SHANE ‘Shakey’ Byrne has returned to his winning ways in the opening British Superbike Championship race at Oulton Park, claiming his 67th career win.
It was Byrne who took the advantage on the opening lap with a pack of riders queued up behind him led by Tommy Bridewell who were eager to grab the lead including James Ellison, who’s returning from injury, and Danny Buchan.
Bridwell pushed for the lead, but on the seventh lap, the Tyco BMW rider was sidelined by a technical issue which forced him to retire whilst attempting to overhaul Byrne. Despite a non-finish, the Tyco BMW rider still holds onto fourth position in the overall standings, but takes no Showdown points into the deciding two races on Sunday.
Ellison and Buchan were left to dice it out for second, but the returning Ellison held him off despite Buchan’s best efforts on-board the Be Wiser Kawasaki. Ellison has now confirmed his place in the Showdown six whilst Buchan celebrated taking his debut British Superbike podium in third place.
Brookes, who is already confirmed in the Showdown, started 30th on the grid after a problem with the Milwaukee Yamaha in Qualifying. The Australian dashed through the field to score a fourth place finish with the podium contenders in sight.
Dan Linfoot claimed fifth position behind Brookes after a race-long battle with Luke Mossey as they scrap it out for a Showdown place. The Honda Racing rider just had the edge on the final lap ahead of the Buildbase BMW rookie. Richard Cooper and Lee Jackson took seventh and eighth respectively.
Tyco BMW’s Michael Laverty took ninth whilst Peter Hickman, who has just returned from the Classic TT, took tenth which leaves three Showdown places up for grabs.
