ELECTRIC motorcycles will come with up to £1,500 off the purchase price under a new government initiative.

Up to £7.5million has been set aside to offer grants of up to £1,500 to buyers of electric bikes.

The move follows discussions between the government and motorcycle manufacturers including Volt, Suzuki, Mahindra, Harley-Davidson and BMW.

Harley-Davidson last year revealed an electric model called the LiveWire (http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-news-new-bikes/revealed-harley-davidsons-electric-livewire/25167.html) while BMW produces the C evolution (http://www.visordown.com/road-tests-first-rides/bmw-c-evolution-electric-scooter-review/21280.html) scooter.

Indian firm Mahindra makes an electric scooter called the GenZe, which it plans to bring to the UK late this year.

Ireland-based Volt Motorcycles recently unveiled a range of new electric machines (http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-news-new-bikes/new-range-of-irish-built-electric-bikes/26342.html) including a sports bike called the 220, signifying its maximum range of 220km (136 miles).

KTM also recently launched an electric model, the Freeride E (http://www.visordown.com/learners/first-ride-ktm-freeride-e-review/25562.html).

Business Minister Matthew Hancock said: ‘Low emission vehicles are the future and show that we can meet our climate change commitments without giving up our cars or motorbikes. Electric motorcycles and scooters have got fantastic potential and can be a real force for good.

‘This investment shows we are serious about increasing the uptake of cleaner vehicles in the UK, and offer a fantastic place for firms to locate their research and development and manufacturing facilities. Supporting new technologies is a key part of our long-term economic plan.'

Transport Minister Baroness Kramer said: ‘This £7.5 million for electric bikes demonstrates our commitment to all ultra-low emission vehicles, from motorbikes to cars and trucks. From navigating city streets to putting in the motorway miles there is now a genuine low emission choice for everyone and electric vehicles are now ready to go mainstream. We are determined that the UK continues to be at the forefront of this vital revolution in transport.’

Phil Horton, General Manager for BMW Motorrad UK, said: ‘This is hugely important step forward in the government’s policy for electric vehicles. BMW Group is at the forefront of electric vehicle development with the i3 and i8 cars – and the C evolution is the first two wheeled electric vehicle to bear the Motorrad brand. With the grant from the Government factored in, the C evolution becomes an even more appealing option for urban commuters and riders.’

A spokesman for Mahindra said: ‘Mahindra welcomes this statement of ambition and commitment by the UK government - further enhancing what is already one of the most comprehensive packages of support for the move to e-mobility anywhere in the world. The Mahindra GenZe is an innovative, zero emission electric 2 wheeler, that will offer an exciting ride to urban commuters.

‘The Mahindra Group already has a growing presence in the UK through its electric vehicles and Formula E racing team and we fully expect the UK to be one of our lead markets for our GenZe 2 wheelers when they come to the UK market in late 2015.’
