View Full Version : My ninjer w/busa forks

Picked up a salvage ninja with front end damage. Got some cheap busa forks.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b249/blonger/IMG_3954.jpg

Tire hits the fairing and handlebars hit. I could get riser bars and hack the lower part of the fairing off, but I think I'll just go naked.

Thats allot of front end for a 250 to push :D

Good thing you got the light weight calipers!

talk about a front end upgrade! not too shabby Brian, I would really like to see the end product, it looks sick. Quick question, is the busa front tire wider than the stock 250 rear tire?

blong
August 6th, 2009, 07:24 AM
pretty much all sportbikes (like busa) have 3.5" wide front wheels. tires size is 120.

Broom
August 6th, 2009, 07:48 AM
i can't imagine that having a positive affect on handling, but a cool project anyways.

gotta get rid of the horrid fender though. the busa has to be one of the ugliest bikes out.

Cedilla

I agree, I think the busa's biggest quality is the sheer absurdity of that much power.

Bought an 06/07 gsxr 600 rear shock. According to internet,
The 07 gsxr 600 shock is 317mm with a spring rate of 9.4kg/mm = 525#/in
Anybody know what the stock ninja spring rate is?
I measure:
stock: 320mm long
gsxr600: 317mm long

Install procedure:
- drill out shock on top and bottom. i used a 15/32" drill
- lower fork on the rear shock is narrower, so:
- make some clearance on lower swing-link thing. i used a harbor-freight milling machine. only need to file down a few mm
- same story on the steel pivot cylinder.
- bolt it up. dogbones hit the shock, so you'll need two longer bolts and a handful of spacers

because the shock is shorter, i'm going to make some shorter dogbones. stock dogbones measure about 165mm.

jumped up and down on it...spring rate feels about the same, but having some compression damping sure does feel nice...

So are you just setting this up for racing or are you going to get it streetlegal?

You thinking rear end swap too? Swingarm and wheel?

Curious about doing that myself but would prefer to go the easiest, cheapest route.

Thanks

Heh, well for the cheap and easy way need lots of measurements. Anyone know the width of:

The pivot point of the swing arm?
The OD of the pivot bolt?
The OD of the pivot sleeve?

I know the rear axle is 17mm , unfortunately only the bandit400 is 17mm rear axle and 17" rim. The FZR is 18" x 4" so it's a good candidate though I'd prefer to keep it 17" front and back. Basically it looks like a full swingarm swap would be the easiest/cheapest solution. Though it will take lots of research to find the optimum swingarm to swap on.

Bob

Thx

Actually it looks like the Katana 750, 1st gen, came stock with a 150 tire on a 17" rim. And it looks like it had a 17mm rear axle. So that is probably the most promising. Now if I can find a good deal on one on ebay with all the fixings. So I don't get nickel and dimed to death for all the odds and ends.

Heh, apparently I didn't properly convey how cheap I am. I paid $400 for my last bike (91 ex500) and $2k for my 09 250r with crash damage. So i'd prefer to stay under $200 for a rear swap including the tire :D

I'd probably be doing the work over the winter so I have time to be patient and wait for the right deal, or just use the FZR600 suspension I have in the basement.

Thanks though.

Stock ninja spring rate is 9.3 kg/mm according to racetech. They also spec out that the optimal spring rate for a 150 lb rider for racing is 8.4 kg/mm using their calculator thing. Maybe thats spec'd for their special damper valving.

Here are some OEM rear spring rates for reference (taken from racetech):
- 2009-up Ninja EX250: 9.3 kg/mm
- 2003-2004 GSXR 1000: 8.6 kg/mm
- 2005-2006 GSXR 1000: 8.1 kg/mm
- 2001-2003 GSXR 600: 8.0 kg/mm
- 2004-2005 GSXR 600: 7.2 kg/mm
- 2006-2009 GSXR 600: 9.4 kg/mm
- 2006-2007 ZX10R: 8.3 kg/mm
- 2008-2010 ZX10R: 9.1 kg/mm
- 2007-2010 ZX6R: 9.2 kg/mm

I didn't post others, because they were all much stiffer than these ones posted, and wasnt sure how well they would fit, especially with the external reservoir shape of some of them.
