Added a fun mod this morning. At the bottom of the forum home page (http://www.ninjette.org/forums/index.php), there's a section for User Spotlight. It changes every day, and chooses a random user based on a few parameters (50 minimum posts, logged in within the past month, and posted within the past two months). If you have a profile pic, it will display that. If you only have an avatar pic, it will display that. It will not choose any user that doesn't have at least one of those pic areas loaded.

EDIT 9/13/2015: Widened the pool a bit by changing some parameters: Minimum posts are now 25, users need to have logged in within past 2 months, posted within past 4 months, and users who have not customized their avatar or profile pic are now eligible.

I don't have time to go through each sub forum so I just look at the portal from time to time. Unless I'm trying to help find a thread for someone else I never go to the forum main page.

Only works on the Forum home page, unfortunately. The portal page is a separate add-on, and doesn't support some of these little tchotchkes.

Rojo - definitely use the Unread Posts link (http://www.ninjette.org/forums/search.php?do=getnew) instead of just looking at the last 10 threads on the Portal page. You can choose to view just as many or just as few posts as you like, but as you visit threads, it then only shows ones that have been updated since you visited them.

I just wish it was unread threads instead of posts. Because you see like 300 unread posts, and then after viewing 1 thread, it'll be down to like 280.

It never changed. Did it get confused because February is a short month?

No, it was partially my fault, and related to the server change. I noticed at 7 AM this morning that it hadn't changed yet, and realized that it wasn't scheduled to run until 8 AM (pacific). Something to do with the time zone behaviors on the different versions of linux. I changed it to run at midnight instead, which then means it didn't change at 8, but should change tonight at midnight (pacific). But - it may very well not even change then, as there is a counter in the mod that checks to see if it has run in the past certain amount of time, and doesn't change if it has been run twice. This is in case the server reboots or restarts the scheduled tasks, it doesn't rotate incorrectly. I don't know if that counter changed or not when I made the change, so there is a small chance that it will not change tonight; but even if that's the case I think it is almost certainly going to work correctly by midnight tomorrow at the latest.

2nd two timer here. Is your code working correctly?

:) Random is random. It's funny - people complained that the Apple shuffle algorithm wasn't working, as sometimes they would hear the same song very close together. They had to massage the random to make it not truly random, and weight it so songs wouldn't be chosen that close together.

The user spotlight isn't picking from all of the 10K+ members; you have to have posted within the last 60 days, and visited within the past 30 days, so it's a somewhat more compact set of people.

The portal page is one of the most widely viewed pages on the site, having the user spotlight somewhere on there would be a fantastic idea minus the fact that it doesn't work :bounce:

No, remember... we pulled my old chair with the 4wheeler in the snow and ice last winter. It was utterly destroyed by the time we were done with it. An auto insurance claim had to be filed with the neighbors car too. lol
