Out of curiosity, why would one lower a Ninja 250?

zartan
January 14th, 2009, 07:12 PM
25-26" inseam :( that is my reason. I lowered the back to reach the ground. the 1999 Ninja I had just fit me and the 08' were raised a bit and wider. If I could have kept it stock I would have. I have to be aware of the lower link around speed bumps etc.. But it fits me perfectly now.

Why taller folks do it is most likely for faster response in the front and then do the back to keep the geometry correct.

I dropped the front only for faster steering response. If I had dropped the back too, it would have negated the front lowering and would not have any faster steering.

In all, if you drop both front and rear the same amounts, you end up with almost the same handling characteristics of a stock bike, albeit with clearance issues.

Why taller people would do both front and back??? looks?? :confused20:

You are correct. If it is dropped evenly.
I have mine dropped in the front quite a bit. It is pretty flicky. Most likely more steep then the stock geometry. I took it all the way through the spacers.
I have heard this from others who dropped the back first,Then the front to go abit steeper.
If I didn't need to drop the rear, I probably would have dropped the front anyway . I miss the 16" front tire on my 99 Ninja. Quick it was. It did just what you told it to do and if you messed up it was your own fault.

How far did you drop your's K?

I dropped them the max it could go. :D

Installed the blocks on the top, loosened the forks in the clamps and let them slide up till they hit the underside of the handlebar mounts. I think that measures about 1- 1.5"

love the change it made and how the bike steers effortlessly through a turn.

I don't get it. :idunno: What if you ever want to go on a road that's not perfectly straight? For a dragstrip-only bike sure, but I don't think many of us are taking our 4-stroke 250's to the Wednesday-night drags...

Check out this tiny dude on a stock-height ninjette:

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/357691631_2oJzT-L.jpg

And check out how much clearance (not much) remains under the left fairing while he's heeled over to the left. Buying a sportbike and then cutting its performance off at the knees at the one thing it's actually terrific at (cornering) goes right over my head...

If someone needs to lower their bike as a last resort because they simply can't ride it without such a modification, more power to them, and I'm glad they found a solution that works for them. But low-rider bikes as an image thing is right up there with wearing baggy pants 6" too low and trucker hats as things that I'll never understand. Geez, when did I get so old! :wheelchair: (And get off my lawn, you crazy kids!)

That,Alex is truly a concern I take seriously. I have to think ahead about speed bumps, tracks and such. If I take it easy I am fine. I live in a rural area and pretty know all the bumps in our favorite roads.

Lowered bikes also can bottom out or up?? on the rear fender and eventually cut through that plastic lining. I have the spring set stiff to avoid that. Also no more passengers. Swing arm nut can hit the pipes if not shimmed correctly. I pull my spools off when not lifting the bike. Many considerations.
I would have left it stock if I could have. But could not hold it up even with tippy toes. just really leaned to one side. :( not safe at all.
So guys really think hard about lowering it if you don't have too.
Not bad if you just do the front like KKim.

Is there a lowering kit you have to buy in order to lower just the front?

Your bike is looking good Katlyn.

Can you flat foot it now or on tippy toes?

Thanks. I flat foot with just the tiniest bend in my knee. It's perfect and comfortable. I have a 29" inseam.

lowering the bike for quicker steering or to suit rider dimensions is a good thing....

but the ONLY reason i'd be getting me some lowering links would be to raise my bike abit! (http://www.soupysperformance.com/catalog/item/4408900/5405407.htm)

Steve... careful with those soupy's rear links. there have been people that have used them and have reported interference problems between them and the linkage.

thanx for the heads up kelly! wasn't planning on doing that any time soon, but had read somewhere that those particular links would actually raise the bike abit....

mahalo :)

The perspective makes my legs look longer than bike but actually, I'm almost flat foot (heel about an 1 inch off ground on both sides.

This is when I first lowered 1 inch in front, and I think 1.5-2 inch in back. I now moved it up a notch after discovering the back wheel rubs up onto the undertray and was wearing it away. I can now just get the balls of my feet down but oh well, good enough.

Being a bit "short" we had to lower mine just to fit. Spacers in the front and links in the back but still one hole to go there.. I still can't flat foot it tho. Having no problems with handling. Here is a pic of the bike as it is now.
