GEOFF Duke, one of the brightest ever stars of motorcycle racing, has died aged 92.

The six-time world champion died at a nursing home in Douglas on the Isle of Man on Friday.

Duke dominated the Isle of Man TT in the 1950s, achieving six wins in six years.

The St Helens-born racer won three world titles for Norton before switching to Gilera in 1953 and winning three successive 500cc world championships for the Italian marque.

He was named Sportsman of the Year in 1951 after setting Junior and Senior TT lap and race records.

In the 1955 Senior he set a new outright lap record of 99.97mph, which was initially declared the first 100mph lap before being corrected.

He was awarded an OBE in 1953.

MotoGP’s Cal Crutchlow tweeted: ‘Really sad to hear the passing of Geoff Duke. A true hero in our sport.’
