AUSTRALIAN Josh Brookes returns to the top step of the podium in race two at Oulton Park as rival Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne retires due to a technical fault.
Initially it was Byrne who led the race from pole position, but Brookes was ready to attack on-board the Milwaukee Yamaha where he led from the second lap. The pair swapped places numerous times as the defending Champion made a move at Old Hall only for the Australian to push back to take the lead at Shell.
Whilst Byrne and Brookes were in the midst of battling it out for the lead, Tyco BMW’s Tommy Bridewell was behind in close contention as he began to make a move, but instead suffered a huge high-side at Cascades on the fifth lap – Bridewell’s second DNF of the weekend.
Brooks and Byrne continued to battle it out at the front whilst Dan Linfoot, Danny Buchan, Luke Mossey and James Ellison were scraping for the final podium position. It was Buchan who moved ahead and edged the gap to hold third.
On the penultimate lap of the race, Buchan found himself promoted to second place as Byrne was forced to park the Kawasaki ZX-10R due to a technical fault ending his hopes of a second win of the weekend.
The battle for third place intensified with Linfoot and Mossey swapping places multiple times before the Honda Racing rider took the advantage on the final lap moving himself closer to a Showdown position at the expense of Stuart Easton who has withdrawn from the races due to injury.
Ellison held onto fifth place for the JG Speedfit Kawasaki team ahead of Peter Hickman and Michael Laverty, who has now confirmed his position in the Showdown, followed by Richard Cooper and Christian Iddon. James Westmoreland rounded out the top ten.
Five Showdown positions have now been taken, but a sixth place still remains unconfirmed and will therefore be decided in the third and final race at Oulton Park today. Easton currently resides in the sixth place, but Linfoot is only seven points adrift.
