Last month, we reported recalls for the 2015 Yamaha (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/yamaha.html) YZF-R1M in Canada and Australia as part of a larger recall for Ohlins rear shocks (http://blog.motorcycle.com/2015/04/02/products/ohlins-recalls-aftermarket-ttx36-shocks/). As we expected, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has followed suit in announcing a similar recall for the U.S. market.

The recall concerns the piston rod nut on Ohlins TTX36 rear shocks. On certain shocks, the nuts may not have tightened enough and may loosen, resulting in a loss of rear suspension damping and possibly the full disassembling of the shock.

Yamaha dealers will inspect R1Ms and check the six-digit lot number stamped near the top of the shock. If the lot number identifies the shock as being from the faulty lots, dealers will replace it with a new TTX36 shock.

The R1M isn’t the only motorcycle affected by the Ohlins recall. The Honda (http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/honda.html) CBR1000RR SP has also been recalled in Australia and Japan (http://blog.motorcycle.com/2015/04/22/manufacturers/honda/honda-cbr1000rr-sp-affected-ohlins-ttx36-recall/) to correct the same issue. We expect NHTSA to announce a recall for the CBR1000RR SP shortly.
