GUY Martin has been confirmed as the new anchor of Top Gear.
The North Lincolnshire road racer will replace Jeremy Clarkson as host of the BBC flagship show when filming of the new series begins in 2016.
BBC TV Director Cohen Danny said Martin had been chosen for his ‘affable charisma’.
Martin said: ‘My only demand was that they beat the £12.50 an hour I can make as lorry mechanic plus double time on Saturday mornings.’
Martin had earlier said ‘never say never’ in response to bookies offering odds of 6/1 on him joining the show.
Martin told Uslter TV: ‘I don’t want to try and be the man who replaced Jeremy Clarkson, but never say never.’
He also joked that he ‘couldn’t get time off work’.
Martin, 33, is set to race a BMW S1000RR at this year’s TT, North West 200 and Ulster Grand Prix, but had already indicated his intention to scale down his racing commitments in 2016.
He has carved a successful career as a TV presenter, appearing in a number of shows including the Channel 4 series Speed with Guy Martin, in which he attempts to break unusual speed records.
Until this morning’s announcement, bookies were offering odds of 6/1 on Martin becoming the next Top Gear presenter, after Clarkson’s sacking for allegedly punching a producer in a row over catering arrangements.
Martin was behind presenter Dermot O’Leary and DJ Chris Evans, both at 3/1, and former supermodel Jodie Kidd, who was favourite at 6/4.
