View Full Version : Looking at mesh jackets.. getting hot out

Of course I would rather be sweating when I get home than feel cool and comfortable in the back of the ambulance..

I ran errands this morning.. took the Ninja.. its about 70 here but humid.. I'm wearing my helmet, gloves and my Teknic Chicane textile jacket.. I removed the inner liner vest thing.. now I know I am safer than the fuy that drove by me on a cruiser wearing just a tshirt.. but man it is hot. I think it is time to invest in a mesh jacket.. My chicane is awesome... ver comfortable although when I wear a t shirt it is a bit looser than when Im wearing a nice button down and undershirt to work, or a seater or sweatshirt.. and its a 44.. (they were out of 42 and this was a clearance). So I am thinking of getting a 42 for the warm weather mesh.

newenough has this one on clearance (thats where I bought the chicane) for $85

http://www.newenough.com/protective_apparel/mesh_jackets_and_pants/first_gear/firstgear_mesh_tex_motorcycle_jacket.html

I'd either get black:
http://www.newenough.com/image/path/18211/FG_Mesh_front.jpg

or silver:
http://www.newenough.com/image/path/18359/Mesh_Tex_silver_black.jpg

Those are the colors of my helmet anyway..

It seems comparable to my Chicane with armor on elbows and shoulders... and a back pad..

what do you think? Should i consider something else? I want it to be comfortable and breathable.. its not getting any colder out there for a while..

Thanks,
Adam

I love new enoughs clearance. I got my Joe Rocket Mesh Jacket for $29 from them, which I consider one hell of a steal since I've seen the exact jacket for 120 in stores around here.
Definitely not the best jacket around, but great for its price.

Even on the hottest of days, my mesh jacket keeps me cool as long as I'm moving. Stopping at stoplights gets toasty pretty quick though.

Wow.. $29??? That's insane.. I paid $49 for my chicane on clearance.... same thing.. worth a lot more and perfect.

I wish they would put some mesh jackets on 'crazy' clearance.. lol

Adam,
I would stay away from those, as the nylon is really low quality. It is only a 250 denier, and at the minimum, you want 600 denier. The 250 won't offer any abrasion resistance. In this case the 600 or 250 debate is clearly in favor of the 600 :) The nylon that one is made of is likely to disintegrate on contact with asphalt.
Here are some other great choices for you

It is pricier than the ones Kim suggested. I have also heard that the Scorpion mesh jacket is rather nice

It's a bit more than i had wanted to spend, but it looks to be what I am looking for, and it sucks to be sweatin in the textile.

Some of the ones that you linked were actually textile.. one being the Chicane that I have.. which Im glad that it is rated well.

I have the Yoshimura AF-C jacket, its pretty nice.

After I lowsided it held up pretty well, tore a bit over the shoulder pad but still going strong. I'll edit this post with pics later. I'll probably buy it again since its $100 less than I originally paid.

I just wish it was a little longer, that sport fit brings it right to my belt buckle.

edit: as far as keeping you cool and whatnot, this works great. I'm not boiling at a stoplight, and I'm nice and cool throughout the ride.
And I'm the kinda person who breaks a sweat eating hot pizza. :p

I bought a Frank Thomas mesh jacket from Cycle Gear after roasting in the leather jacket i intended to wear. Wasnt $85, but $120 for a jacket i got to buy and wear the same day aint bad.

Its awesome. Its like wearing nothing, and is passable as a regular jacket off the bike. As for protection, I actually think it may be better for impacts than the leather one i have. The armor in the shoulders and the elbows extends almost the full length of the sleaves, and the back pad is fairly substaintial as well. Figure as long as i dont slide on my chest, ill be fine.

I am a pretty "frugal" person and I will honestly just sweat my tail off rather than spend $100 on something I don't need.

I stripped the two inserts from my normal jacket, The Scorpion Hat-Trick.

When sitting still, sure I get hot as hell, but when moving I'm ok.

I'm down here in the DEEP south also, where humidity is through the roof and temps lately have been 95º+ with some being over 100º.

Just my own opinion here but I can take the heat.

For all you gear heads that like to ridicule wife beating, thong wearing, flip flop groovers. I bought a new jacket. Well I bought it for the boys. It's a Joe Rocket Suzuki mesh jacket. Unfortunately, neither of them like it so I'm going to wear it. They like the Dainese leather jackets better (Marco Lucchinelli replica). So I get the new jacket.

Now everybody better shut the "f" up about me and gear. I'm still wearing flip flops though.

I like my Hat-Trick, but when its 95º+ it feels like its not getting any air through it, I have to unzip mine about halfway down and hold it open going down the road to get any air flow. Have you had the chance to wear that jacket in the cold yet? If so, do the liners do a good job keeping you warm?

Have you considered a perforated leather jacket to replace your textile?

For example I have both Joe Rocket Speedmaster 5.0 perforated leather jacket:

http://www.newenough.com/image/path/8834/black.jpg

and the UFO 2 mesh jacket for hot weather.

http://www.newenough.com/image/path/24262/2009_Joe_Rocket_UFO_2.0_Jacket_Grey_Black_White.jpg

You'd expect the white mesh/textile jacket to be much cooler based on just the color itself, but I find that my all black perforated leather jacket keeps me cooler! With nearly full frontal perforation and perforation on the top of the arms, shoulders, and upper back to allow heat to escape, I don't bother taking out my mesh jacket anymore.

I'm thinking about getting an all-white leather jacket.

http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/images/InitialSet/taichi_gmx_motion_lthr_jkt_white_400.jpg
Or Icon Accelerant leather perforated jacket
https://www.cyclegear.com/images/jackets/icon_accelerant_perf_lthr_jkt_wht_LG.jpg

A lot of surface area to reflect light and perforations everywhere!

^^ I have that exact UFO mesh jacket and sometimes I use just the top of my 2-piece. It's mostly perforated (only the outside of the arms is not). The mesh jacket is TONS cooler. While moving its not that far off but come to a stoplight or traffic and i am roasting in the leather. Well I am roasting in either but markedly more so in the leather.

I don't know how you Americans in the lower states can ride in your temperatures without a mesh jacket. I guess being in Canada makes me more used to cold weather than hot. :canada:

I currently have a Teknic mesh jacket (don't know the model or denier rating, it's from 2002). Couple of years ago I had a low speed (less than 50 km/h) wipeout with it on. Landed on my arms and knees. Just some minor scuffing on my sleeve and the pads must have worked because I didn't feel a thing on my elbow or forearm.

I'm looking to get a new mesh jacket for myself so that I can use my old one for passengers. Has anybody had any experience with the Joe Rocket Kawasaki mesh jacket? I'm looking at the grey but I sure wish it came in blue to match the bike.

this is my hot weather jacket. it flows a lot of air and it is really comfortable here in hawaii... it is lightweight, but still seems to offer decent protection.

i also like that it has mid-arm, wrist, and waist adjustments.

it isn't good if you get caught out in the rain with it though. the water will start to get through relatively fast.

While I'm normally wearing my vented Fieldsheer Highland II one-piece suit, I bought the Cortech HRX silver mesh jacket a while back, however it's been discontinued now. Looks good and flows quite a bit of air, has CE armor, plus leather in the impact areas. The only problem is that I didn't buy a pair of mesh pants back then to go with it!

Mines Red/Black
I like it alot, it doesnt get too warm sitting at a Light... compared to my Scorpion exo Deuce Riding pants (Mesh/Textile) lol
the price i paided is $229.95 for mine from sportbiketrackgear.com (i live near their store here in Mi.)
It fits great, with my gloves on, pretty eash to upzip pockets to grab Cell phone out,etc.. stuck at a light (check time,if i got any voicemails)

The Airguard liner, works really well on blocking Rain and Wind!
i rode in a nasty downpour for 45mins Heavy Rains as i rode 35-45MPH in the city of Mt. clemens Mi. When i got to my bros house, took off my gear, my shirt was nice and dry, lil damp around the collar... some water (any coat i presume will be that way) was able to pass around my neck, but im sure theres Neck Guard scarfs or sumin from 'Cold Killers' inc. to take care of that!
I rode in the morning to work with the airguard liner, in 39-46 degrees and i didnt feel ANY CHILL on my torso... except my Neck got alil chilled, you need to wear a scarf thingy if your riding in Fall/Winter weather. Other then those few things, im very Happy with my Scorpion Gear! Next year i plan on buying the ULTRA COOL LOOKING - Scorpion 'Stinger' leather jacket in White (looks like a star wars Storm-trooper) for my Summer jacket! but its $380.95 ouchy

I recently got the jacket in your very first question, the firstgear meshtex, and I love it. I wear it without the liner and last week was a very hot week, never felt too hot once. It's my first jacket so I can't really compare it with anything, but I'm definetly pleased with it so far.

My new jacket just came in the mail today,http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/300/2008_Yoshimura_AF_Mesh_Jacket.jpg
Ive been wearing the jacket around the house for a couple of hours, I would go for a ride, but it is raining. Here is what I have noted, the quality seems very good, it feels like it will hold up well in a crash, the only thing I really have a problem with is the plastic zipper, but it is a YKK zipper and feels high quality. The armor is also a bit bulky compared to my scorpion jacket, but its pretty form fitting.

Also I carry just about everything in the pockets of my scorpion jacket it was 4 huge pockets, the yoshi jacket just has 2 small pockets in the front, looks like I will have to make sacrifices as to what I will carry on my person.

Anybody who is looking for a new jacket atm should checkout the Yoshimura section at Motorcyclesuperstore.com Lots of great jackets for real cheap.
