This bare wheel rim has appeared in a patent in India attributed to TVS
THIS wheel rim could be the proof BMW is developing a single-cylinder 300cc bike with Indian firm TVS.
A patent for this bare rim just appeared in India attributed to TVS and its spokes are identical to those that appeared in spy pictures (http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-news-new-bikes/spy-shots-small-capacity-naked-bmw-spied-testing/26200.html) of a BMW-developed single-cylinder 300cc machine.
So what? Well, the fact that elements of the bike’s visual design are being patented suggests that its launch is imminent.
Most manufacturers prefer to time their design patents so images of individual components or the complete design only appear after the official unveiling to make sure they don’t give too much away in advance but the cat is out of the bag on this one.
The bike is a joint-venture and is likely to be badged as both a BMW and TVS for different markets. Expect the roadster (snapped in the spy shots) to be joined by a faired sports bike and a GS-inspired adventure bike in the future.
So far the technical details of the bike have remained well hidden but we know it’s codenamed K3, and uses a 300cc single-cylinder engine.
It appears the bike’s motor is an unusual reverse-cylinder design, with the intake at the front and the exhaust at the back of the cylinder, which itself is tilted backwards in the frame rather than having the usual forwards slant. It’s an idea that’s gaining traction, though – Yamaha’s YZ450F motocrosser and Honda’s NSF250R Moto3 bike both use reverse-cylinder singles, so perhaps BMW isn’t crazy to adopt the layout.
