work without a lot of modification. even mounted on top might require a little trimming (at least it did on my hotbodies fairing).
Perfect! I was coming in to ask if that would work, because I thought it would. Any specifc models of clipons that will/won't work?
What overall height difference from stock did you find worked best? I heard on another forum that 1.5" difference (lower front/raised rear) works best.
stroked59 January 4th, 2009, 05:38 PM "VEX" are the clip-ons you have installed the vortex? they appear to be diffrent from the SV650's you had postd on the other link kf:)
there was another thread that had a race bike with the clip-ons installed under the tree and i think he said WoodCraft was in the works for getting some made for our bike, correct me if i am wrong.
VeX January 4th, 2009, 05:59 PM These are the only pictures of my clip-ons I've posted. Mine are not the Vortex ones (That's Broom). By the looks of it the Vortex ones are a bit shorter in height then mine and would explain why mine don't fully grasp the fork tube.
There's a couple of people with the SV650 clip-ons and those can go underneath the top-triple tree clamp as they have an 'L' shaped design so the actual bars wind up level with the Vortex ones. Woodcrafts would be nice, but I'm sure they wouldn't be cheap :)
I think Richard was the one that said he was going to try out Woodcraft rearsets, but not the clip-ons. I could be wrong ;)
kkim January 4th, 2009, 06:38 PM Vex,
thanks for posting the pics. :)
you can lower the forks about 1" w/o problems and it will quicken the steering a bit w/o making the bike unstable on the highway. That's the amount mine was lowered with the front lowering kit I installed.
Broom January 4th, 2009, 07:14 PM i forgot to mention that another advantage to clipons is the ability to shift weight from front to rear or vise-versa. the lower you put your clipons the more weight you shift to the front.
kkim January 4th, 2009, 07:20 PM so, that would apply to rearsets as well? :)
Broom January 4th, 2009, 07:21 PM yup :D
kkim January 4th, 2009, 07:27 PM yup :D
VeX January 4th, 2009, 07:53 PM ^^^ Hahhah that's a great smiley. I didn't mind decreasing the trail (it quickens up steering to put it in easy phrasing), but I didn't want to sacrifice stability. That's why going down about 5/8" seemed kosher. Going down the full inch would fully expose the fork tubes for the clip-ons, but like I said they are TALL clip-ons. They are on there and aren't going anywhere and possibly affecting stability to make the clip-ons fully mount doesn't seem necessary.
kkim January 4th, 2009, 08:08 PM And I'm saying that when I lowered mine an inch, it didn't affect highway stability like I thought it would, too.
I'm not saying to lower yours, just don't not lower it because of anticipated straight line instability... it doesn't happen. :)
stroked59 January 4th, 2009, 08:47 PM i've seen so many pics i might have gotten them mixed up but i know for sure that "vex" has a miller welder in his left rear view
kkim January 4th, 2009, 08:50 PM welder is used to keep his bike together as it's been apart waaay too many times!!!
VeX January 4th, 2009, 09:06 PM Phew! I'm glad the welder was in the rear view mirror...

NJD022588 January 5th, 2009, 12:53 PM LOL! :happy10:
How much money do those Vortex clip-ons go for?
Broom January 5th, 2009, 12:56 PM looks like around $150
Erin_S January 5th, 2009, 02:33 PM So the only clipons that work are SV650 ones?
EDIT:
Looks like the sv650's I've found are 41mm, how'd you guys get yours to fit? Been searching ebay for 36mm models, came up with...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Motorcycle-Clip-On-Handlebars-Chrome-Set-New_W0QQitemZ350141017058QQihZ022QQcategoryZ35587QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZVi ewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247
What do you think?
NJD022588 January 6th, 2009, 12:23 AM So the only clipons that work are SV650 ones?
Nope, Broom has used Vortex clipons and Vex has used another brand. Vex, where did you get yours?
kkim January 6th, 2009, 12:26 AM I believe he got his clipons on Ebay... the same place he sold his hot water kettle.
NJD022588 January 6th, 2009, 12:34 AM ^^^ :D
VeX January 6th, 2009, 02:34 AM :evil6: I'm busted eh? :p

^^ That's where I got mine, although I'm thinking 37mm might work a little better as the tubes are really about 36.55mm in diameter.
Alex January 6th, 2009, 02:37 AM about 36.55mm in diameter.
I've never heard someone refer to anything as about 36.55mm. Sure it wasn't about 36.54 mm, or maybe about 36.56 mm? :D
Time for me to get to sleep for about 7 hours, 12 minutes, and 36 seconds. ;)
VeX January 6th, 2009, 02:40 AM Oh whoops! Sorry I meant 36.5mm. I got excited about hitting 'm' twice I must've hit the 5 twice as well :p
CRXTrek January 6th, 2009, 05:22 AM Vex....Did ya get some more riding in with the new setup ?
I can't wait for warmer temps. I'd ride layered up, but still
the tires won't grip for sh*t and there is snowmelt compound on all our roads
:(
VeX January 6th, 2009, 05:33 AM Nothing above and beyond the local back-roads. I think I might do some exploring later today?
Broom January 6th, 2009, 09:42 AM at least you guys have the chance to ride....
the offseason sucks when your bike is a track bike :(
CRXTrek January 25th, 2009, 01:30 PM Wood craft's are now available:D

Broom January 25th, 2009, 05:48 PM just body position
Ninja007 January 25th, 2009, 07:12 PM hey... buy your own! ;)
hey now, I'm plannin' on it! I've gotta buy my yoshi full exhaust before I buy the clip-ons. I have to save my money for these sorta of things, so one step at a time. So until then, it would be sweet to see the finished product, if you know what I mean. are you gonna buy them kkim? :D
might be a couple weeks before i can post up picts.
no problem man, whenever you can.
CRXTrek January 25th, 2009, 07:23 PM Just put these two pics together.....
kkim January 26th, 2009, 02:30 PM Okay, couldn't stand it... I rode a pregen yesterday with Woodcraft clipons and loved the positioning on that bike, so I just ordered a set.
should be here in a week.

well, well....looks like kkim might be able to provide some installation pics and other pics of the Woodcraft clip-ons? hehe! :D
VeX January 26th, 2009, 05:04 PM :D It took you long enough kkim :p
kkim January 26th, 2009, 05:32 PM Actually, I've been waiting for someone like Woodcraft to come out with a kit that would simply bolt on and have all the R&D finished up before I purchased. That I rode a bike literally yesterday with clipons and liked it and the fact that Woodcraft just recently developed the kit, this is early, really. Timing was perfect. :)
CRXTrek January 27th, 2009, 05:44 AM Good to see you're finally ditching your "Ape Hangers" :ride:
kkim January 27th, 2009, 01:37 PM bah... I saw nothing wrong with them. http://www.kawiforums.com/images/smilies/general/monkeyup.gif
stroked59 January 28th, 2009, 07:53 PM these clip ons are 08 spec or something else like the sv's
Broom January 28th, 2009, 08:28 PM not sure what your question is, but they are made specifically for the 08-09 250.
.... and mine came in the mail yesterday :D
we took then straight to the tuner who is setting up my suspension, so no picts.
kkim January 28th, 2009, 09:16 PM bah... mine is scheduled to be delivered on 03feb09.
Ninja007 January 28th, 2009, 10:15 PM bah... mine is scheduled to be delivered on 03feb09.
perhaps one of the only disadvantages to living in Hawaii...:D
NJD022588 January 29th, 2009, 04:55 PM Okay, couldn't stand it... I rode a pregen yesterday with Woodcraft clipons and loved the positioning on that bike, so I just ordered a set.

DIY write up? ;)
kkim January 29th, 2009, 08:15 PM if no one else does a DIY by the time I get around to installing mine, sure. :)
