View Full Version : LED Signals and Fender Chop

So, I bit the bullet and took a Dremel to my fender. Before doing this I purchased some LED strips from http://www.radiantz.com/. I can't link directly to the product I purchased, but I can tell you they're called 'Flexible LED Array.' You can choose the size in multiples of 5 LEDs; I decided on 25. The whole assembly with the 'D' Tube and end caps is about 4 inches long. They come with adhesive backing, so you just peel and stick.

I wanted them to go on the plastic to the right and left of the seat, so I had to drill a tiny hole in the the fender to run the wires. I also had to use silicone in the end caps to seal the water out. I put some around the hole where the wires run as well. I forgot I was going to need some resistors to get them to blink, so right now they just come on and stay on... resistors should be in on Monday.

All in all it wasn't a bad project, but due to crap weather and a lack of tools, the whole thing took about a week. But, yesterday one of the grad students in my office let me barrow his Dremel so I could chop that fender. By going nice and slow with the cutting wheel, wire brush attachment, and sander, it came out quite clean IMO. Used a SS L-bracket to mount my LP to the under side of my taillight... no LP light yet.

Anyway, the whole point of all this is the pictures, so here they are!

Not sure when they'll be here... definitely this week sometime. If the weather doesn't suck, which it will, I'll have them installed and get some pictures next weekend.

The lights are officially 'blinkers' just needed some more resistance. I used the following product to get them blinkin':

Protons still aren't in, but New Enough says they're shipped. Can't wait...

Do you know how many ohms are on that resistor?

I don't know how many ohms the part I bought is. However, when I was testing a few things, I left one of the stock lights installed and wired some resistors I had laying around into the other LED signal. First thing I learned: Resistors don't work in series for this application. Second thing I learned: a 15 ohm resistor (wired in parallel) will get those lights blinking. I tried 1 ohm, 5 ohm, and 15 ohm.

15 ohms wired in parallel works.

I didn't just wire up the resistors I had because they were literally burning up as I tested them. The ones I was using were some lightweight junkers I had from class. This application requires something more robust. Also, the part I purchased off ebay came with some in-line splice connectors as well as a protective cover and mounting bracket for the resistors.
