After a discussion with Sound Wave, he pointed me in the direction of ZG Outlet to purchase a DB windscreen. Thanks, Gary! I ordered it last Saturday night and it arrived today in the mail. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showpost.php?p=23520&postcount=39

Okay, lets get busy and install this puppy. Incredibly easy... or so I thought. It's always something, isn't it? More on that later. :(

Begin with removing the 4 screws from around the perimeter of the stock windscreen.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_geC920GCq38/SZcqOYKJ8WI/AAAAAAAACpA/B6x74WLWPVs/s640/DSC05076-1.JPG

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_geC920GCq38/SZcqP-xDvXI/AAAAAAAACpQ/-QPG2vu85EE/s640/DSC05078-1.JPG

They are held on with the same setup as the fairings. A metal screw with a nylon washer to protect the bodywork and a captive nut in a rubber sleeve in back.

Here you can see how it is all put together. The other 3 are the same way.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_geC920GCq38/SZcqRlfxT9I/AAAAAAAACpg/M6T8XOYmhF4/s640/DSC05080-1.JPG

carefully slide the stock windscreen out.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_geC920GCq38/SZcqUKqQTvI/AAAAAAAACp4/05CuWR8tcMk/s640/DSC05083-1.JPG

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_geC920GCq38/SZcqU_u9IrI/AAAAAAAACqA/ciAVH1QSzIs/s640/DSC05084-1.JPG

You need to transfer the old mounting hardware from the old screen to the new. This is where my problem was. The rubber was old and cracking on the rubber sleeve that held the captive nut and I actually ended up breaking one sleeve. Be careful... mine was brittle and though I tried to be a careful as a I could, mine broke anyway.

Comparison of the 2 screens.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_geC920GCq38/SZcqdiv7tMI/AAAAAAAACrU/sfJhejvofJA/s640/DSC05094-1.JPG

Transfer the rubber sleeves to the new screen. Only the top 2 requires this. You can see the broken sleeve in the second pic.

Insert the new screen and loosely fit the screws on as you position it.

And of course the most important reason for choosing a Zero Gravity windscreen.

Something most of us never considered before, but in these tough economic times, I try to support as many US based companies as possible, if the quality is comparable with their foreign counterparts. In this day and age, it could mean keeping your friends, neighbors or relatives employed. We should all be doing our part, however small, to bring the focus onto helping to revive our economy by making even small changes in our buying habits.

Kelly, That looks really sharp. It looks a lot more aerodynamic than the stock screen. I would guess that in straight line sprints you will notice a considerable improvement in stability. My friend put one on his 600RR Honda and found that to be the case. I plan to get the ZG Touring version. I did check out LaminarLip--also made in the USA, but it was more expensive and seemed to be a bit of a Rube Goldberg.

Yes, light smoke. Either will do the job and to me they look almost identical. Puig is a Spanish company.

Love the new screen. That is number 2 on my to do list after the seat. I hope to be able to order the seat this week and the screen in a few more weeks when I get birthday money. Almost riding weather here. I saw a few brave riders the other day but it was only 18 degrees out. Thanks for the DIY.

stickers were on the windshield when I got it out of the box. You should email them and ask them for some if you want them.

Link them this thread to show them what you are talking about. :D

Kelly, Went to ZG Website and they make three windscreens for the Ninjette--SR Series, Part#20-281, Double Bubble, Part#16-281, and the Sport Touring, Part#23-281. The Sport Touring is 4.5" taller than the stock Kawa screen ZeroGravity-racing.com/sportbikes/kawasaki. The touring windshield is $89.95. I`ll see if I can get one through Dennis Kirk. They give a 10% discount to AMA members.

After sleeping on it for a week, I just sent in my order for the light smoke too. *shhhh*, don't tell wife.

I had changed my mind to go with the smoother look of the Puig at one point, but when it came down to it I just want to be like Kelly (in the slightly 'slower' red)... so I ordered the Zero Gravity :D

lol, Bob. In the end, the differences between the screens are not noticeable after awhile. Be proud you're supporting a US company. :)

I also took the bike out today to test it and it does seem a bit quieter and more subdued when riding. Nothing earth shattering, but there is a slight difference for me. I like it.

Although the ZG does have a more abrupt transition from bubble #1 to bubble #2, I think it actually looks more natural in person. Some of the photos I have seen online make it look a little more harsh. It does however make the windshield look like it has a "pup tent"... it looks like it stands a little more erect (sorry, I don't know how else to say that...), so the profile of the front end is changes a little more toward a "touring look," without looking like a touring bike or windshield IMN2BHO. I think I just contradicted myself, but it makes sense in my head.

Hey Kelly, I got the same color (light smoke), and it looks a lot darker than the photos of yours. Is that an exposure thing, or do the photos accurately represent the colot/tint of yours? I actually really like the way it looks in the pics.... mine is a little darker than I prefer (gonna stick with it though).

Bob,

Yes, I thought it looked rather dark for a light smoke myself, but if you notice, if the picture has a light or white background, the tint looks light. In real life, it looks pretty much as it does in the photos.

Post some pics of yours after you get it installed.... it would help others with the same colored bikes to make up their own minds.

noche_caliente
March 15th, 2009, 06:33 PM
Well, I have the Puig, but in my opinion, yes it's much better! I was getting hit in the chest with the wind and almost felt like some of the bigger gusts would take me off the back, and now I feel like it's hitting on the visor or maybe just going over the top - it's much better!

NICUNinja
March 15th, 2009, 07:49 PM
Good to know, thank you. My husband has a double bubble Puig on the ZX14 and he swears that he noticed a difference but I wasn't sure if it would be the same with the seat positioning and bar placement on the 250.

kkim
March 15th, 2009, 07:54 PM
A lot depends on how tall you are where the air blast will hit. It does make it so that you can tuck out of the wind with less bending if you are inclined to do so.

Sound Wave
March 15th, 2009, 08:28 PM
i just came back from a ride and while i was on the freeway going about 65 mph, i was trying to figure out exactly where the wind was hitting me. i was moving my left hand up and down. when i sit in my normal riding position, it hits me at my collar bones/neck. i wish it was a bit higher or lower, because sometimes my neck gets a bit uncomfortable with the wind hitting it like that... so, if i duck down a bit, it will hit me in the faceshield instead.

March 25th, 2009, 08:53 PM
Here are some pics of a ZG double bubble dark smoke on a red bike for those who want to visualize it. Sorry about the resolution.

As far as function goes, it helps reduce the wind that hits you. I'm 5'6 and all the wind seems to glance off the top of my helmet now with a moderate tuck.

My ZG dark smoke dbl bubble arrived today after I got in from my ride, put it on (only took a couple of minutes) and went out again. Huge difference...I am only 5'3", the wind went right over my head. :)

headshrink
March 27th, 2009, 05:15 PM
5'8" and although I do feel a difference, and like it, I think the winds still hits me at least in the sholders..... unless my belly is on the tank of course.

Funny though, I can't remember where it hit me with the stock shield now. I think there is a low-pressure zone at times on the the freeway, makes me want to stick my head in more or out.... I almost don't notice it anymore though.

as far as light smoke or dark smoke, think like this... If you get a Light smoke you can Always take it off to use some TINT on the backside to make it as dark as you wanna, likewise!

thats what i plan on doing. im still unsure of a ZG-DB, or a PUIG-DB! lol

I vote for ZG. It is a little more dramatic looking, and likely more effectuve.
It is also USA made (for real, not just owned in USA).

hmmm yea after looking more searches on PICs of the 2..... Im gonna go with the ZG DB light smoke!

That and yesterday when i called my favorite local store for motorcycle gear... Sportbiketrackgear.com

I was unhappy to hear that their stock of PUIG DB screens for the 250R are on BACKORDER, might take 2 weeks+ :(

Screw that i wanna get one ASAP! :D
Ill call em Monday and find out how much, how Long will it take for them to Order me a ZG-DB in light smoke!!! Brain van told me they could order a ZG, if i really wanted. So once i get the 411, and i hear theyll sell me a ZG for like $70 (i hope they dont want like $85+) and only take 2 days ... ill just Keep an Eye on Ebay for a ZG-DB.

(like 3-4 weeks ago when i called on PUIG 250R DB, "Itll be here in 2 days... you want me to order that PUIG for ya dave?") I was undecided back then... so i told him "nah, im still looking into getting 1 or the other, lol"

I have ordered a few helmets from this same store. I wish i lived close to it like you. They seem really helpful and carry nice stuff. I have a light smoke ZG DB and i love it plenty dark for me.

I'll be using this 'very complicated' DIY tomorrow when I put my DB ZG on as well. It's dark smoke, it might be too dark but I doubt I'll really need to see through the windscreen that often. Either way, it'll look badass, pics to come!

KKim,

I just installed my ZG wind screen today and I'm having trouble with the two lower screws. It seems like there's nothing for the threads to catch on, like there's no nut for the screw to catch. Any ideas?

check the wellnuts that the screws thread into... they are most likely broken and need to be replaced.

If you shine a light into the hole you should see brass-colored threads if the stupid rubber nut hasn't broken off. I discovered yesterday (after taking the fairing apart of course  ) that 2 of the windshield screws are longer in order to thread into the bottom holes. The shorter ones wouldn't reach the thread for me.

You were right, the back part of the rubber nut thingy broke off. :-( I managed to salvage them but it was a pain in the butt. Thanks for your help.

Yea I just installed mine and had the same issue, I switched the upper wellnuts to the lower part. This requires you to take your fairings off and pull the gauge cluster out enough to put the well nuts back in. It was a real PITA... :banghead:

You can get well nuts or a complete bolt set here:
http://www.bikebolts.com/kawasaki-parts/ninja-250rex-250/08-09-kawasaki-ex250r-complete-fairing-fastener-kit

Coupon for that place:

I just took the bike for a ride today and the difference is amazing. The wind is directed up over my shoulders now, definitely worth it...

Thanks again for the DIY kkim

So I just ordered a light smoke DB for my red 250R... Only reason I went with light gray is I have already a dark smoke screen for my Icon helmet so I don't want to be completely blind when ducking on those long highway runs :) Will post pics when done :)

Really, only difference youll notice from a light vs dark smoke ZG-DB is if you Ride at Night!
During the day it wont matter. Unless you have a GPS unit mounted in such a way, the dark DB reflects too much glare at you or sumin'.

Yeah, the light gray would be considered dark in my book. I have the light gray, and like it, but it had to grow on me because I thought I was actually ordering LIGHT gray. It looks pretty good on the red.

I have light smoke ZG DB, on my ninja!

As you can see, on a sunny day or up close it looks light, Dusk or cloudy days it looks DARK!

They are... bottom ones are longer(not by much either...) than the bolts at the top of the windscreen

Grrr... bought my ZG double bubble windscreen (dark smoke) from motorcycle-superstore.com... I'm usually very pleased with them. Unfortunately, this time they didn't take any precautions when shipping and the windscreen arrived damaged.

I had ordered a new jacket at the same time and whoever packed it threw both the jacket and the windscreen in the same box with no packing material whatsoever.

I was looking forward to putting the windscreen on today and evaluating the results, but now... :( ... now, I'm processing a return.

I'll still go for a ride to feel better.

Uhh, you don't look through the windscreen. That's why so many paint theirs solid black. :)

during the day it is easy to see through. with a clear helmet visor, it can be difficult at times to see though the dark screen at night... it depends on the amount of street light available.

i used to use mine whenever i was in a full tuck to either get out of the wind or the rain. i still do it with my honda as well.

thanks for this DIY KKim, i have a windscreen on the way and was wondering if i needed to take the dash mount out to install. wasnt sure if the 2 lower nuts holding screen in place would fall into fairing. apparently its a simple install, as long as my rubbers are in one piece ;)

Nope, they are held in place by plastic bracket/tabs. IIRC, you only need to remove the bolts on the windsheild itself.

IMO light smoke is actually dark smoke.... so dark smoke will really be DARK smoke. I have grown to like the light smoke, but was initially disappointed to see how dark it is. I say this just to underscore how dark dark will be, so if that is what you like, you will probably be happy with it. I think these windshields tend to look darker than they are because we really aren't looking through them, but down at them, so light doesn't come through it the same as if we were looking through them.

Thanks, I think you've convinced me to not get the dark smoke. I did notice the light smoke definitely has some dark tones, and I think that will look great with the white ninjette. The dark smoke might be a bit much dark and stick out more than I'd like it to.

Yeah, dark smoke is pretty much black. I would have gotten light smoke, but that was on backorder and I didn't want to wait, so I got dark smoke. I like it though, it works with my 2009 SE (green/black/white).

I cut my wrist twice, my thumb once, last year from all the washings! :ouch:

More than a year later I noticed this post. Sorry. I took a break from the forums for a while.

I havent been cut by the windshield spikes yet (knock on green). I love watching people walk up to them then pressing them and saying "Ouch, those are sharp" when they expected them not to be. I'm actually really surprised how sharp they are. The very tip of them dont hold paint. lol I think they look great next to the ZG DB. I tend to catch rather large bugs with the top two spikes. Recently, a non-biker gf of mine asked me what they for! I told her "to catch birds!"

I am a little concerned about the bar end spikes piercing me in a crash. I take them off from time to time. I noticed having an angle on the bar end can be a great thing on long rides to help me straighten my right wrist.

I have black spiked valve caps too :)
