First you need to make sure that the surface you are going to paint is free from any loose paint or old finishes by sanding and or scraping off any loose material that you can see. Then you'll need to get a good paint primer from any paint or hardware store,we carry a good primer from Zinsser product lines where I work. Then depending how big this cabinet is you can use either a high gloss spray paint or rent an airless sprayer. These will prevent you from seeing brush lines if you apply the paint from a can.

This weekend while watching one of the home improvement shows, the host said that if you want a nice, smooth finish when painting furniture to use a foam roller to avoid seeing brush/roller strokes.
