Had a few minutes to add some elan to the bike today. My bike is red and I put yellow rim tape on it along with my yellow soviet union logos. Very cool looking. And YES, I did try to take a pic, but the camera battery died. You'll have to wait until Tuesday.

I also picked up some small neodymium magnest to put inside the oil filter when I change it this weekend. Don't worry, if you've ever handled a neodymium magnet, you know they will not come off. These are 1/4" diameter and fit on the inner rim of the filter (can't get into the engine even if they do come loose). Plus, at have 7 lbs. of force, they won't move. Should grab any metal that comes loose.

the magnet is just for metal chips right? It won't be of any use to trigger lights.

Trigger what lights?

oh, stoplights. Some people put magnets on the bottom of the oilpan thinking it's gonna trigger stoplights.

That's the first time I've ever heard that. Are they the same people that wear copper wrist bands when the play golf so they can harness their chi?

The magnets are to grab metal shavings in the oil. That's all. No snake oil.

Like I said, I tried to take a picture and the camera died. Tomorrow for sure!

Apparently, Neodymium magnets can fracture at temps over 150 degrees. Maybe having it inside the oil filter isn't a good idea. But i suppose thats what the nickel coating is for. Anyone else know more about this?

"Neodymium magnets are very fragile, so they are often plated with a protective coating of metals such as nickel. The magnets can fracture at temperatures over 150 °C, or under impact as a result of their own acceleration. The magnets may then break apart so suddenly that flying pieces cause injury. Some magnet suppliers now supply these magnets encased in plastic or rubber to lessen the risk of injury and breakage on impact."

Well, that may be, but they are going to be fixed so there will be no impact to fracture them. I'm not convinced that heat alone will cause them to crack. I guess I will find out.

Thomas - I don't think it's the heat you need to worry about as rapid changes in temperature - it's like pyrex dishes - you can put them in the oven, and you can put them in the freezer, but not such a great idea to go from freezer to oven or vice versa...

That's true, but the oil heats up slowly, it doesn't instantly go from 50 to 200.
