So I'm probably going to be commuting in the rain this year, both voluntarily as well as not.

I usually ride about 50 miles a day roundtrip. Here are the items I was considering getting:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/14/67/903/29979/ITEM/AGV-Sport-Telluride-Touring-Gloves.aspx?WT.ac=Cart_Item

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/14/67/910/28896/ITEM/MotoCentric-Centrek-One-Piece-Rainsuit.aspx?WT.ac=Cart_Item

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/14/67/910/28890/ITEM/MotoCentric-Mototrek-Boot-Covers.aspx?WT.ac=Cart_Item

Do you guys have any opinions on my choices? Any info would be much appreciated.

Most tail bags should be waterproof right? I'll make sure to pick up a balaclava too.

The gloves don't have the best reviews. Get some gloves lined with Gore-tex if you are serious about riding in the rain.

spend $100 on a pair of waterproof helds. you wont regret it

I'm definitely not looking to spend anything even close to over $100.

Try this: Keeping the price point as low as possible, give me a few recommendations of waterproof gloves. Keep in mind that I live in the SF Bay Area, and might not get torrential downpour tsunami class rated rain or anything.

What size gloves do you wear? I have a set of Alpinestars Drystar gloves that you can have. I'm not wearing them anymore. I can't attest to their waterproof abilities since I haven't worn them in the rain. You just gotta come pick them up.

I wear a size small usually. I had no idea you were in Union City, I was just checking your website out earlier.

A* Drystars are great, I've had a pair of Apex Drystar winter gloves over 2 years, I commute daily all year round in Irish & English weather (rain rain & more rain) they've never let in a drop.

I had a pair of gloves with hipora, I cant tell if they actually let in water or not, they made my hands sweat terribly, they stunk (and I have a very weak sense of smell) they made my hands stink, sticking them in a plastic bag & into a -80C freezer for a day at work cured the smell for a couple of days, but after less than a week they began to stink again. They found their way to the bin after that.

Go for a decent pair of gloves, wet hands get cold fast, cold hands don't do you any favours on the controls.

Stick the overboots on before the rainsuit, it'll make it a lot easier to put on the rainsuit (plastic bags over your feet will do the same)

Depending on how cold it gets a neck roll/balaclava may be useful, but it will cause your helmet's visor to fog (and glasses if you wear them)

you want good tyres, BT45s are good in the wet.

jus remember being wet...and in the wind will make temps drop real low.
keep in mind your helmet...the shield will get wet..are you going to be able to see? use rainex on your sheild. maybe buy a used rain top and bottom from army surplus. they slip over clothes and they protect against the water and wind. wish i didnt have to turn my stuff in. :/

Unlined kangaroo leather isn't waterproof either.

To give an idea of what stupid money can buy you look for Rukka, they're a Finninsh company that do bike & snowmobile gear, top class stuff, 5 year warranty & excellent for commuting but crazy money.

You're probably better off asking how many days does it NOT rain?

Too many:rolleyes:

On average it works out as every 3rd day for my hometown, (average 128 a year evenly spread, 9-12 wet days each month)

Don't have the stats for my current city (Birmingham UK) but it seems worse than Dublin.

I'm about to order a new clear faceshield for my helmet, as the one I currently have installed is tinted pretty dark. \

Should I spring for the anti-fog version of the clear faceshield, or does that not really matter much? Idk how effective those models are.

I ride in the rain all the time, my leather jacket isn't explicitly water proof but it is, I have a pair of touring waterproof goretex boots / gloves, and I just chuck on one of these if I plan on stopping anywhere rainy.

I always like to keep a mac in a sac / trousers in my backpack incase it's heavy rain.

And I always wear one of these round my neck or up to below my eye level for warmth / wind protection.

Your best bet is to look for reviews of the specific one you're thinking of, I have a shark helmet which came with a fog proof visor as standard & it's excellent. I can't speak for other brands tho.

The only time it let me down was when my breath actually froze on contact with it on a hellish commute on icy, dark, twisty, unlit backroads with freezing fog & sub zero temps last December/Jan.

That was an unpleasant evening's spin & one of the coldest I've done (up there with the 120 mile -17°C windchill at 98 mph dash for the ferry, both just about sent me down with hypothermia)

Open your chin vent.

Turn your head to the side (slightly!) and the wind will blow off the rain. Do not wipe with your glove.

By the way, Cycle gear has a lot of freeze out gear things for sale that work pretty well. I think I paid $10 for a neck guard that worked great while snowboarding. Should work for rain too. They have a balaclava for $12
