Just saw the movie last night and I have to say I was impressed with how they tied everything in with the Trek history. Hopefully this movie will give some life to the franchise, sorry Im a nerd at heart. Anyways I highly recommend all you Trek fans go see it if you haven't already.

I'm not a trek fan, nor do I know any of the history >.<
But I bought tickets for the show tonight on my lunch break. I hear that its amazing and that even if you dont know anything about the story that you'll appreciate it all the same. I'm actually excited about it....though I'm going to expect Zachary Quinto (aka Syler) to be cutting peoples skulls open with his mind finger >_o heh

Almost all of the actors did their characters justice, Zachary played a very convincing Spock. Urban played Mccoy to a tee as well, and Eric Bana played a very good nemesis, not truly pure evil but like most trek villains he had his reasons for being corrupt.

I found the movie to be great. not sure what your friends are talking about...I thought kirk was great, they need to remember he is young in this one, as well he is slightly different in his personality due to the movies events of alternate time lines. my only complaint was for the first time ever kirk didn't end up loosing his shirt during a fight lol what gives! haha
otherwise the red shirt death was awesome lol.

If you think Star Trek is for geeks and don't know the history, is it still a good movie? I want to see it but I don't want to be stuck there not knowing a clue about what is happening.

even if you have never seen anything star trek before you will enjoy it. i took a date last night with me and she had only ever seen like 3 or 4 episodes before when she was little and she thought it was great. this is not your "i need to be a treky to enjoy this" kind of movie.

Such a good point, Mike. I have some nerd friends, but at some point there has to be enough. I've had conversations with some of the "geeks" and they can name every star/planet/race of creature in Star Wars but many of them can't analyze the film for the deeper meanings it contains. The stories truely are great.

ooooo. even better. go to the show on your bike but hook it up like a space craft. then you be rollin in style. d=('-')z
but seriously, I dont care what sort of "group" is affiliated with what sort of entertainment or anything like that. I like alot of things that i dont "look" like I would like XD
it should be entertaining either way, but I have a hard time watching a film for its entertaining value ever since I took all those english and film classes that made me analyze ever single freaking aspect of a movie.(camera angle, camera angle pose length, scene segways, comments, dialogue, blarg). Instead of enjoying it, I'm usually more of "why did the guy do that angle and with that music?" I hate it about myself at times heh

Oh and winona ryder was still hot despite the fact that they made her look old. I give this movie two pointy ears up!

Long time Trek fan here. I don't quite put on pointy ears and go to Trek conventions, but I've seen pretty much every episode of every series, read many of the books, and am pretty knowledgeable about most things Trek.
I went with a friend who is by no means a fan, but has seen the occasional episode and is vaguely familiar with the characters.

I liked some things, and was not happy with others. I have absolutely no problem with the big 'reboot' as some are calling it - personally I think it's more like a kick-starting, or even getting out a set of paddles and zapping Star Trek in the chest to get its heart beating again. The characters all felt pretty realistic and in line with the original cast to me.

Some of the plot, though... some things felt really, really contrived, like the writers were trying just a little too hard to get all the pieces on the chessboard in the right place at the right time. I've read Roger Ebert's review of 'mediocre' online, and I would agree with many of his comments. Hopefully, now that everyone is where he or she should be, the next couple of movies will concentrate less on action and opera, and more on story.

Overall I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Good, but definitely not great.

Now, my friend that I went with... she loved it. I was shocked. I really had to drag her to this movie, and when the credit rolled she turned to me and said, "That was awesome! That was the best Star Trek I've ever seen!"

So, I guess JJ Abrams did what he set out to do, and made a movie that both hard-core Trek fans and the general public can enjoy....

I have to disagree with you on that one. I didn't like the look of the engineering bay. The instant I saw it I thought "Did they just go into a beer distillary or something? wtf?". To me it looked like 1950's diesel powered naval ship technology rather then futuristic energy based engineering. Also they completely changed the warp core from being just that, a core to being chambers. Can't exactly say eject the warp core and then eject 6 different chambers, a little off if you ask me.

Other then that I absolutely loved the movie. It gives them a whole new world of possibilities to work with. Even though you didn't need to be a Trekky to enjoy the movie, being one helped you enjoy some of the lines and personality traits we've grown to love over the years from the original crew. :D

Who else thought that Kirk's bike was awesome?

I did :)

Looks MUCH better in person. Although I noticed they keyed out (green screen) the wheels to make it look like floating tires in the movie. The three vehicles: the police unit, Kirk's bike and his car was on display at the Paramount Pictures private screening of Star Trek. I saw the movie this afternoon. Highly recommended!!

Some quick shots from my iPhone :) Looks like a heavily outfitted Buell XB9/XB12 to me...actually, I'm sure of it haha.

Not to get all nerdy but I'm pretty sure Kirk's bike was running on tires in the movie. The cop's bike was the one hovering. I found that strange since he encountered the cop as a kid and then he grows up and is riding a regular motorcycle. "You might be a motorcyclist" if you notice every bike discrepancy in movies you watch....

Obviously the cop was hovering :) In regards to his bike, I believe when he pulled up to the Starfleet recruiting station at the Enterprise build site the wheels/rims, not the tires, were removed. It was more or less a spinning/floating tire :)

Edit: Found a picture of what I'm talking about. I knew wasn't seeing things ;)

TOTALLY! I wanted that hover bike too.

Yeah, that's really sad. I am a HUGE Star Trek fan. I wouldn't dress up to go see the movie. I've worn Trekkie sorta stuff to conventions before, but going to the movie in Vulcan ears or uniform is just goofy.

NOW... I want an honest answer to a question I have to those who saw the movie and are Trek fans (cuz I don't expect the non-fans to even know what I am talking about) --

In the scene where the old Spock and Kirk are on that planet and they are talking to Scotty about the transporter... did you catch the line about the Beagle??

The line was "Admiral Archer's Beagle". LOL!! I miss Enterprise. :(

You of course realize that DLing a movie that is still in the theaters is considered piracy and therefore illegal. So I KNOW you're not suggesting doing anything illegal, that would be wrong. :p

Just be careful cause internet providers and the government are cracking down on this practice. I'd hate to see you guys get a hefty fine and such.

Wow - that's not even a close comparison.

If I own a copy of a book, CD, or movie, I have every right to let you borrow that one copy to view privately - but you are NOT allowed to duplicate it in any way for distribution.

In your comparison, if you lend a torque wrench to someone to use, they can certainly use it - they just can't somehow magically make a duplicate.

You're comparing BORROWING AND RETURNING, to STEALING AND COPYING, not even in the same ballpark. You're downloading movies that have been illegally copied from the theater. It's not legal to copy a movie in any form because you didn't pay for it, and you're downloading movies that JUST got into the theater. That means there's not even a dvd or legal digital copy of the movie on the market. Therefore it was stolen and uploaded for free distribution online which is 'pirating'. Debate all you want, illegal is illegal. Do it if you want, just don't brag about it cause it could come back to bite you.

I might have to go watch it again to find that remark about Admiral Archer and see if I can find more details I missed the first time. I like the way they made it seem like they were breaking the sound barrier when going to warp, it was actually really cool.

Haaa, who said anything about copying distributing? Are you ok with watching a dvd, of an in-theater movie, that is an media copy? As in, a copy distributed by the production company to focus groups and media outlets for review? I don't understand anyone who would spend the time to watch a crappy "cam" movie. The movies that I watch are DVD quality. BTW which is not illegal.

Actually yes it is. Since the movie has only been sent out to theaters any copies of the movie ONLINE are illegally copied and distributed freely. This is PIRATING, hence illegal. I'll just leave it at that, if you want to do it, do it. Just don't brag about it or try to get others involved in it either. This is all I'm going to say on this.

Once again. Movies are distributed to focus groups and media outlets before their release. Not just move theaters.

The wifey and I went to the movies today and finally saw this. We both liked it quite a bit! Neither of us are hard-core trekkies, but knew enough to chuckle at the more obvious comical references (redshirt buying it, kirk nailing yet another green alien). Good to see pics of the bike in this thread, I had forgotten about them and was trying to place the shape of it.
