I looked really hard, but I'm not finding the option where you can do this for a post, for an individual user. Do you need a certain post count or privilege to utilize that feature?

Necro thread. Revived from the dead.

I have 142 posts and I still can't like other peoples posts. Yet I have 56 likes myself.

If that many posts still counts as a newbie that you can't trust, I'm gonna yell out a big WTF. Edit just found it. 1000 posts before you can like someone. Hah, whatever.

P.s. MOTM gets a request that might be able to shorten this value. Or can it??? The world may never know.

You know I think it's great that this is a privately owned forum, unlike the sickening monetizing machine that is the group of Verticalscope forums.

But I did notice it's a little cliquey over here. The 1000 post minimum before being able to like a post is just one little way to say "you're not one of our valued members, and you never will be."

Hahah, it's taken me almost 2.5 years to get to 142 posts. Hmm, let me do some rough math in my head here... about 17 years before I can like someone. Hmmm, that's not too bad after all. I'm going to start picking out my favorite posts right now! :D

It was a request from a MOTM to be 1000 post. So, not a clique thing but a request that was won/earned by a member. It makes since. If it was less the risk is higher for thumb down request by the fly by night members.

Try welcoming the new members, playing the picture game, etc....to gain post.

I can see how it seems that way, but that isn't/wasn't the intent. The way the feature is used on this board isn't for a "thanks", where someone appreciates the answer that another poster gave. It was meant for those who have spent quite a bit of time here on the site (because they liked the content, the fellow users, etc.), to be able to support posts that they felt were helpful to the site. Essentially, the reasons they are here, and stick around.

A new user might be very thankful for a particularly useful post that they see. A new user might also be very appreciate of a post that is controversial/inflammatory in some way that the majority of long-time posters here might not appreciate. Just by post count, that new user is unlikely to have spent as much time here to have the background and feel for what works here and doesn't work here. There's nothing particularly smarter/better/faster/attractive/intriguing/insightful about those who have been here longer than somebody joining today. Heck, I've been here since the beginning and I'm an idiot. :) But - by being here long enough to reach that post count, and choosing to be here that long, there must be a reason or reasons why the board is worthwhile for that user to keep coming back. By inference, that same user would have a pretty good idea about what it is that keeps them coming back, and can share that perspective via a click of the "helpful posts" icon.

It was a request from a MOTM to be 1000 post. So, not a clique thing but a request that was won/earned by a member. It makes since. If it was less the risk is higher for thumb down request by the fly by night members.

There are certainly some variances in how hard it is to craft a post, and it is hard to value a 1-word post in the word game as compared to a detailed tech thread or ride report. But on balance, it's as reasonable a metric as any to identify those who spend the most time here and contribute the most to the site.

There are currently 162 members on the site who have hit that 1000 post minimum, so while it is a subset of the whole, it's not a particularly tiny amount that have felt it useful/worthwhile to do so. YMMV.

Some people abuse it, unfortunately. They think it's cute. 95% of the posters and 99% of the mods here are fantastic people. So don't let the roughly 5 posters and 1 mod jack ass you off this message board.

There's a thumbs down too? So what people are worried about is that new member a-holes will down vote legitimate posts as a vindictive punishment to people they don't like?

Solution: set the upvotes to 100 posts, but leave the downvotes at 1000 posts. Is that doable?

On a local forum I'm on, they have thank and spank buttons. Most of the spanks are just in jest and having fun. If anyone comes in the forum and makes trouble, the ban hammer comes down pretty quick anyway. No real need to have a minimum number of posts for anything.

I think I appreciate the sentiment, but this is a board that doesn't have any mods, so I do wonder if we're still talking about the same site.

Solution: set the upvotes to 100 posts, but leave the downvotes at 1000 posts. Is that doable?

Sadly, no. That particular vbulletin mod has a simple filter to allow access, and can only be tied to post count. That's why there isn't more nuance in allowing people who have been here longer but with fewer posts, which I can do with access to some of the other areas of the board.

Thanks for the down votes JohnnyBravo on some of my posts here and elsewhere.

Alex, I don't think I said anything here that warrants a down vote. What this shows is that some people with OVER 1000 posts are abusing the system.

I would like you to consider getting rid of the upvote/downvote system completely.
