I took a last minute run through ACH yesterday. Started off at Jay's Shell at noon and topped off my tank. The road was clear with very few rocks/debris. Weather was perfect. Had fish and chips at Newcomb's Ranch and relaxed for for about 30 minutes watching Tour de France on TV.

After the food settled I headed back on the road, heading out to Wrightwood mini mart. Unlike the last time I went the weather was quite nice. It was warm but when up to speed it felt cool.

Below is the route from Newcomb's to Wrightwood:

During the ride I came across a couple of slow cruisers, both riding 2 up. Other than cruisers and a Chevy Tahoe, I had the road in my direction all to myself. The repaved road just looked like uninterrupted black and yellow ribbon. The ride was so enjoyable I only stopped a few times to take pics. The whole ride was picturesque.

From Jays Shell to Wrightwood Mini mart I only used 1.37 gallons. 60.5 miles > 44.16 mpg!

Instead of heading back on Hwy 2, I decided to head visit my friend in Fontana. Here's the route:

Heading south on Interstate 15 was very unpleasant. The canyon winds were wicked and I've never felt anything like this before. I've delt with strong winds before but the sensation is hard to explain. It felt like I was sliding sideways while still being upright, like on ice. Next time I take ACH to Wrightwood I'm going to avoid I-15 and just head back on the 2. After having iced tea and chilling I took rode back home, which took 45 minutes. Arrived home at 5:30pm. I was tired and I passed out.

Can't wait to do this again!

Looks like a fun road! How many miles was it?

The first time I read Big Pines, I accidentally switched the 'i' and 'e' :D

Hey Nick,

The total round trip from my house was a little over 142 miles.

Very jealous. Was out to Wrightwood a few years ago before they closed that section, and need to find some time to get back there with the new pavement...

That's a great road- I did part of it in 1988 on a friends Honda FT500. It can be plagued with squids on the weekend though.

A nice side trip near there is Mt. Wilson, if you are interested in the astronomical observatories. The 100 inch reflector is still there, and I think they do tours.
