hey all, im not sure what i need to do to my chain if anything. its mostly black. and i wasnt sure if i should just lube it, or completely remove all the current stuff on it till its 100% sparking metal then grease it or what. ill try to post a picture after work

Actually... black is better than brown from rust. So you got that going for you :) And no... you don't have to scrub on it until its "sparkling metal" again.
