View Full Version : Just how noisy should valve tap be?

Just finished serving my '07 250. All valve clearances within acceptable tolerances so didn't bother adjusting.

Noticed that notorious Kawasaki rattle is prevalent into the valves and I'm just wondering if I should have tightened them up. I read a comment from somebody that said the minute your valves stop rattling you've got a problem because you've made the clearances too tight.

Any options out there on adjusting to make it a little quieter? Ill take some video and post for clarification.

You may try to see if its your cam chain tensioner making all the noise. Also mine are hardly noticeable like the pipe is louder.

I did read another thread that mentioned the tensioner may be the culprit. I might investigate this at the next service interval. I'm not sure if it's worse fixing. Just wait till the video uploads and see what you think!

Its 2 bolts it takes you 30 sec to take it off and a min to put it back on.

1) If you changed nothing, everything should be working and sounding as before your "service". ;)

2) If she sounds like a lawn mower and a sewing machine working at once, the noise is perfectly normal.

3) Just in case you overlooked it:

Yep sounds like a lawnmower and a sewing machine. I put that down to the infamous kwaka rattle.

that sounds like ****. did you forget to put the chain guides in or something? or maybe you didn't retract the tensioner when you were installing it? sounds like a stretched cam chain. maybe try reinstalling the tensioner. you don't even have to drain the oil or anything

I didn't touch the valves or the cam chain tensioner. All I did was measure the valve clearances and put the rocker cover back on.

Can you post a video of your ex 250 so I can compare?

Found out what the problem was.

Here is the parts diagram with a description of what was missing from the vital part:

Here is a video of the cam chain tensioner assembly after I'd pulled it.

And finally here is the result of installing a fresh tensioner assembly. Replacing it was the only option as without the collar the bearings had scored the shaft pretty bad.

I still think that the timing chain has been stretched a bit. I can still hear a bit of rattle. What do you think?

Hard to tell in the video best way I have found is put your ear on the case after the bike is cold if its louder then up top its the cam chain if up top is loud its something with a valve.
