I was chatting with my grandmother last night and she kept saying... "I was there when". I hit my like a ton of bricks that I need to create this thread.

Post what you where "there for". It can be anything; a historic event, a life changing even, funny event anything. Also, come back and update the thread when "you where there" for future events.

Examples:
I was there when - alex.s blew up his engine
I was there when - Jiggles thought he could build a deathproof bike

I will go first.

I was there when - the internet was a bunch of dial up BBS's
I was there when - chone rode his first track day
I was there when - gas was 1:29 a gallon :(

Oh really, you were on Apollo 11 and actually saw Neil Armstrong step foot on the moon. Didn't know we had an astronaut on our forums.

You must mean you were in front of a TV. I wouldn't consider being 238,000 miles away as "being there". Haha.

If that's the case, then I too was there when Neil Armstrong said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Jono,

I think "I was there" refers to a period of time as well as being at a specific time and place of an event, at least in this game. Old people talk lol BTW: In my case, I was actually there.

And lol at Zombiphone!

I am not much on thread/forum rules... but "I was there" can be relative or used either way if it prompts you to post it.

In my 3, I use it both ways. I was physically there when chode rode track and I was metaphorically there when gas was $1.29 a gallon, same as Frugal was there for the moon landing.

It's all good.

I was there when people were saying "I'll never pay $1 a gallon for gas!" during the second oil embargo. For that matter, I was there for the first one too.

I was there (really) when the Space Shuttle Columbia made its first flight.

I was there when the Beatles invaded America.

I was there (and glued to the TV) When Star Trek premiered. And was canceled.

I was there when they still said "in living color" on NBC.

I was there when getting good reception meant futzing with rabbit ears.

I was there when the biggest media market in the country had 7 TV channels, plus UHF, which was useless.

I was there when Pay TV (that's cable to you) was thought up. I remember thinking I'd never want to pay for TV.

I was there when the Yankees were on Channel 11, the Mets were on Channel 9, and we were all asked if we knew where our children were at 10 pm every night.

I was there for the Heidi game.

I was there when we actually did atom bomb drills in school.

I was there when four students were shot by the National Guard at Kent State.

I was there (really) when Woodstock (the first one... the others don't count) closed down the NY State Thruway.

I was there when the Russians and the Chinese were the bad guys.

I was there when Chet and David said good night to each other.

I was there when Sesame Street premiered. And I was too old for it.

It was a fantastic club with some bands who went on to be huge acts I particularly remember seeing Genesis there way before they were famous. I was wowed, they were unique.
For the record Duster Bennett (also seen there) is playing a Telecaster not a Stratocaster as stated

Looking today at the list of bands playing that cramped little pub venue it's kind of surreal It was a good time to be young :)

Oh let's try this...

I was there when

News came on paper
Music came on tape
Videos were sold and rent in a dedicated store
You had to wait to watch a new tv episode and hope a rerun would fill in what you missed.
The internet made beeps, boops, and buzz noises when you logged on.
Phones had curly cords you could wrap around your finger.

Last night Google Play gave me X-Men for signing up. As I watched the intro set at a Jewish Ghetto, I wondered how soon would it be before the understanding of what a sewn on yellow Star of David meant, and the horror that surrounds such a simple piece of cloth, would be lost and forgotten. How long before Hollywood, in order to show a desperate and tragic childhood, switches to another place?

Time marches on, there is no stopping it. I just wonder what gets lost as the years fall away.

Wiki, source of all trustable knowledge on the Net, says year round schedules were in effect in the US since 1900 - primarily in urban areas where families didn't have farms and ranches to work on during the summer. It names off the major cities as examples. By 1975 it'd spread to most of the country offering it.

There were two (?) year round schools where I grew up. One was one of the elementary school and I think the Catholic school was year round.

I was there when most homes still had rotary dial phones.

I was there when Sugar Smacks renamed their cereal to Honey Smacks because moms started fearing feeding too much sugar to their kids.

I was there when Hypercolor shirts and New Kids on the Block were the latest thing.

Edit: And slap bracelets and mood rings! Good ol' elementary/middle school days.

Gawd, the 80's rocked, didn't they? :D

Remember when the slap bracelets were banned due to injuries? Thought it was hysterical when they came back not too long ago.

Thanks, Teri! I guess I've led a sheltered life, as I've never seen one before.

If I remember right, the original ones were sometimes metal and either idiots were removing the protective cover, or it was fraying and coming off.

Ah, found it:

U.S. Consumer Panel Warns Of Injury by 'Slap' Bracelets
AP
Published: October 30, 1990

A popular toy bracelet may cause hand and wrist injuries to children, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said today.

The toy, a slap bracelet, is a thin strip of metal covered by woven fabric or paperand wraps into the bracelet when the wrist is struck with it.

The commission said the toys have passed tests given to items with sharp edges. But the panel said it was concerned that, over time, the fabric or paper covering may tear, exposing the user to a sharp metal edge. As a result, cuts may occur.

The panel said parents should alert children to the potential danger and should examine the toys frequently. In the event a tear occurs, the toy should be discarded.
The commission said it was continuing its investigation into the toy to see if further action is warranted.

Thanks, Teri. I see now how I missed it: timing! Was a working stiff, had a little kid with another on the way. No internet, no cable TV. Prettywife, work, fixer-upper house, and kid kept and me busy then.

I was there when they gave me a company pager! I was there when people would jump and contort when they were surprised by a vibrating pager.

Ahh! Simpler times...

I was there when a scientific discovery was made.

It was in a national park, many many years ago. A beaver had lived in his dam for many years, as a solitary beaver. He was a happy beaver -- he had a good life. His daily activities were simple, because he was a simple beaver. He liked to wake up in the morning, go out and find a log, gnaw on it; and then find another log. Researchers all determined this to be an indecisive beaver, but this beaver was very picky. Many would say that the beaver was strange -- as he had not chosen a mate and was nearing old age in terms of beaver-years.

However, this beaver was a beaver among beavers. This beaver was a bad-ass-motherfcuking beaver. Most researchers would observe this beaver for the time required to obtain their degrees, scholastic recognition, and to fulfill their own needs. But this goddamn fcuking beaver had passed the test of time. This beaver had defied all expectations in terms of his lifespan. This was a mean old beaver, and he developed a reputation for not tolerating any bullisht.

At one point in time, a small child threw an empty bottle at the solitary meditating beaver. The beaver sat quietly, and as the empty soda bottle ricocheted across the log upon which the beaver sat -- the beaver did not move. The beaver sat quietly, as he knew how the streams and the rain worked. He was not afraid. The beaver propped up a stick in a northerly direction, and with his rudimentary sun-dial, he calculated the time of day and year -- he sat quietly as he calculated the wind patterns, the water runoff calculations, and the traffic estimation in the coming rain storms.

This beaver was no ordinary beaver. This was a mean old beaver who had a bone to pick with his god and he wouldn't lay down and submit to death until he was good and ready. As the beaver watched the spoiled child get back into it's car and drive off down toward the next tourist attraction, the beaver was struck with a revelation. The beaver sat quietly on his log, and he was content. Social progress had been made.

A beaver -- a small mammal. Only 13 inches in length, 6 inches wide. He had displaced a human child. The beaver sat quietly in his solitude. The beaver felt powerful, but he knew that power was a human emotion, and his beaver brain wrestled with the concept. This beaver sat on his log, and he thought very long and hard. He watched the winds, he watched the level of water in the stream, and he watched the clouds and the moon.

The rains picked up, the weather moved in. The level of water in the stream in which the beaver lived rose, and the beaver climbed to high ground. From his new nest on the bluff, the beaver watched all that he had lived for be destroyed. His dam was destroyed. His home washed away. The water carved a new path through the mountain in which the beaver lived. But this was no ordinary beaver. This beaver refused to roll over and die.

As time passed, the beaver invented new convictions. This beaver grew smarter. The beaver no longer enjoyed spectators, and he certainly no longer appreciated scrutiny. This beaver was fcuking pissed off. This was one angry beaver. He knew that his work was paramount to the forefront of human survival, but this beaver was still sitting on a log in a different forest. This beaver was a very small being, but he sat for long hours and spent many days calculating the odds. This beaver needed new territories to roam through. This beaver needed new dams to build, new logs to gnaw, and a new world to own.

At the end of the day, the beaver built a new dam and everyone lived happily ever after.
