View Full Version : A Quick Little Integrated Turn Signal How-To (Dial Up Warning)

I ordered the full clear tail kit with integrated signals from a supplier. It
came in yesterday and I spent about an hour last night working on it. I figured that some of the people who are a little gun shy about doing this mod may wish to check it out.

This is prepping for the fender eliminator I plan on doing.

Before:

The Kit:

Disconnect the turn signals from the fender by removing this screw and the plate, then pulling out the inner plate. Then go back up to the wiring and remove the connectors that signal goes to. DO ONE AT A TIME to avoid confusing the wiring. Once disconnected, you can pull the wiring and the signal off:
http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=138&pictureid=1344

Cut the wires (if required) and strip back some of the insulation for the butt connectors, install the socket into the housing. For some extra clearance, I removed the handle using a 12mm and 10mm socket. Here is a pic:
http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=138&pictureid=1348

Reinstall the lamp:
http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=138&pictureid=1346

Install the new clear cover:
http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=138&pictureid=1347

You can see the extension I put on to reach the new socket. Just crimp down on the connectors and have some electrical tape handy to wrap around the connectors to keep some water out (that white connector is what came with that, I left it on for easy identification. It was cut and connected to the two hanging wires):
http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=138&pictureid=1348

Don't sweat about what wire to connect to where. It is a DC circuit. Positive or negative does not matter here, the power will still flow through the bulb. Just make sure you are using the two wires that went to the original signal! So once you have it all connected, you can test it out and you should see this:
http://www.ninjette.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=138&pictureid=1349

For a comparison, I took a picture of the old assembly flashing on the right side (FYI: just so you know, the camera told me about how much light was available by each signal. My shutter clicked like it was a datytime shot with the upgraded signal, but it stayed open for a bit with the old ones, a noticeable difference. That tells me the new signal locations puts out more light):

Now do the exact same thing to the other side:

I decided to leave the red cover on because I did not like having it all clear. So now you should now see this:

If anyone plans on doing this mod and wants to ask some questions, feel free to ask. I know I am not the only person who has done this, so if I don't answer, someone else can. :D

where'd you get the kit from? I'm aware of 2 suppliers of this type of kit. I like the clear with amber bulb. Look nice. I just cut up my rear fender, and am thinking of doing this mod before the asian cycle flush mount front signals if at all. I think this mod is far more worth it than the flush mount fronts which look to be around $40 shipped =(.

I found the lenses and the sockets for 19.90 +shippping. But need to check if they sell the amber bulbs as well, or if I need to just go to the auto parts store for some 1156's.

Ok, so you motivated me. After seeing yours and a few others on the "net" the last few days, I ordered me up a set from this place. They sell them in smoked lens color:

I'll take pics when I get it done in a few days.

great write up.

quick tip on the clear turn signals. If you want them to be more "silvery" and not show the amber bulbs through the clears, spray the bulbs with a coat of high temp silver paint from the autoparts store. The bulb will appear silver when not lit and when lit, the amber color will show through the silver paint. Old car trick we used to do with clear corners in the old days. ;)

Nice DIY! I loved this mod when I put it on my bike! It, coupled with a fender elim, makes the bike look amazing in the back! Somehow, that giant black box that passes for a fender makes it look like a cruiser to me! Good choice on the integration. Very nice job! :D

Thanks for the write up!

Id like to get the amber set.. mine are already in the rear pods but red...

I would rather deal with asiancycle.com though,..... got my front flushmounts from them and they were perfect.

I got mine from D2moto, very quick and hassle free transaction. I ordered my fender eliminator kit at the same time from another company, and it has not even got here yet. So D2 had VERY quick turnaround. I'd definitely do business with them again.

Yeah, my image hosting account just died this week. I'll try to rehost them on my new hosting account later on.

Consider hosting the pics right here on ninjette.org; you can put them right into galleries here and directly link to them from your posts.

Sounds good. I'll start moving some items over. The site is "supposed" to come back online very soon. Apparently it wasn't registered on time, which caused the site to go down. If all goes well, it will be up an running again later this week.

I'll go ahead and dig up the pics I used for the thread...

Where did you find the lenses that cheap? I've already moved the lights, but I would like to have amber signals to contrast with the brake light since they're so close together.
