Danilo Petrucci topped a treacherous first session of practice for the MotoGP class, though conditions were such that more than half the grid stayed in their garages, deciding that venturing out would be unproductive. The riders who did risk going out were mostly those needing the experience: Petrucci had his first chance to get used to the Suter BMW the team are now running, having dropped their homebrew steel trellis frame with an Aprilia engine. David Salom, replacing Ivan Silva at Avintia BQR, got acquainted with a MotoGP CRT bike, though what he really needs is experience with the tires, and the damp conditions were far from amenable to understanding the tires. And Nicky Hayden got a chance to see just how well his damaged hand was holding up, putting in 5 laps to test his fractured right metacarpal.

The weather is expected to improve as the day goes on, and the riders will hope to get some time on a properly dry track during FP2.
