where can I find the mesh that goes in behind the fairings to keep debri off of the engine compartment. In the fall I get leaves entering behind the front wheel and they want to sit on the fork in the exhaust.I've seen a lot of bikes on the forum with this mesh but ca'nt seem to find any!!

My machine didn't come equipped with said "mesh". I reckon that here in Tucson we didn't need it so they didn't install it, 'cause there ain't no leaves to worry much over!

do you mean the diy type of mesh?

if you google "grille mesh", then you will get a bunch of hits. just gotta figure out what type you want. ebay even sells it.

since the lower fairing separates into two halves, not exactly sure how you would attach it though.

You can honestly go to Home Depot and get "Gutter mesh". It's designed to keep leaves and such from getting stuck in your gutters. It's galvanized so it won't rust and is a relatively fine mesh (and not to shabby looking). Or if you're like me and have a metal supplier nearby you can go buy a huge honkin' sheet of aluminum mesh for dirt cheap :)

I initially cut a piece and mounted it to protect the radiator (Those LITTLE guys are like $600!)... While I was there I cut a little extra and put it in the side vents (You can see the, both in that picture).

looks pretty cool :D

how did you attach it to the fairing?

VeX
February 12th, 2009, 10:20 PM
For the side ones? I literally gorilla glued (strongest glue in all the land) like 3-4 small bolts by the bolt head around each hole. Then I blue loctited a nut onto each and slide the mesh on and then added another bolt to secure the mesh. That way you can plausibly adjust the height of 4 corners of the mesh to keep it from touching the fairing.

As for the front radiator guard? I was GOING to do a write-up months ago on it, but it requires you to pick up like 3/4" angle aluminum and a couple of other odds and ends. I got the feeling it would've been pages of people questioning where to get every little piece and abandoned the write up. Lets say it's effectively held a couple of mm in front of the radiator and I'm sure if you have fabricating skills it's not too tricky to make something work :)

I know, it is a rip off...but I couldn't find this "honeycomb" style in any hardware store or anything. Plus, this stuff was really pliable. It's sturdy, but also very moldable. I think if I bought something from the hardware store it would be a little more difficult to mold to the fairing. overall, I think it was worth the $$.

Am in the design stage now. I found some gutter grate at Lowe`s that is made of black plastic. The plan is to make a frame out of aluminum--stuff used for window screens, and mount it in the front opening from the inside. Am still exploring different methods of holding the frame in place. I will put some closed cell foam strips in the fairing to stop any potential harmonic vibrations.

Yes, YES.......Dr. Fronkenstein is at work! The greatest thing about these little Ninjitsu's is that the we can re-engineer so many parts of it to suit our individual pleasure zones. Toooooooo kool. I am going to get some of this honeycomb stuff and do some molding of my own. I just replaced the stock horn assembly with a 110 dB blaster, again, another little mod that makes your production machine....well, YOURS.:bump2:

I intend to mount something in my fairing cuts and the mesh will give me something to mount it to.

Buffalony's first link seems to be the best deal so far, but after searching ALL FREAKIN' DAY I finally found another really good deal on honeycomb mesh. CrazyPC.com has "Crazy PC Hex Mesh" (http://www.crazypc.com/products/200.html) for $6.95 per 11.5" square panel and 10% off of that with coupon code "CPCMEMORIAL" until the 7th of June. All the rest of the places seem to be over $40 for a piece about the sizeof BikeBandit's... like this Amazon seller (http://www.amazon.com/HONEYCOMB-MESH-18-RACING-PRODUCTS/dp/B000UKQAAE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1275608713&sr=8-3), which is too close to BikeBandit's horrible price and this place (http://stores.channeladvisor.com/uscarstereo/items/item.aspx?itemid=3509563) is even worse (much smaller pattern though)!

At 11.5"x11.5", I'm not sure that Crazy PC's offering is big enough to cover the V-shaped cuts in one piece. The longer part of the V is around 13" long. Good ol' Pythagorean theorem says that 11.5" square is 16.23456" diagonal, which means that it definitely is enough to cover the fairing cut in two pieces. Because I am mounting something in the crevice, I can hide the seam. I'm sure others can make cool-looking designs to hide the cut... like a segment painted white to continue the 2009 SE white stripe, for example. Edit: Looks like it covers in one piece... no seam.

Anyway, it says that it is oil-coated to protect against rust. What can I do to ensure that it's all gone before I paint it?

FWIW, I ordered 4 sheets and shipping was a bit over $7 cross-country (they are Eastern).

OK, it's here and it looks like it may be *just* enough to cover the V-shaped side fairing cuts with a single piece. I still can't be sure 'cuz it's close, I don't wanna scratch anything by touching (that's as near as I'll get), and I'm not ready to take my fairings off.

Now, I know I saw a tutorial somewhere around here for bending and installing mesh. Anyone know where or what to search for? It may not have been here but it was definitely a 250.

Hey guys, If you are looking for a really trick setup for the front of the fairing.....

Take a piece of that mesh, spray it black, and then use a template with the "K" kawasaki logo and spray the logo on the mesh using whatever color your bike is (or green for you black bike folks).

Or whatever logo you prefer.

We'll get into that after JET finds out how to do this stuff right. I'm watchin you JET. Hooking this up wit a tutorial would be epic. then I'll try to trick it in my own way some how.

BTW that honey comb still looks the best. I have a bunch of nice mesh I took from work but the holes are rounded instead of honeycomb...doesnt look as good IMO

Some Dawn would be perfect. then sand. then dawn again, rinse really well, then dry

Yeah, that's like the stuff we can get at Lowes/Home Depot (gutter guard). Much more selection though.

It's not really the same as, say, this:
http://www.crazypc.com/products/200.html

That stuff was made with a hexagonal shape stamped through a sheet and looks much better for it. My Alienware M11x uses some tiny hex mesh and my Antec 900 case uses some of about the right size. That Crazy PC stuff is perfect for the side vents though it doesn't come in large enough pices to cover the whole front area.
