INSURANCE company LV was ordered yesterday to pay a £7m settlement to a bride who suffered brain damage when knocked off a motorbike by an uninsured driver.

As the last known insurer of the car involved in the crash, LV will pay a £2.1m lump sum for past and future expenses, and costs for nursing linked to a cost index in the claimant's native country of Brazil, which is estimated to be around £5m.

Barbara Picoli Oliva, then 21, was riding pillion behind her husband when they were hit on the Albert Embankment in June 2009, by an uninsured driver who jumped a red light.

Despite wearing a helmet, Picoli Oliva injuries were such that she spent months in a coma in Charing Cross Hospital. She has recovered to the point of being able to conduct limited conversations and walk with assistance, however, she will always need around the clock care.

Her husband escaped with minor injuries, and according to reports, has now left Picoli Oliva, who is divorcing him on grounds of desertion.

LV could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.
